Title: Suggestion: Extended Rank System
Post by: Anonymous on March 03, 2011, 04:13:13 PM
Since this forum is becoming increasingly active, I think it would be cool if we had ranks that extended past Hero Member. It would 1) give people more incentive to post and 2) give a sense of seniority among people who will continue to post in the future.

If this goes through, what should we call the ranks? Well, who better to decide than the community itself?

I will create the increments for when rank ups should occur and you can give them names. Post your suggestions below and nominate the ones you like. The most popular will get added to the list below.

1000 -

1500 -

2250 -

3375 -

5062 -

7593 -

11,389 -

17,083 -

23,001 -

25,624 -

30,000 -

Quality, not quantity, is what should be encouraged. I love the way that vBulletin has a "Thanks" button beside each post, and you can see which posters contributed the most useful material to the site.

Ranks should be replaced with "Donated by others" counter.
This counter should show - how many bitcoins other users sent to this user as gratitude for his efforts.

The user will not be able to boost his rank himself
unless he have two accouns in the forum
(which can be displayed to everyone if donations will be public).

Hm, can any individual make a Bitcoin add-on for SMF? Is it open enough?

Also this shows again how badly we need micro-transactions i.e. something way less than 0.01 BTC. In fact, this would be great for any forum system, even not related to bitcoin.

Great idea. Donations are a more meaningful metric of authority than quantity of posts. The challenge is to get people donating more, by (a) making it easy, (b) allowing subdivision payments.

Perhaps subdivision payments are best handled outside of the bitcoin network by a third-party, like mybitcoin or a dedicated micro-tipping service.

This could be combined with a click-able widget which automatically donated a default amount in the context of the original page.

Seems like an obvious use for bitcoin.

How about something also showing how many donations that person has made? Would encourage/pressure people into tipping others too ;D

Now imagine that phpbb vbulletin and the ilk got plugins for donation based ranks. What better promotional tool for bitcoin can anyone want?

Imagine using the pro version of  http://witcoin.com  (http://witcoin.com)(ie.., your own category, with a custom domain .. e.g., forum.bitcoin.org ) instead of vbulletin / smf /etc.  Would that be close enough?
