Title: Bitmain to release FPGA miners soon
Post by: Etherion on May 21, 2018, 07:31:28 PM
ASIC is fixed and can't be changed but what will happen once Bitmain starts to release FPGA miners with updated code everytime the coin fork?

Oh dear.
I should've known better.

There is no way around it. Bitmain is just owning us little miners whatever we do. These talks of fpga's were getting my attention again... Shame on me for thinking we'd get an advantage over the big asic producers... :(

yea so much of Monero forks ever 6 month. Just get update from bitmain and on they go.

THE END CPU/GPU FARMS

Soon only machines by Bitmain will mine and they will dominate crypto market, no GPUs, no decentralization, no people mining

Only BigFarms, Bitmain and his friends

Disgusting how people can support cryptos and buy anything from bitmain

Considering how much news and hype there's been surrounding FPGAs recently, I'm not really surprised Bitmain is jumping on this trend and is trying to capitalize on it. They're going to have closer ties to FPGA manufacturers like Xilinx than any of us will have, too... we'll see what happens here with time.

On another note, looking at the video description, this video was released by Xilinx's YouTube channel this January, and Bitmain have only mostly. been using FPGAs in their Antminer controllers up to now. A bit old, but with FPGAs starting to become more relevant again, it is indeed likely there could be more developments in the way of FPGAs from Bitmain soon.

Selling FPGA mining would have to be a last resort for bitmain. They make more money selling asics because they cant be re-programmed. Imagine if bitmain release an FPGA in mass quantities and its cracked by programmers , allowing them to turn the miner into almost any algo, limited to the specs of course. That would be horrendous to bitmains bottom line. Its like a x10 on steroids. I think theyd just use them themselves and keep using FPGAs only in controllers. Theyd make more money just releasing a new x3 every 6 months.

how will it be bad for them of someone else release bitstreams for there hardware? They will then just sell more hardware and don't have to spend dev time on updating their bitstreams. I would think it would be in there interest to release hardware with well-documented guides on how to programme them with custom code. then they can just make the hardware and the hard work will be done for free. I'm not saying they will release documents but it sounds like a win win to me.

If these comes to fruition, will it end gpu miners? Sell all our coins now because supply will be diluted? What do you guys think? Max they can create fpga is probably 4-6 months?

Where are all of these Pro-FPGA but Anti-ASIC supporters now. I knew that FPGA will share the same fate as ASICs.

As Bitmain is slowly competiting with NVidia on all fronts now NVidia should also enter Bitmain's field- mining. Their expertise lies is GPUs so they should now make mining only gpu (not the fake ones like p106 but real ones made from ground up).

Well, the new Nvda generation seem to be able to run 20 % faster with 30% less power.
So, on that front the gap is closing.
Not so sure that Fpga tecnology can grow as fast as GPU technology

Wow, Bitmain again?  So much for decentralization; I guess playing dirty has paid off for them again in the manifestation of soon to be released FPGAs.

stop supporting him by not buying his stuff, simple. One day, you will grow up.

This won't happen because it's bad for business if they sell something actually usable for mining instead overpriced paper weight/room heater

This is the reason, i like POS. POS does not need mining and no cost of equipments. ??? ???
