I recommend against it.  Having the bitcoind client locally will always be faster, more robust, and more flexible. 
We used the blockchain API for early proof of concept testing, but pretty quickly moved to the actual client.  This is *especially* true if you're using walletnotify or blocknotify.

Well that is why I want to talk to some people I have some ideas ;) but I want to get a market price point and some key features first before launching.
