Title: How many BTC wallets/addresses do you have?
Post by: the_poet on January 16, 2014, 03:38:07 PM
Preamble: as a starter, am I correct in assuming that bitcoin wallets and addresses are synonyms?

How many wallets (addresses) do you have and what are your benefits in having multiple ones?

Wallets create addresses. Therefore a wallet can have hundreds of addresses. Personally I run three wallets. One with no balance. (used for downloading the blockchain). One with a small amount for spending. And one for cold storage of my btc stash.

I don't know how many addresses I have used. Two hundred?

I only have a few.
If i sell something tho, and let ppl send it to coinbase, i rather change addresses once in a while or ppl will see how much other ppl have send on the same address.

1 wallet but re-created every 10 transactions ... i don't want all lines of useless history.
bitcoin can store this ... but i don't want that in my bitcoin-QT.

I'm currently using Blockchain.info for my wallet. Can I create more addresses that refer to the same wallet there? Other than a simple way to organize your BTCs, are there any important reasons to have several?

Yes you can make as many as you want. Just go receive and press new address.

Wallets and addresses are not the same thing. So I don't understand the 2nd question "How many wallets (addresses) do you have and what are your benefits in having multiple ones?"

OK, now my question should be ok.

It depends on the wallet. But generally, there is no limit on the addresses you can create.

Yes, I would like to know the answer to that question as well. What is the benefit of having so many addresses? And why does a new address have to be generated each time you make a payment or receive a payment?

What is the difference between tumbling through different wallets or different addresses? What helps to be hidden?

thanks

Doesn't it have a chance to generate a existing wallet therefore someone could have access to your coins?

Put it this way - if you just use one  address, and someone finds out that address is connected to you, they can see all the bitcoin transactions you ever made. Probably not what you want :)

If you use a different address for every transaction, it makes it a much harder job for anyone to track your bitcoin activities.

Wallets are a whole different topic really, the main thing is to encrypt it with a strong password, and keep the password somewhere nowhere else can find it. Ideally in your head.

I currently use Blockchain.info. Is my wallet simply the collection of my addresses there?

Well yes, in simple terms, a wallet is really just a way of allocating a bunch of addresses to an "owner". Its actually a collection of "private keys", but thinking in terms of "a collection of bitcoin addresses" is fine.

Are you saying if I went to Overstock.com and used my coinbase e wallet to purchase something, and they have my name, they can see all my bitcoin activity?

Or if I send bitcoins to my wife's wallet, she can then find out all my porn/bitcoin transactions?  :o

Greetings Forum,

For those of you who have many wallets?

1. Did you create them one at a time from one computer?

                                  or

2. Did you do as I attempted and created your wallets from two systems running at the same time using the same IP Address?

The reason for this question results from my attempt to synchronize Bitcoin-QT from Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 at the same time from my laptop and desktop. My desktop runs 24/7 and my laptop does not, which is the reason why I wanted to make only two wallets. However, on my Windows 7, Bitcoin-QT has been synchronizing 3 hours behind for 3 days. I have the green check mark on Windows 8.1.

I am in a dilemma because I do not know what to do about Bitcoin-QT synchronizing 3 hours behind for the past three days. Now, I only want one wallet and delete the other permanently but I am not sure what affect that will have on my chances of playing this mining game.
