Title: Sapphire R9 280X VAPOR-X throttle
Post by: NiPo69 on January 16, 2014, 08:49:57 PM
Hello ,

When I use my R9 280X vapor-x graphics card to mine bitcoins and I overclock my card to 1080 or any higher than factory clocks after only 1 minute it throttles back to the factory 1070 mhz core clock. Do you know the causes of that problem and how can I solve it ?
My system is 4770k (factory clock) psu corsair cx750m motherboard msi mpower z87
Note : I have been mining for 1 week on 1220 mhz core clock with that card without any problems ! ???

Thanks in advance !!

Hi,
I'm also owner of this type of GPU. What solved my problem was to lower the GPU's temperature (below 73'C, try more with additional fan if needed). Then it should be fine. If you have older batch of these cards (serial numer similar to 1348xxxx), try undervolting by Sapphire Trixx SW. With clocks around 1080 it should be stable at 1,081V, over 1100 rise voltage higher - 1.120-1.160V

Is the temperature getting to high? When my rig runs slower, I either ventilate better or clean the rig and get rid of the built up dust with compressed air.

you have to keep it under 72 or 73 or it will throttle

get a box fan from the store for $20 and put it right next to your computer case, blowing on the fan

good luck :)

I have the very same type of card and it is running nicely overclocked at 85 degrees.

But why are you mining BTC with GPU, it costs more than you get. Youäd be better of buying BTC, it would be cheaper. Try som altcoins instead and trade them for BTC!

What way do you position something like a desk top fan in relation to the GPU? I have a pc tower (with the side panel removed) and everytime I put the fan up against the tower, the damn GPU temp GOES UP! Is it because the side airflow from the desk fan is messing with the upward airflow from the card fans? Makes no sense to me.

It's an MSI R9 280x by the way.

Try to get higher on core voltage, it may be not enough

My rig is not in the computer case, it's in open space.. If you need to leave it in the case then you need to close it and provide better airflow (more fans to front/back parts of the case)
