Title: Image proxy protect people from themself? Passes exif
Post by: bitpop on January 18, 2014, 07:06:36 AM
I know this forum is liberal. But certain precautionary steps should be taken.

Right now the proxy passes exif data, what do you think about sterilizing images? This is a real threat with more and more gps coordinates being included.

Example (no gps though): https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi.i.cbsi.com%2Fcnwk.1d%2Fi%2Ftim2%2F2014%2F01%2F03%2FDSC_0758.jpg&t=536&c=lzjV3-xLXoRlNg

I'm thought somebody said the proxy removes exif data? I guess people can remove that themselves though before posting, or am I missing something here?

Yes they can remove it themself

People usually use imgur which sanitizes

Oh, I might've got it mixed up with imgur actually.

The purpose of the image proxy is to protect people from each other (eg, IP-tracking images), not from themselves. The latter has never been the forum's job.

Yeah that makes sense. Exif filtering is an extra load.

So psa, filter exif yourself or make sure to use imgur which does it.

Is that what 'gps location info' on most phone cameras refers to?

Yes the GPS info is recorded into the exif data from a smartphone if set up to do. Most Ive seen can be disabled.

I'm pretty sure they all can be turned off in the settings of your phone.
