2048 cores, sounds tasty! and the 190W TDP is nice too!

Is it me or does the 78XX series sound like there going be the better bang for buck. The price difference is going be a fair chunkable size too.

7850 - 1408 Core - 90W
7870 - 1536 Core - 120W
7950 - 1920 Core - 150W
7970 - 2048 Core - 190W

This being true, the 7X70 series of cards are truely not going be worth the extra £££ they will be asking for. I predict the 7x50 series to remain king of the mining H/W cards. So that leaves me with....

7850 - 1408 Core - 90W
7950 - 1920 Core - 150W

512(24%) cores extra at the cost of 60W(30%) and thats not includint the difference in price of these cards, which is easily going be around £100. I suspect the gap will be even bigger for the 7870/7970 comparirision, so....

7870 - 1536 Core - 120W
7970 - 2048 Core - 190W

Suprise, 512(25%) extra cores at the cost of 70W(34%) and again, the cost difference between the 7870 to the 7970 will be even bigger imo.

Weather the XDR2 memory is fgoing come into play i dont know but i have a feeling the 78XX series might just be the better mining card. Gaming, well, 79XX everytime :) I see more driver issues with the new architecture also on the 79XX series. Release date anyone...... :)

October or Novemeber?

It's a new arcitecture we could be in for one hell of a supprise in either direction

Only the 7970 & 7990 are new architecture.  The others are simply smaller, faster, cooler version of 69xx series.

A die shrink means AMD can put twice the shaders in the same amount of silicon for the same amount of power and heat.
40nm to 28nm is about 1.85% more, so im informed :) Also, i think you mean the 7950 and 7970, AND what WILL BE the 7990 (2x 7850's OR 7870's). Heat and power issues deciding i would expect as usual :)

Yes I did mean 7950 & 7970 will be new (low cards will use same architecture).  7990 will likely be two downclocked 7970s is history is any guide.

28nm is half of 40nm.  Remember it is two dimensional.

So (28/40) * (28/40) = 49%

Another way to look at it is, a chip with same number of transistors would have a length 70% as long and a width 70% as long thus the surface area would be 49% as much.

Ah, of cause. Obvious when pointed out :)
