Title: Why do people play Minecraft?
Post by: Minsc on September 07, 2011, 11:14:07 PM
Graphics are terrible.  I don't see any gameplay, just some boring world design stuff that's so tedious and dull, then you just explore a boring world with horrible graphics, including a square sun.

They enjoy it. Why else would they play it? Why do you hate chocolate and some people love it? They just do.

It's alot like Legos.

I love it. Graphics are meaningless, so long that the gameplay is there and is conveyed properly with the graphics given. In the case of Minecraft, the graphics are part of the gameplay.

The entire premise of the game is to build stuff and to survive. If you don't like that, then you probably won't like Minecraft.

It's best to get private on a server with a couple friends.

Last night, I built a lava moat around my house to protect me from creepers..... in retrospect I probably shouldn't have built it out of wood.
http://i53.tinypic.com/2eyjdhs.png

Poor house. :(
A buddy of mine came over and helped me rebuild it and build the moat to where it was safe.

Still.... poor house. :(

Graphics are terrible.

It's pixelated goodness!

There are some mods that make games in the worlds... but it's more of a retro fun thing.

Have you tried?

well besides you can build a functionin computer in there, most of the gameplay is hard to explain. You decide to give the game a go, and you sit there just clearing out a flat area, to make a stupid simple house and next thing you know the cops are breaking down your door, cause no one has seen you for a month and you try to show them the cooler aspects of your house and they think you are a man from 1999 and dont care that you finally found your first diamond

Pretty much this.  It's virtual legos and the most addictive game I've ever played.  Totally free sandbox game with a nearly unlimited world is what a lot of us dreamed of as kids, now we're finally got it.  It's actually the only video game I play.

i said the same thing many times.. i even tried it a couple of times and said WTF is the point. People say graphics dont matter as long as game play is good, well I couldnt even find the game play the first few times I played.

I am the only one in my group of friends that plays this game. "Why?", they ask. Because my gaming rig is mining 24/7 and all I have is my eeePC. If I make money and enjoy doing it, why not?

Minecraft is fun. Everybody loves blocks. Especially hundreds of different blocks with different uses. And suns and people and creepers made of blocks. Anyone want a cheap account, PM me.

I like the survival/adventure aspect of it.  Doing adventure maps is really fun and it's cool to just start on remote island and do everything you can to survive.

Everyone interested in Minecraft should check out Latura. It is being made by the developers of EvilMineCraft (Which was a mod).

They are bringing a lot to the table.

I for one don't play Minecraft. I prefer Dwarf Fortress. ;)

Minecraft is your old-new digital lego. Though it's get boring after a while, if you play alone.

Ah yeah. Cool stuff.

Tekkit is just Bukkit server plugin engine with Technic pack overlaid. Formerly technic was just industrialcraft + buildcraft and not much else.

Sadly, now it contains eloraam's "redpower" which I can't stand. (( if only because on a personal level, eloraam can make developing minecraft mods and features as unpleasant as working with luke here in the bitcoin community ))

Yeah, it's much better multiplayer. The "whitelist only" server I'm on typically has 3-20 people on (depending on what time of day)

@Ivica omg omg omg omg damn you. I want to steal that avatar idea SOO BAD. Was it your own design if I might ask? For mine I might do something like this:

Stop Motion Rubik's Cube (http://youtu.be/eQ8ZWMlObGE)

Love the song. I have more stuff by them. They're called "the postal service" / "such great heights" (http://youtu.be/0wrsZog8qXg)is the song in question :)

Here's my take:

When we were kids, most of us probably wanted to build stuff in one way or another, whether it was an obsession, or just a lazy-day idea. Minecraft makes it possible for us to build anything with only the limits of our imaginations and the "blocks" available to us. (Lego) So if we can build a house a hundred stories high, and then burn it down with nothing lost except time, why not do it?

Minecraft is simply the best game I've ever played. I've been resisting it for the long time because of ugly graphics, but after I started plying, I realized that it's actually part of the game.

For those who like survival mod and are fans of post-apo, try PAS-HC server http://pashc.zapto.org/ (http://pashc.zapto.org/). There are mods like BuildCraft, Forestry and many others... also, HC in the name means everything is allowed there.

If Minecraft is a digital Lego set, DF is a digital ant colony. Well, if your ants were drunken, bearded assholes that occasionally went crazy and killed all the other ants. I can't stand the original graphics, though.

I don't use original graphics set, Mayday or Ironhand graphics packs are way to go. Though DF still has long way before ver 1.0. But the feature list is enormous. ;D
P.s. if someone lacks sounds, you may also get "Soundsense".

No, it's not my design. Just spend a hour with gimp and you may get your own avatar with a moving picture (gif) from video you mentioned. :)

I feel the same way. It's not about the graphics...it's about the creativity. I can defy physics and build whatever the hell I want. I got bored once and built a giant penis tower that had a lava moat and a tree on the head. And if you traveled into the testicles you'd find a portal to the netherworld.
What other game would allow you to do all that ridiculous stuff!!?!?

Assembling a group of people to build something cool in coop... is cool. The game's not perfect by any means, still it ranks pretty high, can't think of any recent game I liked better.

Some of the things we built:

  • Strong room with timed key combination and piston construction to move a 4x4 security gate into the wall
  • Railway system through Skylands, complete with automated train station, automatic gates, timed stops, and all those little gimmicks
  • Hidden arrays of rapid-fire arrow dispensers. The trolls love doing that: pistons open up innocent-looking earth, thousands of arrows make the landscape furry seconds later.
  • Automated monster spawners and killers for XP (Survival mode)
  • Chicken-powered timer loops ??? Okay, that doesn't really work, but it looked funny.
  • ROM, transistors, and some of the more fancy logic devices
  • Labyrinth with riddles inside
  • Pointless buildings with red buttons. DO NOT PRESS. Sometimes, obsidian parts remain. :P
  • Large Skyland castle which I'll not bother to list all parts of
  • A controlled railway system with a redstone torch display that shows the current routing
  • RANDOM SUPER NINTENDO PIXEL ART
  • A stage with a Deus Ex Machina to make people appear where there's no exit visible
  • I like building bridges. With layers of arches, for water and rail and stuff. 8)
  • Terraforming! Voxelsnipered a 100-height mountain range with a temple inside, river coming down from it with a large waterfall, little hot springs in the snow on the top. :)
  • Yin-Yang disks. MAY IT BE AS THE PATTERN'S CHOSEN, OH WHEEL OF TI... *coughs*
  • While we're at that, someone scripted Waygates. And Stargates. Admittedly awkward on the same map, but still awesome. 8)
  • Proud when people notice architecture ideas are stolen from Fate of Atlantis! ;D

I admit most of that is sitting there unfinished, or just made to never be finished. But even a construction site can look awesome. :P I'd show pics, but the modded-to-death creative server with the big structures is offline and a survival one running instead. And we're all too lazy to fix the big one atm. Oh well.

Bottom line, it's just awesome fun to build stuff. Normal games get boring quickly, 'cause you've soon seen everything. Games like SupCom or Anno allow to scale up a bit, and that makes them cool. Oh, I remember our 1404 empire, "Yamanote Sen" is now a ship transportation ring! ;D But they too just max out. Minecraft holds for a bit longer by supplying a world of practically infinite size and very basic building blocks.

I won't deny the Lego link. Same group that was on the server built a Lego cathedral a few years back. Maybe you just gotta like that sort of thing to like Minecraft.

So, uhm, why do people play Counterstrike? ???

Its definitely popular for the same reasons why EVE: online and DayZ are popular. You're playing in a massive sandbox where there are no definite rules and you can make your own game out of it. Its the idea of ultimate freedom that makes it so massively popular.

In EVE you can be a pirate, a space technician, a space trucker, a spy, a troll, a bounty collector, a diplomat and etc without ever having to change some skill set or characters. Its all based on your personal imagination and intellect.

In DayZ you can create your own survival story as a bandit, survivor or hero and do whatever you want with your story without ever bowing down to some quest master. Or you can bow down to a human squad leader from a bandit squad developed itself with no clan system of any kind doing missions that are only relevant to that moment.

In minecraft you can create your own world and environment. You can choose exactly how the aesthetics of the game will look like and form anything you can imagine. You can create a town with banks, hospitals and police stations or you can build a massive castle adjacent to another equally massive castle and have wars. Or you can escape to the wilderness and build a small hut that leads to an a massively majestic underground mining city full of redstone contraptions and railways.

oh neat. I know a lot of people who play eve, but never really thought to compare it to minecraft. I've played eve myself, just can't really justify to myself spending ~150 USD or so per year on it when I could instead use it for travel expenses to take a round-trip bus somewhere in meatspace or get a BFL jalapeno or something.

And it's actually pretty accurate, so far as it goes... The official site (https://minecraft.net/) says it even better: Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens. It also has music by C418!

I'd like minecraft better if you could save what you build on your own machine. I like Roblox, but still I think you need to pay monthly to build more than 1 place. It's fun to build stuff and blow it up especially when others are visiting the place and they have no clue what is going to happen. kaboom!

You can.

That's how singleplayer mode works 100% of the time.

Assuming you're using a windows computer, paste in this on the start menu search thingy:

%appdata%\.minecraft\saves

Also, for multiplayer, if the server admin is willing you might be able to get them to export your creations to a singleplayer-type save file and email it to you or provide a download link (if so, just put it in the saves folder shown above)

The server I play on we sometimes import and export things to the server that way.

Err, actually, to clarify / rephrase my above statement slightly:

That's how ((the full / paid version of minecraft)) singleplayer mode works 100% of the time

Why yes, you can do that as well: MCEdit -- it is open source now, and even has a "schematic" system (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/13807-mcedit-minecraft-world-editor-now-open-source/)

MCEdit is the main tool we use on our server for moving and/or cloning areas and projects between and within maps.

(( This method in addition to worldedit plugin... World edit is nice, it lets us do it in realtime on a live, running server, but that's a bit more advanced ))

Minecraft is an awesome video game, but it's even more than that.

I don't play video games much but I can tell Minecraft is a milestone in video game history.   I also sincerely believe it will succeed where other games such as Second Life had quite failed.  It created the basic blocks (pun intended) for a global, user-friendly virtual reality.

I play Minecraft and own one of the larger and older servers around. I play it because of the open nature of it all. I am not bound to do what the game creators want me to do, if I don't feel like slaying monsters I can go build something epic. If I want to make a adventure map I can. The game is never ending, that is my appeal to it.

It isn't all about what you see, but what you can imagine.  Same with the 'gameplay', why be led when you can explore.
