Title: How ridiculous is the newbie restriction?!
Post by: CaptainPatent on January 18, 2014, 10:58:53 PM
I'm only here because fast-pool does their support through this website. I'm currently locked out and the only way to remedy this situation is via PM or message in a different thread which I can't access. It isn't like I haven't used a forum before and perhaps general moderation would be a better way to go.

I'm only saying all of this because apparently my first post must be "substantial" and I have no idea of the requirement for the substance contained therein.

Regardless, I suppose I'll cross my fingers that 4 hours from now, I'll be able to begin the process of getting my fast-pool account unlocked.

I'm in the same boat as you, so this is also my obligatory and "substantial" first post. This is a second sentence, as my first post requires several sentences.  :D

I'm sure this newbie posting requirement is a function of previous security breaches, or something to that effect, so I honestly don't find it to be ridiculous. Inconvenient, yes. Annoying, sure. But it's understandable, I guess.

I wonder if this is substantial enough? I guess I could post a recipe for soup or something...  :)

Absolutely agree with You. Im not locked anywhere, but hey, can talk to other people either. Just because of this ridiculous rule. I cant see what suppose to secure.

If Im here for some flooding, there is nothing easier, then make one post, wait and start SPAMing. So same as You, Im on this post just because I need to post "substantial" post.

And once more I do agree with general moderation better then this. Hope You get Your fast-account account unlocked.

How long do I have to wait? Since I need a substantial post I suppose I should edit this to be a little longer. I am unclear on the mechanism through which people are approved on this site.

I am heavily following this forums for about 9 months now but only recently felt the urge to start posting.
Well, it took me some time to figure out how to get post permissions and so I ended up here.

Judging from the ridiculous stuff I discovered in some threads on this forum, a whitelist might make sense.
However, it seems to fail preventing people of questionable [self redacted] to spread their brain farts.

But I guess it would be worse without that procedure  ;)

EDIT: typos

how do we get out of this newbie jail

The restriction isn't that unrealistic. If you've been around forums much you know spam can easily get out of hand with many sites restricting newbies for 20+ posts. I don't see how anyone can run an online business without a contact form or email, but that's just me.

Seems like it takes a few posts and a four hour wait period minimum to escape newbie jail?

Title: Re: How ridiculous is the newbie restriction?!

The newbie restriction seems reasonable to me.  However the major problem I see is that there is a limit on the number of posts a single IP can make in 360 seconds.

Any user that uses an ISP that uses a transparent proxy is at a serious disadvantage.

If another user from my ISP posts then ALL users of that ISP have to wait the 360 seconds until they can post, and then it's a lottery of who get's in first.

The removal of the IP restriction would go a long way to helping newbies.

I don't like it much ether but.. if it wasn't the way it is i'm sure there would be a lot of people screaming.  It is why i'm registered so long and have like not posts.... probably a good thing though that i don't post much :-)

I am also still restricted. Hopefully this will be resolved soon, so that I can use the forum.

This restriction is to discourage spammers.

The newbie restriction is here for a good reason.

I agree. I know it's annoying at first, but the time limits and restrictions are quickly lifted. These people would be moaning a hell of a lot more if the forum was overrun with spambots and crap and the forums being down all the time from ddos attacks etc.

OK, so a substantial post, hmmm, let's see, it's almost as if we were back at school having to write essays for the sake of writing essays, except it's worse as it's supposed to be a substantial essay about anything whatsoever, so I for one suddenly get philosophical. Why are we here, what's the purpose of all existence? Is that writing essays for the sake of writing essays? I don't think so. But then again there's some point in that restriction, too many people having nothing better to do then troll right?

I would not even bother but like many other people I find myself in a situation where the support of a pool I'm trying to participate in and like very much is being handled via this forum so I guess I have to do it, just like some other irritating stuff one has to do because there's other people who have ruined it for newbies in the past.

Substantial enough? Or am I a robot? Who knows, I'm bleeding all right.

Hello there I got this funny message that a post from the same ip was sent less than 360 seconds before mine.

I just wanted to say i truly believe that newbies should be under strict control.

I wish you all a good bitcoin experience :)

Can you provide the exact rules to be able to have access on the full forum.
I was thinking that there is a minimum of 4 hours online but apparently it is not enough.

thank you in advance.

Found this:

You can only post in the Newbie and Local sub-forums till you have 5 posts and at least 4 hours on the forum.  The other two restrictions are you need 1 post to be able to send a PM and 10 posts to put a link in your sig.

I'm also new here. I decided finally, after reading these forums for a month now, to register. I understand the point of this restriction and I think it is good, however now I cannot make a post that I wanted to make. Well tomorrow morning I will be able to hopefully. It isn't urgent. The disappointment will pass and this will be a small price to pay. I'm also blabbering a bit due to the ambiguous substantial sentence what ever rule. :)

Yeah its seems a bit nuts that i can not post in most places. How long until I am? Is it 10 posts? Where can I post up until then? Just here?

Do I have to have a certain number of characters in each post like someone suggested. How many?

It's in place to moderate a forum that puts this much strain on any affordable server's capacity

First post after many months of browsing! Regardless this forum is a wealth of information for anyone interested in crypto!

Just my 2 cents, and I do agree with the restrictions. I'm sure this doesn't affect ddos attacks. One can push ecr's without any active server account, not to mention all users have limited access right away. Anyway, what kind of hacker would want to damage a site so in-line with our values and beliefs?

All newbie restrictions were lifted on Jan 20.

New users can now immediately start posting unless they are using suspicious IPs.
