News influences the decisions and feelings of traders and thus the price of Bitcoin.
Personally, I agree with this type of regulation especially against FUD, ICOs, and fake bumping.

I think they are focusing on ICOs and alt-coins, which are generally scams about manipulating price, supply, etc. It would be very healthy for the crypto world if they locked up a bunch of these scammers.

In a relatively unregulated and globally-active market, why would the US spearhead the probe into illicit trading? This means they already have interests on the said market and are looking for ways to tax the exchange operators hard alongside the users. What I want the US to do is a major crackdown on illicit ICOs as they're the ones who's causing major trouble in the cryptospace right now, and market manipulation will always be there no matter how many investigations and probes they'd do. Also, have a peek on traditional stock markets and see whether market manipulation is present or not.

Not only ICO and altcoins but all cryptos and to be more specific they are focusing the Exchanges platforms to fight against traders who practice "spoofing" and "washing" methods, making fake orders, etc.
But the US govt can't control every exchange, especially the ones out of The US which have nothing to do with the SEC or CFTC

Inthink it can affect the price of BTC after. Governments are really working hard to provide a check on scamming in crypto and most especially volatility (they want to make it become like the stocks market). Anyways the fact is do we really want to loose the volatility? I think it shiuld be the next discuasion  ;D

I still vaguely understand the meaning of the manipulation of the value of cryptocurrency, I think fraud often occurs in the crypto through ICO, I fully support all the rules that will be determined by the government, this needs to be done so that fraud can be prevented. and even eradicated.

What ever happened to the US investigation on tether (usdt) and bitfinex from january 2018?

Its been 5 months with no news or update on either. The media made especially strong accusations against tether, claiming $80 billion in tether was utilized in buying bitcoin to keep btc's price overvalued. It is possible these "investigations" are merely FUD or politically motivated smear campaigns against crypto currencies.

If real evidence against tether had been found by now, it might make sense that they would have published it. The same with the media driven claim of russia "hacking" the US 2016 presidential elections. The media talked about that forever despite never finding any real evidence that such a thing took place.

Yep! I really was overwhelmed in a "flabbergastic" manner when I saw that news flash on TV today. So glad this is coming at a time when so much scams are struggling to ruin the crypto industry for all. It is now obvious that no matter what anyone says about the US, the industry still needs America to make a bold statement on the way forward for cryptocurrency to record more milestones. The probe is a welcome development.

I think they are just wasting their time trying to control every exchange. Instead of probing into the so-called "illicit tactics" of crypto traders, why not they track down "scam ICO's" first? Why focus on "ilicit tactics" when they can easily formulate a more strict regulation or implement regulations on crypto to fiat transactions that will help them limit the capabilities of what they refer to as "Illicit traders"?

Yes. sadly US government know what are the value of crpytocurrency especially in the future thats why they manipulating it. they buy large amount of token say they will become a crpytocurrency whales. thats not fair. they should have to work hard its unfair for those other trader cause they controlling the amount of tokens and its value

Doesn't take a genius to see that crypto can be quite easily manipulated by those "whales." You can even read about these pump and dump scandals where people were caught red-handed before they were able to dump on unsuspecting investors.

I'm quite positive that this is good news for crypto and hopefully this scares off manipulators who deserve to be behind bars.

This could actually be a good thing cause scammers will get what they've deserve and not freely doing illegal things like creating fake ICO's, causing FUD and cloud mining sites this is the reason why most people call crypto currency scam. The price fall because of this but it will have a good effect in long term basis.

They're not manipulating it.  Read.  They're looking into possible market manipulation and as RodeoX has pointed out, it's more about the ICO market than bitcoin.

I suspect that if this news is going to affect traders' behavior, it's already been priced in.  I'm not a firm believer in efficient markets, but in this case I don't think we're going to see any ups or downs because of the US government "probing" anything.

First of all no one should manipulate the price of crypto currency. only the investor and trader or miner of crypto has able to make a motion for moving up and down the price do not believe to the news that there is one agency to manipulate this.

Technically, any news about bitcoin can affect the price.

But let's be clear about what's going on here. The US Justice Department ONLY has jurisdiction and capability to investigate manipulation int he futures markets, which isn't related to the blockchain at all. None of the futures trades ever touch the blockchain, therefore any manipulation of futures orders cannot directly impact the price of bitcoin on the blockchain.

It sounds pretty awesome tho, but actually it must be secret. So anyone who will going to do it doesn't even know if there are some government will spying at them. Well,  about the price it should be a lot of changes then. I hope this thing will happens in each country so they can work together for bitcoin prices.

yes it will slightly affect btc, the question is, is it good or bad? is it to increase or decrease investments? if this probe is legit, some ICO will be regulated, it will boost trust on the community, trust in bitcoin, which will result in increase in buying btc, so the price will tend to go up which is obviously good for the traders, it is going to be a good chance to earn more profit.

Exactly, i believe that no one can manipulate the value of coins in market capitalization. Because its purely people of cryptocurrency who invested in a big capatal will create a massive price up and down which the volume affects the whole stocks exchange in the market. However, it should be part of US protocol to start conduct an arrest warrant for those members of cryptos who are scammers to avoid victims of scam ICO.

That article is correct a lot of ICO's are illegitimate in that they don't deliver what they promise or are a straight out scam and eliminating these would be healthy for the market as a whole just as much as regulating exchanges to eliminate manipulative trading activities

global network, what are they going to find other than what we all speculate, think

Definatly this is going to affect bitcoin and altcoins price because this manipulators are going to pull they find from the market.  This manipulations is not good for the development of cryptocurrencies industry as the blockchain technology was made to be a transparent system and not like the old financial system we have.

It may or may not do that depending upon the results that it implies on the whole market at at the end of it. I think its anyway good news as it is campaign against the criminal activities involving the bitcoin and crypto currencies. I think it will hamper the criminals not the normal investors like us. Who knows by taking down the unwanted investments in the criminal activity might just increase the reputation of the crypto currencies in perfect way.
So I would say just stick to the plan and enjoy the ride and see where US government goes with this.

Some big players are manipulating BTC price.Future and options crypto currencies trading fluctuate the BTC price most.Earlier  price movement was not limited  to such range for long time .But now its price are hanging  between 6kUSD to 10 K USD.Such investigation may bring more transparency and price hike for BTC.

The price are fluctuating because of SPF because it is purely  basis on demands  and supply rule.The big players heavily buys or sells then other person pour the money, big playes do the reverse.

About damn time. Bitcoin is exactly the type of thing you would expect from an unregulated market and the reason we need these financial regulations. I have no doubt that spoofing and other methods of market manipulation are taking place. Those with the means of manipulating the market for their own gain are absolutely taking advantage of their ability to move the market to their own benefit. After all, if there's no regulation or monitoring of the trading systems, why wouldn't you? These fraudulent practices are still illegal and they still exploit people who don't have the ability to know when they're at the disadvantage. Our whole system is predicated on notion of equal opportunity, and clearly that is absent in this market. I am very interested in how this probe will turn out.

Great views,yes the effect may bring a big dump because this may take a correction but the long term will benefits all of us who trust this community.

If this topic is indeed and there will be a sanction that might happen then truthful market is will be on the go in future,not like now that it seems like a fake marketing,when manipulation is controlling the whole cryptocurrency

Because it's a waste of time. Everyone can buy a domain, hosting anonymously, set up a website and create his own ICO. Even if they try to fight the ICOs market they can do it only in The US. If I am a European citizen why shall I follow an American law? On the top of that ICO is also the new way to raise funds for startups

The US government resembles an elephant in a store with utensils. A lot of noise, a lot of rumbling and little good. When governments only pay attention to the crypto market (not only American), I feel sad, because there are very few adequate initiatives.

Not just locked mate,but this must bring to justice.i have a great feeling that this scammers are same persons that victimizing cryptonians over and over again using new projects one way or another.

regardless on what really happen or happening they learn a minor factors that they can trick some people when it comes to manipulating the prices of Bitcoin in certain exchange but we can not say they have the total control of what prices or value is to publish every now and then.

Its good if they focus on it actually it has nothing to do with manipulations in the market it will not be out of it. This news has a lot of mean and a variety of emotions that we may feel and thinking that how this really works after all.

They obviously had interest all along, and we know how much they kick against illegal and illicit trading right from the onset. Although they made a valid point, that a manipulated market by investors will end up being perceived wrongly, and let's face it, that is not good.

I know how much manipulation of some cryptocurrencies can be so annoying as a trader just because some whales always see it as an opportunity to use pattern and volume to deceive traders into getting a position and these days it has become a huge risk to trade the cryptocurrency market, but like you said anyway, it is a decentralized market, so all these kind of stuffs are bound to happen.

It's impossible to track fake warrants. If I placed a sell order and then changed my mind and canceled it due to a trend change in the market. Who can determine this manipulation or not? It's unreal. I see big orders on all exchanges, but they don't affect me. I don't pay any attention to them because they are cancelled until the price of coins approaches their level.

I don't think that the news are matching up again. I have read about this before (https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/bitcoin-price-cryptocurrency-exchange-coinbase-gemini-investigation-new-york-a8309261.html) and it is said that the U.S. government is keen on investigating the transparency of the exchanges, they are here issuing about the "fake bids" being shown into their system electronically but not the "fake bids" being issued by traders. You see the thing about fake bids being issued by traders is that bids are always have the potential to be matches fake bid electronically aren't. If they prove that this exchanges are the ones manipulating the prices than that its a different thing as it involves fraud to a higher level.

It will affect the market in positive way, the market price manipulation has become the order of the day by whales. This move would allow crypto enthusiasts have faith in their investment on btc as well as altcoins because whatever happens to btc affect all altcoins, i think frequent dump will reduce drastically.

it greatly affects bitcoin prices, they manipulate prices so that prices can be controlled. but to do so requires substantial funds. I think it can only be done by people who have big capital.

With what we can see the price surged for a while and is now getting back a little bit so many of these whales are starting to manipulate it again.

It's hard to assume that dumps will be reduced, you don't know yet on how the crypto market works if you are into it for a year then you understand how it fluctuates. This can be a boost to the investors but for now it can't stop the dumps.

While I do not remember reading any reports like that I always assumed governments will try to manipulate the price of bitcoin, the problem is that it is a lot harder than they think if they buy bitcoin to crash the price later they will be investing huge amounts of money only to lose them later and while they can afford that right now, as bitcoin becomes more valuable then that manipulation becomes more expensive.

This is so embarrassing for this human race that we never ever retained something so piety, virtuous and clean. We always want to demoralize and victimize the thing and want to inject out the best results illegally. Right now, hundreds of people are just doing this. Despite being decentralized, bitcoins are still being damaged internally and externally and that is so hilarious.

There are no reason why you would follow an American law, but the laws made in the USA might trigger global action from other countries, to do the same. One of the functions of the SEC is to protect the consumer and if they can shutdown only 1 large ICO based scam, then it would cause a ripple affect in the scammer community.

I want them to make an example of these criminals that are hurting our efforts to grow Bitcoin adoption and this must trigger a global hunt for scam ICOs and Ponzi schemes.

I was reading this news today and honestly I believe this is a good thing for the space.
The manipulation is obviously becoming annoying and rampant that even the whales end up robbing it on your face.

More like they always try as much as possible to sometimes send the wrong signals so some traders can flop and at the end their stop loss getting hit while they make a huge amount from it. This is crazy and should be stopped and all the things said in the article are pretty obvious and glaring which I am sure so many traders must have seen.

it is a good sign actually. i dont think it can affect to crypto market in negative way. however the question should be what are they going to do and how can they do it? they will try to check the exchanges that are under their control only. that is only the thing that they can do and it will make no affect at all.

Really going to be healthy, although they made mention of wash trading and some crazy stunts pulled by some high volume traders in the market and how they are going to be traced and dealt with. Actually, it has always been against the law to manipulate the markets, and from the look of things, I guess due to the decentralized nature of the market, some big traders have used that several times to deceive traders into entering a position while turning themselves to mind readers and using that manipulation to enrich themselves.

The move upward that a lot of people must have seen as a bounce actually seems to me like it is highly manipulated and we are going back down to still go test the downtrend line anyway. I hope this can actually be thoroughly monitored if possible, as sometimes; it is giving the wrong impression.

Yes the US government has started this probe in the manipulation of the crypto currencies but I do not think it is something very bad as long as it does not lead to tax implementation. This is just a check on the crypto market to eliminate the scam coins from the crypto market. The prices of a coin can only be high or low as a result of the market invisible hand and the demand for that specific coin. Besides, there has been no government regulations over the crypto market as a result of which the technology also suffered due to frauds. This step might lead things in a good direction. So I do not think it will affect Bitcoin.

Honestly, spoofing, washing and fake orders has become so rampant. These are the things I have noticed myself since I started trading cryptocurrency and the truth is that it can be very frustrating sometimes, knowing that even with some certainty of change of trend, there are just some set of people who pretty much use that opportunity to crack up on making huge gains from stop losses. It is pathetic and should be stopped, as that gives you more stress trading and thinking of the possibility of manipulations at the same time. However, like you said, it would be hard since this can only be applicable to exchanges in the US jurisdiction. It is a decentralized market and I guess we just have to get used to that.

The point is if there's laws against it, you won't be setting up the domain from the United States or taking American investors. If you do either, you're bound by the American laws surrounding such activity. If not, you're right that you probably wouldn't care about the American laws since no part of your operation touches America so there is no jurisdiction. However, Kim "Dotcom" tried to hide overseas while he ripped off the intellectual property of thousands of American companies, and look how well that turned out for him. I think that this is an attempt to solve the problem that the market is facing today and that is the existence of many ICOs that are legitimate scam, which are flooding it, they are creating fake purchases on tokens and coins just to trick traders into investing in them which lead to manipulating the market in a way, and this might have a big influence on the bitcoin price maybe not immediately but in the long term.

It is a really good initiative taken by the government and it will have an immediate effect on the price manipulation and we will have a stable movement in the future without any undue price rally in both directions, if they find out the manipulation how they are going to handle things is interesting and they might impose huge fines for the people behind it.

Well, it is something most of us are already getting used to, most especially as traders, and the truth is manipulated markets can actually be annoying and I do hope things like this will be fixed at the end.

Apparently, it is mostly done by those with huge capital, so as to be able to convince or rather confusing most especially traders into getting into a market and then clamping down on them. Since we have a decentralized market with no rules and so on in our hands, things like this are expected anyway.

Government will not be able to manipulate cryptocurrency forever because there are different market's online and taxes will not be implemented since there are transaction fee's already.

That is just the problem and it is so pathetic that the human greedy nature will just always be there and we keep complaining every time about how regulation sucks when it is simple and plain that when generally humans are given a chance with no rules, people will do whatever they like and please at the detriment of others just because of the amount of one they want to make and simply just use their own position in the market to do that.

This will benefit us, i think. Price manipulation is evident in the price of bitcoin. If whales sell their coins (which owns a huge part of the total bitcoin population), then certainly it will impact the price of bitcoin. If the US government will find out about price manipulation, i just hope it will stop. So that bitcoin will not stop from growing.

Just because a whale sells a large amount of bitcoins and the market price is materially impacted doesn't mean that there is manipulation at play. Price is a function of both supply and demand, and when a large amount of coins are listed for sale, it increases the amount of supply and decreases the amount of demand as those orders are filled. This naturally moves the price down as you would expect and there's nothing manipulative about it. The type of manipulation being discussed and investigated is that in which large traders engage some artifice like spoofing to trick the market into thinking something is happening when it is not, such as pretending to list a large amount of bitcoins for sale in order to make supply look larger than it is but removing the order before any sales take place, thereby affecting the price without actually selling anything. These types of orders are fraudulent under the securities laws, and this is what the government is looking into with crypto now.

Yeah, we cannot say exactly who manipulates at the moment, but best guess should be the whales somehow. The governments on the other hand are the ones probing the manipulation done in most of the exchanges right now as it is, and it is not like they are the ones doing the manipulation. Yeah I agree. ICO's and new Altcoins should be regulated because as what you have said bunch of scammers try to manipulate prices, supply etc. They are the major problem with investors arround the world that is why some people refuse to get into cryptocurrency investments. At the end of the day, fraud is illegal whether or not Bitcoin is regulated. There is no defense against committing fraud with Bitcoin just because the government doesn't officially regulate Bitcoin like it does banks or stock exchanges. People committing fraud are breaking the law, and the government has an interest in prosecuting those people. Anyone who disagrees with the government rooting out fraud in Bitcoin exchanges is probably either committing it or profiting off it in some way. We're 9 years into this now, and there have been far too many scams, thefts, and frauds. It's time those people are targeted.

I think it has already been discovered that tether had artificially inflated the price of bitcoin, but it has not been made into an official prosecution. This paves the way for a better stable coin and hopefully bitcoin will grow more organically unlike last year's pump

As far as this is a nagetive news it will definitely going to affect the price of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.  USD proving of the manipulations of bitcoin price is still another plan to bring bitcoin price down.  However I know bitcoin is very strong and it can face a lot of opposition and it has fight a lot of fights and still remains strong.
