Title: News Coverage of the Internet in 1981...
Post by: s_s on January 19, 2014, 07:22:49 PM
...interesting perspective perhaps on the current coverage of Bitcoins today relative to where things may be in not that many more years into the future.

Definitely interesting to see how they thought about the internet back then. Although I don't agree that bitcoin is going to revolutionize the world as the internet has done. If that's the point you're trying to make.

In its essence bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general are still a part of the internet and that is why internet is still much more innovative and revolutionizing.

It could be Bitcoin can revolutionize the Internet itself.  Think about how free exchange is the essence of the Internet, which is also the essence of Bitcoin.  And not just "money" - do some research on the bitcoin protocol, you will find it can be used in many wonderful ways.

Reducing friction and increasing the velocity of monetary transactions should stir the pot pretty well though.

Think about confirmation times compared to ACH transfers. When I pay someone via Paypal, that money is locked up for 4-6 *days*.

If I make a payment with Bitcoin, that money is only locked up for about an hour. This could lead to compression in spending behavior. Economic cycles that previously took days could be completed in hours.

No one knows what sort of impact that will have, but I'd say it qualifies as potentially revolutionary.

Well I meet the video half way in time.

In 1997 I recall connecting to the Internet when travelling in Europe using a rotary phone connection, once I figured out how to tell Windows 95 to dial the modem with "pulse" in order to be compatible with the hotel's phone system that dated from the 1940s

Once connected the Internet experience was very much like today only slower. The modem connection on the other hand was very much as in the video.

Edit: I recall the connection speed was 33kb/s. In one hour this would allow for 14.8 MB of Internet traffic, which even after allowing say 10% for overhead is more than enough to support a full Bitcoin node after doubling the blocksize limit!
