Home cable connection, marketed as 100/7. There's got to be some advantage to leaving the countryside and moving to the big city (well, big by Swiss standards). :) Title: Re: How do you get online? What speeds you getting? Post by: satamusic on March 08, 2011, 02:47:24 PM you guys test too close, choose a server farther away to see if the connection is good enough when connecting to overseas servers.
what good is having 100mbit fiber to home when you only get few tens of megabits when connecting to servers a few thousand miles away... Title: Re: How do you get online? What speeds you getting? Post by: theGECK on March 08, 2011, 07:25:23 PM I see numbers here far above what I'd ever use. If you don't run servers, what do you use your tremendous bandwidth for? You only need 2-3 Mb/s for video streaming, and there isn't much 1080p streaming video that would require lots more right now. Even blu-ray only requires 25-35 Mb/s!

Even blu-ray only requires 25-35 Mb/s! I try to avoid video streaming because I find the user experience really clunky. I prefer to use video on demand if possible. The other day I needed to catch a train and 10 minutes before leaving the apartment I realised I wanted to download a few TV shows to watch on the journey. My 100/7 connection allowed me to do this in 2 minutes via the Miro player instead of the 10-20 minutes it would have taken on a "standard" 10/2 connection. I am a convenience junkie, and I'm prepared to pay an extra $30 a month for those small luxuries. Title: Re: How do you get online? What speeds you getting? I guess I was lied to about the speed of my internet. It is a much slower upload than I am paying for. I believe the service I am using is bragging a download of 3.0 mbps and upload of 1.5 mbps. I am using firefox as a browser, maybe that is slowing it down, but I was expecting a lot more. Title: Re: How do you get online? What speeds you getting? Sucks they quote in bits and all your downloads get shown in bytes etc. That has to piss a few people off. Title: Re: How do you get online? What speeds you getting?
