Title: Crypto SCAM - HowTo protect yourself
Post by: aundroid on May 25, 2018, 02:36:39 PM
Hello everybody,

In this topic I would like to give an Overview of the most common SCAMS we are exposed daily.

I'll try to add more SCAMs over time, to give all Newcomers a nice Overview!

Table of contents
  • Phishing Websites (#post_websites)
    • Cryptonite by MetaCert (#post_cryptonite)
  • SCAM Airdrops (#post_airdrops)
    • Ask for Private Key (#post_private)
    • Send ETH (#post_eth)
    • Airdrop Rules (#post_rules)
  • Twitter (#post_twitter)
  • Pyramid Schemes (#post_pyramid)
  • Telegram (#post_telegram)

Websites
As probably everyone has noticed, the cloning of well- known crypto- sites is a very popular scam nowadays.
These cloned sites wanna get the users to enter their data and steal it.

Usually the presence of a green 'https' tells you if a site is legit or not.

https://i.imgur.com/CcsqVhE.jpg

Some of the Scam- Sites however found a way to display the green 'https' and 'secure' in the URL of the site.

https://i.imgur.com/26f8iOB.png

If you take a closer look at the URL, you can see little dots under the letters 'n'.

That you do not have to manually check the URL every time you visit a crypto- related site,
I'd like to introduce an nice Extension for the Chrome Browser I am using for a while now.

Cryptonite by MetaCert Link (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cryptonite-by-metacert/keghdcpemohlojlglbiegihkljkgnige)
(also available for Firefox:  Link (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cryptonite-by-metacert/))
https://i.imgur.com/pSyflZ5.jpg

Sorry guys, completely forgot to update this topic.

As everybody probably noticed, the Cryptonite extension was changed from 'free' to 'chargeable' (8$ / month, as far as I know).

So if you don't want to spend $96 a year on an extension (which I can understand) I would recommend you to bookmark all your relevant pages for now.

Besides, I can recommend you to install MetaMask (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/metamask/nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn) that gives very good phishing alerts.

I will revise the initial post in this thread when I have a little more time.

As always: Stay Safe Online!

As soon as you are on a verified Crypto page, the black shield on the toolbar changes its color from black to green!

If the sign does not turn green during the visit, one should assume (according to the description) that the visited site is not safe or rather not verified.

I have the extension in action for some time now and can really recommend it.
You don't need to manually re- check the URLs.

Recently, when I was browsing through some bounty threads and looking at the websites of some candidates, the extension already hit
the alarm.

https://i.imgur.com/i5S4TJj.jpg

Really nice  ;D

You cannot be safe enough when visiting crypto sites.

Airdrops

There are multiple ways to run a fake airdrop and scam people.

One very well known scheme of an fake airdrop looks like this:

You will be asked for your private key
https://i.imgur.com/TAHKrc9.jpg

They just ask for your private key.  ;D
In the Note they guarantee that "They will never use, store or collect your personal data (such as the private key)"  ;)

NEVER share your private key with anyone else!!!

Another scheme is the
"Send X amount of ETH to receive Y amount of airdrop shitcoin" scheme

Here is how it looks like:

https://i.imgur.com/ocRjpKy.jpg

Airdrop Rules:

- NEVER (seriously) NEVER ENTER YOUR PRIVATE KEY ANYWHERE!!

- Never send ETH to participate in an Airdrop

- SCAM Airdrops are often posted from brand new accounts on Twitter, so always check the Tweet- history and the Account registration date!

- You should also check their official channels before you take part in a 'suspicious' Airdrop, because they should have promoted the Airdrop somewhere.

Twitter

Everyone with a crypto-related Twitter Account has aleady seen them for months.
I am talking about the huge crypto scam botnet, who spread the word about fake airdrops/giveaways.
They reply to tweets posted by the legitimate account.

This is how it looks like:

https://i.imgur.com/wCaiNFv.jpg

I can only repeat, please just install Cryptonite MetaCert (Link above) which also has a Twitter support and look for the green shield.
If it's not green, assume the twitter account is a fake until you prove otherwise.

Pyramid Schemes

Pyramid Scheme - A Definition

https://i.imgur.com/FzL79Hj.jpg

Proof of Trevon James (PoTJ)

https://i.imgur.com/tmVDC2b.jpg

Proof of Trevon James, or PoTJ is an ERC-20 token named after Trevon James, a "crypto youtube and twitter influencer".
This scammer has also been involved in BitConnect which he openly advertised on his channels.

YouTube Channel:

https://i.imgur.com/yFB8Zc2.jpg

Concept:
“When someone buys or sells Proof of Trevon James Tewken, 20% of the buy and 25% of the sell price is split by the total number of coins and given as locked-in-rewards (priced in Ether)”.

Example:
Quote
If you were to buy into the contract with 1Eth and immediately sell it, you would get around 0.55Eth back. The reason for that is you lose 20% on the buy in, and 25% on the sell, ending up with around 55% of your initial ethereum. In other words, in order to break even the token price has to go up roughly 40% before you decide to sell it.

[source: https://themerkle.com/what-is-proof-of-trevon-james-potj-tewken/]

Beware shit like this. People like Trevon are people that the crypto community doesn't need.

https://i.imgur.com/t582wRg.jpg

Telegram

Nowadays everyone is a member of several crypto- related telegram groups, so it was only a matter of time before people were threatened by malicious attacks there as well.
A current threat, which I see a lot at the moment, concerns the .SCR files that are distributed almost everywhere.
These files look like this (name may vary, of course)

https://i.imgur.com/4aQ59si.jpg

VERY IMPORTANT:
Please guys NEVER, seriously NEVER EVER open such a file, not even if it looks like it was posted by an admin of the group!!
I can't stress this enough.

SCR files are executable script files. Executing a SCR file will only lead to a list of commands being run by the system.

Yours ways to prevent phishing scam sites is good, i would like to add my way to prevent this. I do bookmark all important sites, set hard and difference passwords for all sites ( i use google chrome to save password), enable 2FA.

Another action for this is to bookmark the legitimate site. Specially here in bitcointalk, tons of duplicate sites are trying to phish your account. I have a way of knowing if i am trying to be phished. See i always check the always logged in, so when you were asked to relogin, you'd be thinking "oh why do i need to login again?" Then you'd check the site, see if it's really bitcointalk.org.

This is a very good update. I have seen and heard of many who got scammed through phishing sites. Something similar to this has happened to a friend, who unknowingly provided his information on a phishing site and got scammed in the process. I think the crypto space now requires a lot of vigilance and care.

I have not a suggestion, but a question that you or maybe someone else can answer here.

Is it secure to type in my password or private key when I am connected to VPN? I always thought that VPN is made to make my online life safer, but I've heard recently that instead of it they can just steal my private keys, especially if I use VPN that is free. So how to make sure that my VPN is reliable and not malicious? Maybe I have to look up for something about this in the privacy policy? Or it's better just to disconnect from VPN while entering my passwords and private keys?

Cool guide. But I think it's always appropriate to have one great "Brains". Well, I also want to add, "Know your enemy." Examine all the schemes of fraudsters, and what they are doing. Then you don't have to read "how to protect yourself" every time. All schemes are similar to each other.

Try to enter only tested networks, allways take a look on the URL in the adress line, trust nobody, use different passwords

I agree with you, the schemes are often very similar.
But if you are new to the scene, you may not know all this stuff and this is where this Thread should help  ;)

Or it's better just to disconnect from VPN while entering my passwords and private keys?

In a public network like in a coffee shop etc. it is of course better if you use a VPN.
But I prefer a hardware wallet like a ledger nano.
You can also download MEW and run it locally.

You do not when they will attack. Even MEW was faked and somehow they made victims out of it.

Prevention should always be the first to be thought. Not just clicking on anything out of excitement.

Nice heads up bro, it is everybody's responsibility to make the cryptoworld void of scammers and hackers, triple checking url is essential because these scammers are on the prowl, we always think it won't happen to us until it does. Also I have done airdrops that asked for my private keys, I just ignore and pass.

Great OP. I would like to add few more well known phishing sites:

1. A bunch of sites impersonating MyEtherWallet. Never login to your MEW from the link you received from someone. Always use your bookmarks. That is advice you should remember for all exchange/wallet sites.

2. There is also at least two phishing versions of bitcointalk
Here are the links to threads with more info about this:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4559589.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3765354.0

In short these sites copy all the posts from bitcointalk and look very legit. You can often get a link to one of them when googling some bounty. They will ask you for login information and steal your user name and password. With the addition of merit, senior accounts are more in demand than ever, so be careful. You can additionally secure your bitcointalk account via signing BTC message on following thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.9520 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.9520)
But be prepared to wait for a long time in case you need your account recovered (half a year) and if you don't have a signed message from BTC address you control nobody will even listen to you.

Hello everybody,

In this topic I would like to give an Overview of the most common SCAMS we are exposed daily.

I'll try to add more SCAMs over time, to give all Newcomers a nice Overview!

Table of contents
  • Phishing Websites (#post_websites)
    • Cryptonite by MetaCert (#post_cryptonite)
  • SCAM Airdrops (#post_airdrops)
    • Ask for Private Key (#post_private)
    • Send ETH (#post_eth)
    • Airdrop Rules (#post_rules)
  • Twitter (#post_twitter)
  • Pyramid Schemes (#post_pyramid)

Thank you for this thread. I hope there will be less people who will now open their eyes so they will avoid being scam and wasting time. I knew phishing websites but not the next contents down there so it will be also helpful to me. Since December last year, I already avoid airdrops so maybe thats the reason why I got less scammed in airdrops.

Very good, way too many people are falling for scams which are easily avoidable if they just know what they are looking for and what they should looking at, with something like this then a lot of people can avoid the scams. I think phishing sites are the most notorious since most people do not bother to look at a site they are on before logging in

Looks like a very well written post. I guess this is going to help a lot of people who are either newbies or less tech savvies.
Everyone just needs to imprint this in mind:if something is too good to be true, then it probably is. Also don't forget, you can't get something for nothing. If someone is offering you something at no cost or at a cost that is too good, then something is fishy and you must avoid it at any cost. Just use your common sense to save yourself from scams.

Personally I have made up my mind that before trying any coin I have make sure it is fully in order and the project has a good reputation
And also the exchange that you will trade, look at URL before checking in or depositing your money. It won't consume that much time and it will save you a lot of money if you practice checking URL to avoid scam and phishing exchanges.

Thanks OP for the idea and your efforts to care this community :).

The best way to protect yourself from scam project is to do a thorough research about the project in question before thinking of investing your money or time into the platform, one of the way you can make a good research to know whether it's a scam or not is to check the ANN thread of the coin to see the opinion of others who are part of the project, just check out what others are saying about the project, is the review good or bad.

Edit:
It would be too good, if the open-post is getting updated time to time to spread awareness on latest vulnerable attacks and hacker's new tricks. But, unfortunately open-post's last update was done on early November of 2018 but OP is active here.

You have got a useful article there, which will be useful for newbies and those who have bee in the crypto space for quite some time now.
One of the most important thing we should learn to guide jealously is the private key to the wallet housing our assets. A lot of noobs in the crypto space have made this mistake before they could realize or learn to keep their wallets safe.

Nice topic. Scam is everywhere both Airdrop and Bounty and not even that, even some exchange are scam you will send your coin and you will eventually lost the whole stuff. The only way to protect yourself from crypto scam is by making investigations, you can't just invest in a project.you need to check  how solid the project is. I pity some people whoz buying ico. For me ico is a scam. Be watchful

These are helpful tips for the whole crypto community to be more secure. I like the featured add-on Crytonite shield though unfortunately its only has only a trial period for 30 days. I hoped this thread will be continuously updated for latest tactics in scam protection.

Options to protect yourself are already very much described, but you must understand that there are no guarantees that really could protect you. This simply will not happen because it is a cryptocurrency market.

I tried that, the Crytonite shield but I already used the 30 days trials. As of now, I used AVG for free I think it makes me help to filter those links that contents scam. So, far I didn't infect on malware virus which is very risky for us to make a scam. Yes, I agree that this thread is very helpful and I read it all because I want to know thou how to secure my wallet.

The best way to stay safe from being scammed in crypto is to do a proper and in-depth research on the project you want to invest in. At least, you might find some unrealistic things about the project. Proper research can make you 40% sage from being scammed.

Some points were really empasized on this posts and I found it really interesting on how we can protect ourselves on from scammers. Though it doesn't touched everything, atleast we have an idea to determined what are the possible scams.

I could remember that just late last year and early this year, there were so many projects who were indirectly asking for private keys, by claiming they water to create the hard fork of a particular coin and for people to do that by login to a scam site.

I couldn't think that phishing sites could be like that. We should be aware that even if they are copying the same url, there are still differences. Also, I remembered I've been scammed by one ICO who did not payed us their coins. I wasn't see that comin' and my efforts go to waste. Now I am not joining just some ICO projects.

For me, I always study carefully the projects I want to join. And scammers often take advantage of people's greed, so remind yourself, nothing is free, and don't be too greedy

This post is very insightful. This goes a long way to help new and old crypto enthusiasts  to be careful and spot scams,  including the high level scams. Like the illustration given for kucoin and Binance scam sites, almost exactly as the real ones. Thanks a lot once more, I learnt from this post. Safety is very important in crypto space.

Make sure we always be careful when we connect to the internet because we don't know where the hacker is. The hacker will try anything to get the information from us, and if it's related to the exchange, make sure you never share anything with other people. Just keep it for yourself and don't tell anyone if you want to be saved. We need to activate many types of protection from the exchange so we can minimize the chance for the hacker to break our account.

I think that the most popular way of getting scammed is telegram. People are just sending their private keys to unknown users or sending ETH to contribute to a public sale via PM on telegram. This is just silly guys, be careful.

From my point of view if you are in crypto for half a year at least, then you can easily protect yourself from scams. You have enough experience and can select good projects to participate

Even though you are researching the whole idea and the concept, it wouldn't guarantee you to get scammed by the developer whether the developer is scamming you due to the hack on their platform or etc.

Only IEO now gives some minimum guarantee that the project will be implemented or at least will be traded on some exchange.

it is only the IEO in the big exchange that guarantees the development of the project. after all the project will not develop if the developer does not update the best. The IEO is still at risk for me, does not provide any guarantees unless it has only been registered in exchange, that's all.
