I usually evaluate the cryptocurrency through the team, the roadmap, the whitepaper, the idea and the technology they aim for. A strong cryptocurrency that will have teams, roadmap, whitepaper, technology and what they look for in the future will help their cryptocurrency coin to be transparent and avoid being mistaken for a cryptocurrency fraud.

I men that is also not the conclusive proof of the legitimacy but the problem is you have to take at least 50% chance to see where you have inserted your money. If you smell something fishy then try to get out of the project and if it is not possible to do so then you just landed into another 50% where the risk was highest one. That is the way of crypto currency woking and thats all because of greedy people who just wanna cheat on the legit investors and steal their money. Realization possibility of a project is the most important aspect of it becoming the next big thing. If a project fails at delivering something that can be used in the real world, it will fail. Sooner or later, it will. Most of the projects without a realization possibility are shitcoins anyway... Avoiding questionable links or airdrops is also a good idea. Scammers mainly try to get your private key so that they can access your funds and transfer it out.
There is a project that is currently in ICO called CryptoPolice that is trying to actively fight scams by educating the public and keeping track of different kind of scams. Nowadays, scams are everywhere even here in crypto. They are spreading their bad deeds and intentions. But it is our responsible to avoid every scams that we are going to face. We should study and read a lot to know what is legitimate or not. We must be very careful and not to be gullible.If you're referring to how to avoid scams then don't be blinded by that large allocation of tokens in bounties, I am pretty sure that you're hunting one. Are you lazy to read the whitepaper? That could be the 40% of your safety in investing your time in ICOs when you start reading them. There are some sites where ICOs are being rated by such ICOs expert. Do not get so easily triggeredly joined after you saw that 5-star ICO. Those ratings could be a pay out for those raters. I mean it is an option for someone to pay an adviser to conclude their ICO as a good ico, good whitepaper and such. It is upon your knowledge, not someone else on how can these scammy projects get avoided.
