Title: Difference between "finding" and "solving" a block? Post by: maxman190 on January 22, 2014, 06:14:47 AM I've been trying to get my grip on this whole bitcoin thing, people said if you FIND a block you get 25BTC + fee, but people said you need to solve a block in order to get BTC. This is about solo mining, not pool mining. I want to solo mine bitcoin for fun, not for profit. If I do "find" a block, would I need to "solve" it to get the 25BTC?

If you're serious about mining then you will need very expensive equipment and be prepared not to see a return, this is the harsh reality of mining today. I wish you the best of luck though, you can pick up some cheap second hand mining hardware in the auction section.

Who said fun and profitability had anything to do with each other... if you only look for your fun in profitable things then, no offense, but I feel sorry for you...Maxman: if you find/solve a block while solo mining you will get 25BTC, but only with solo mining, I don't think there's a difference in the meaning. Solo mining can take a long time to find a block though, depending on how many hashes you have (and luck etc.), but as you're doing it for fun I don't think solo mining is worth it on a small budget. You could always use p2pool which is as close as you'll get to solo mining with regular enough payouts, so give that a look. I was able to add golang as a proficiency while learning about mining. The cost of my hardware was less than a few credits tuition. While I hope to eventually turn a profit (who wouldn't) there are other advantages to learning and setting up a mining rig right now; chiefly keeping the system from centralizing itself around the major data centers being built just to mine coin and the promotion of diy home, renewable energy innovation & application. Especially when you begin your mining history with a simple CPU. You're watching your machine solving some random functions and getting a little money for that - awesome!
