Title: I did something stupid Paypal/Ebay
Post by: boumalo on January 23, 2014, 12:38:59 PM
I offered 1mBTC and 1cBTC on Ebay for a Paypal payment, I am very afraid the best bidder is a sc.ammer because he registered on Ebay after I posted my sell, there is less than 12h left, how can I avoid giving money to a scamm.er that is probably going to use the chargeback option on Paypal.

I read about not selling bitcoins with Paypal after I posted my adds, it is not a lot of money but it isn't good to give money to spammers because he is going to look for more and scam other people, does someone has an idea what I can do?

You're worried about being scammed for 1mbtc? Just cancel the auction or refuse to sell/send him the coin.

1cBTC, the guy registered on Ebay after I listed my add, it feels scamm.y
I can't cancel the sell because someone bid and there is less than 12hours left

Don't send him the coins, but if he does scam you you've hardly lost anything anyway.

Why you sell btc at ebay ? Why not sell here ?

Thought of a way: Do any of your friends/family have an ebay account? Just outbid them on it and then cancel the auction afterwards.

Why you sell btc at ebay ? Why not sell here ?

He'd probably get scammed here too  ;D

But less risk here as he can see the trust people already trade pp to btc

Hello Boumalo,

Just pay someone you trust to buy the coin(s). Problem solved.

In your position, I would write it off as a loss. It's less than $10, and not worth the time to chase after.

Add, your account looks like it is around 6 years old with no history, so I wouldn't be too worried about negative feedback. At this stage of the game you're either cutting your losses, trusting a stranger, or contacting someone you know to try and buy it out.

Good Luck,
 HJ

Are you already calculate the price he sell at ebay ? He sell 7 euro. 10mBtc much lower than that price

Hi Blue. I'm actually very new to this whole thing. I was actually considering bidding on Boumalo's auction to help him, but then I checked the rates, and 0.01BTC is trading at about 6.097 EUR average - yet the eBay bid is at 7 EUR (unless I misread something).

This is the site I used to calculate the aggregate rates: http://preev.com/btc/eur

If I made some mistake, please tell me, but as I see the math, it looks correct to me.

1 BTC = 610 EUR
0.1 BTC = 61 EUR
0.01 BTC = 6.1 EUR

From what I see, if I purchased the 0.01 BTC, the bid eBay requires me to place is 7.5 EUR. So I would lose 1.4 EUR - plus the consideration of my time.

That what I tell you. He sell very expensive even for 0.01 BTC. The price should be lower than that. That was the price for bid, not direct buy

Ok, I understand now :)

I wrote in my original post that an eBay account of 6 years age with no history was also equally suspicious as a scam, and that posting here might just be a way to get someone to 'help' him out by buying his BTC. Then I deleted it - mostly because I did not want to start a flame war or insult someone who might have made a genuine mistake. At least publicly, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks for adding to the topic and making sure I understood. It is much appreciated :)

People pay a premium price for coins on ebay, so paying a Euro or two extra is still pretty cheap.

Cancel his bid using this form:
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?CancelBidShow&guest=1

Then block him from bidding again:
http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BidderBlockLogin

I don't think you can cancel bids when there's only a few hours left.

I thought of asking a friend to outbid, I may call one in a minute to ask him. I am monitoring the transaction and if a trusted buyer outbids the alleged scammer I will close the bidding to sell to the alleged trusted buyer

I think that there is a small chance that the guy didn't plan to scam but it is small considering he just registered after I posted my add. I don't have any feedback on ebay but I would like to be able to sell stuff on ebay later, I have my two antminers that I need to sell soon so it isn't very nice to start with a negative feedback  ;)

If someone from here buys at 7.50€ or more I will send 0.011

I'm not 100% but I think it's possible.

OP, did you try this?

I can stop the bid but the best bidder will win the bidding and I will have to sell to him or get a negative feedback

You haven't got any feedback anyway. Just create a new account if you get neg-bombed.

You can cancel a bid. I did it once but do not remember how it was done. You are free to sell to who you want to sell, or not to sell.

There's a time-limit on to cancel bids. Once the auction gets close to finishing you can't cancel them.

Yes you can cancel up to 12h but someone has bid you can only stop the bid and sell to him.

I have a friend who is signing up on his mobile phone at the moment and will bid if he is fast enough

Thanks for your help, I am not too stressed by this since we are talking about 1cBTC but it is never nice to be scammed

A friend of mine bid at the very last minute so I will probably never know if the alleged scammer was going to scam; my friend is willing to keep the BTC, it will be his very first BTC, maybe it will get him interested in BTC, he has quite a lot of gold so he is interested in sound money.

I think I will send him 0.011 to be fair, he has no idea of the price but I explained the bid has a huge premium
