This is nothing new, the Quatro line of cards have been used by the likes of Pixar, oil companies, scientific research and Medical MRI Scanner for a few years now. They even have a specialied PCI-E interface card that allows multiple systems to all processes the same information (Think of it as SLI across tens of systems).

And using GPU's for supercomputing isn't anything new either and AMD have done it for a long time.

CUDA has a very similar feel to C programming, so it's been widely adopted by programmers world wide. I can see Nvidia quickly racing into the lead if they could refine their manufacturing processes more and bring down the price. Power consumption is still very high, with the GTX580 (Tri-SLI) using 40% more power than dual 6990's with only a 10% higher performance rate (On current drivers). This extra power is also generating a lot of heat, and when your running thousands of cards in a data centre, even 3c lower average temps can be a deciding factor.
