Title: Windows 7 has KILLED my mining rig - MUCH help needed
Post by: ibrahim11 on January 26, 2014, 07:53:48 PM
Hi, I am running a MSI 280x and a Sapphire 7950 and whenever i turn my rig on it freezes. So i took out my 7950 and it works again. I put my 7950 in another slot and it froze again!?!?!

UPDATE: I turned on the rig when i put the 7950 in another slot and it didn't freeze. Windows said.... installing driver software. Like the thing that happens when you put a new usb stick in etc

After it installed the drivers, the rig crashed. So currently i am running just a MSI 280x.

How can I fix this? My rig crashes on startup when my 7950 is in. It was working fine 2 days ago with both gpu's. So to put a long story short... windows crappy driver updates makes my rig freeze every time i put my 7950 in. Should I re-install catalyst?

I CAN access safe mode with both gpu's inserted

Freezes where? If it does on windows loading screen than start in safe mode and see which file it fails to load (it will be the file after the last one shown - so just google "windows freeze after loading xyz file").

Freezes on desktop. Black background... nothing comes up ... no icons

Can you get to task manager via CTRL ALT DEL. If so try "file" then "new task". Type in explorer.exe. See if anything comes up that way.

If that does not work I would uninstall ALL AMD software.  Reboot. Then reinstall AMD software.

I cannot run task manager. I will uninstall in safe mode

NEVER let Windoze update your hardware drivers.

Can you do a system restore?

Do you have another video card to use? Onboard video? If so, use that for now.

Try this - http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=379461

I thought there was an ATI driver uninstall utility but I can't find it.

A quick search on G makes me think it would be easier to re-image.

I managed to uninstall and remove everything AMD.  I reinstalled catalyst 12.8 and SDK 2.7

However, when I run cgminer it instantly crashes. Windows says "cgminer has stopped working properly"

Start fresh - there are other ways but if you cant pintpoint the problem it will take longer than just starting from the beginning

Was this rig ever working at max hash rate with both cards?

I reinstalled catalyst 12.8 and SDK 2.7

There's your first issue.

Cat 12.8 and r9 280's don't mix well.

Save yourself a lot of headache.

1) Wipeout and reinstall Windows
2) Update and shut off all updates
3) After updates install Cat 13.9
4) Use cgminer 3.6.6 - 3.7.2

I have have a lot 7950's and 280's running exactly like this, problem free.

Trust me, you can't fix Windows after a messed up AMD Cat install.

Wipe and move on.

I re-installed windows and then installed catalyst 13.9. After installing catalyst 13.9 the screen went black. So I shut off the rig and took out the 7950. Now it works. Why won't it work with the 7950? I don't get it. It was working with both gpu's 3 days ago.

Well, the card may be defective ...

3 dead cards out of 14 Sapphire 7950: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=434091.0

Did you undervolt the cards?

If it won't boot or display at all being the only card in the machine,

It's dead.

7950's and 280's work well together when configured properly.

I took out the 280x and replaced it with the 7950. It booted and displayed fine. Then windows installed its own crappy drivers for it even though i turned automatic updates off! And now it doesn't display when its the only card inserted, but the fans spin.

Its ironic that you posted this today I just got finished setting up 2 7950's and a RADEON R9 290X mining rig on WIN 7 for a DOGEcoin mining project.
The 290X was giving me fits until I set up the second 7950 with a powered riser and the 290 X on the last slot on the end then it worked.
So I setup one 7950. Then setup the second 7950 with a powered riser. Then setup the RADEON R9 on the last slot on the end directly connected.
Hope this helps you.

I disabled my 7950 in device manager and now windows boots fine. Can't i install catalyst 12.8 in another folder and in device manager click update driver and point it to that folder with cat 12.8 instead of using 13.9
