Title: POLL: Bitcoin related services
Post by: agorist on March 10, 2011, 05:04:18 AM
What would you consider useful in a bitcoin economy? What kind of bitcoin-related web service would you likely use?

Vote in the poll and post your ideas right here!

An options market would be nice. That could be provided directly or with a rep system.

I'd like to see a reputation system, and would probably be willing to implement it/host it/run it for free, if i could figure out the best way for it to work (help?)

Couldn't that be hooked up to the bitcoin-otc trust db?

The problem with otc imo is the IRC stuff. It took me several attempts to get a cloak and register a password and then I lost it and in a few attempts I still haven't been able to get it reset. I'm sure it works for some people, but you aren't going to get a majority of normal people to beg IRC mods for stuff all the time.

It'd be excellent if it had a user interface for non-technical merchants to buy put options.  For instance, a merchant enters a date in the future.  It gives him a guaranteed exchange rate for that date and payment instructions for buying the option.  He can then quote this exchange rate on his site and unload the coins for USD when the date arrives.

Currently, exchange rate volatility risk is hard for merchants to swallow.  I suspect that many merchants won't pay a developer to automatically sell Bitcoins on one of the major exchanges after each transaction.  They'll want to accumulate coins throughout the month and sell them at a fixed price in one large transaction.

Anything wrong with Gavin's ClearCoin (https://clearcoin.appspot.com/)?

None of this is bitcoin-specific.

A Website/Service providing same Features like the client of bitcoin, but
 - does not need any extra incoming ports open,
 - does not need Java or Flash
 - no need to trust the service (they do not have your private key(s))

described here: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4260.0 (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4260.0)

MyBitcoin seems to be getting worse at doing their service... I guess we're going to need a new/better merchant/payment service.

I've not used biddingpond, so the answer may be obvious, but what's missing from it with respect to ebay (except for PayPal and apparent world domination, obviously!)
