Title: What to do with .25BTC
Post by: wolfslayer on January 28, 2014, 03:25:28 PM
So a friend gave me .25btc on a paper wallet for my birthday and instructed me to check out these forums. What seems like the strongest candidate to invest these into?

If you are going to want to use them, it will be beneficially to get them to a real wallet client, as spending partial amounts of a paper wallets is a dangerous thing. I recommend you (figure out) import them into a wallet. Send some and play with a small amount - learn about transaction fees. And (I personally) would trade with them, if you're into that sorta thing.

0.25 BTC?  That can be exchanged for nearly $200 today.

You can also just hang on to them and hope that the exchange rate between your local currency and bitcoins continues to improve so that the 0.25 bitcoins can be exchanged for even more of your local currency in the future.

You can also spend those 0.25 bitcoins directly at places that accept bitcoins for payment (such as outpost.com, tigerdirect.com, The D Casino in Las Vegas, etc)

Hold them till 1 BTC = 10K USD ...just wait till end of 2015 and then sell them. In the mean time play with some free faucets to make some more money. People will say they are dust. But they'll turn into gold dust when 1 BTC reaches 10K USD. Here is my recommended faucet => www.CoinLearn.org (http://www.CoinLearn.org)

Mod note: no referal spam

What I would do is add another .10 or wait until bitcoin is at 900-1000 and

then buy a 4 or 5 GH/s bifuryminer from cryptostore.io

or like the others are saying hold

I'd just keep hold of them. You'll probably get scammed on here and end up with nothing  lol.

It's only worth around $200 so I'd say just store them in a secure wallet and hang on to them unless you really need to cash them in. Or you could trade them for other alt coins?

I'd hang on to them though.
Imagine if BTC goes up to $10,000 one day in the future you'll be able to cash out at $2500.
If it goes up to $100,000 that .25 will be worth around $25,000!

These are lofty expectations and may never happen but having that little bit stashed away in hopes they come true would be fun for you. And worst case scenario it's only $200 so it's not a giant loss if it amounts to nothing.

There are several online stores that accept bitcoin. You can spend it at overstock.com and tigerdirect.com, among others.

Probably best to hold or you could risk investing into a new alt currency.

This is true. If you move the money from a paper wallet do it all at once. Because when you partially send money to another address the rest is moved to a change address which you don't control the keys of. Also when you enter the private key on a networked client you should regard it as compromised.

Use Electrum or Amory with an offline computer (that has never been on the internet). That's the safest way to use Bitcoins. If you don't have a second computer available (and don't want to buy one, like a netbook, for that purpose) use a Linux LiveCD to access your coins.

I would hold onto them. Worth $200 today but could be worth $2000 in a year.  Protect your private key on your paper wallet.  It is equal to the keys to a bank vault.

DO read up on Bitcoin. There is lots to learn and these forums is a great place to do your research.

- Hold (best in a safe wallet, or even don't redeem the paper one)
- Invest into some altcoin (insanely risky, but might net you insane profits)
- Invest into just-dice or other gambling site (almost guaranteed, albeit small profit)

Thanks for all the replies I think I have decided to hold half of it and invest the other half into an altcoin

Holding onto it is the best option, though what woudl be more fun is the deposit the BTC to a gambling website and bet on sports, casino games!
There are tons of great sporting websites out there where you could potentially grow your coins!

I would advise you keep your bitcoins secured and get a bit involved in the bitcoin community, if you are buying something online and you see that it is easier to pay in bitcoins, use those coins and buy them back
Your coins can be exchanged anywhere in the world and you can buy with them on numerous websites without having to worry about credit card theft so enjoy these possibilities.

To get new coins : rent your [Suspicious link removed]ignature, sell stuff in bitcoins, buy them on localbitcoins or get verified on an exchange, ect.

Yup, I think since this is your first time with Bitcoins you should at least spend a little time learning more about them... Plus there is a good price fluctuation right now so you may want to hold it for now..

I am a firm believer of spend some, save some.

Yesterday I quoted exactly like that in this very thread but a mod deleted it :(

But yeah, I agree that holding/hodling until further mainstream adoption is good idea.
