Title: GPU OR Mining machine
Post by: shafi alam on May 31, 2018, 08:11:30 AM
I'm a newbie in mining working world. Which mining system is more profitable??
Mining rig or Mining machine like antminer.
Which is better??

Prons & Cons of both system.
ASICs are more profitable but riser is higher on these devices.

You should check out this topic below from bitcointalk.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2317688.0

If you are new to mining then i would suggest you should start with GPU and after you get ROI then go for ASIC.

Antminer:
- Low power consumption
- easy to run mining (plug & play)
- more money saving
- When no longer profitable, this device is only a wall decoration
- the decrease of resale value

Mining Rig:
- Power consumption depends on GPU type and series
- hardware prices are more expensive when compared to Antminer
- can be used to play games if it is not profitable (mining)
- good resale value compared to Antminer

They are both profitable to mine, but asic ( algorithm specific) can mine only one algorithm, meaning you cant switch bitcoin asic to Ether, and mine them. With GPUs you can switch them to any algorithm and mine all coins, but you will not be profitable on coins which have asics developed for them. Also asics are upgraded all the time and then your old asic is not worth as much. I prefer GPUs, but it is me, somebody likes asic better

I just checked the bitmain site...

have these devices dropped a lot in price?

Overhere (Belgium) a MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming 11G currently costs 1,209 EUR = 1,417.17USD

Seems to be that a gpu rig with a couple of GPUs is way more expensice than these ASICs.

Why would you still opt for the GPUs when you just look at the price (and ROI would be a lot longer?) or am I missing something?

your analysis is correct about price comparison for now if want to buy between mining rig or ASIC but if talking about long-term mining and after the device is no longer profitable for sure mining rig (GPUs) is the first choice to consider.

Why would you still opt for the GPUs when you just look at the price (and ROI would be a lot longer?) or am I missing something?
Personally, I still choose a mining rig for the above reasons

If you are a new to Mining platform you must check your country electricity cost because many countries are not supporting and if you starting know you must check the hash rate of graphics card because high hash rate cards make more profit and you should buy 19 slots supporting processor or more than that. If you follow my instruction you will earn more profit in this platform.

Sorry to be harsh but : google.com
I dont think you made the minimal time investment in research

I think it depends on what is cheaper, if you can buy a cheaper GPU then you can make more profit in GPU mining than ASIC mining but if you can buy cheaper ASIC I think you can make more profit on mining with ASIC miner.

So for me as of now what I see both of them are profitable but depends on the price you bought the product.
You can try to use some calculator that includes hardware cost like http://whattomine.com/ then put the hardware cost and how much you can make a profit.

I always prefer buying GPUs for mining. ASICs (like antminers) are improving at a very fast rate, and become inefficient after a few months of mining due to a better version coming out, and then, being the older version, it's sold for a very low price. However, if you talk about selling GPUs, then gamers are always ready to buy them at a good price.

As lots of other members mentioned mining machines are good in begining but their residuals are very low to nil compare to GPUs, should take that into consideration

Mining profitability has decreased all over the board, and GPUs are starting to become threatened by FPGAs, but I would still recommend buying a GPU over any ASICs- they’re almost 99% of the time quieter than ASICs (some, like the Antminer series, comparable to vacuum cleaners in noise), and you’re more flexible with mining as you can hash more than just one algo.

Bitmain miner prices have dropped, but keep in mind the difficulty on most Bitmain-mined chains have also nearly doubled or more in just a few months.

I would say it's too late to get into mining right now especially if you still don't know much about the mining process and configuring miners.

However, if you really want to get into it i would first invest in a simple GPU rig. Investing in GPUs has less risks involved because GPUs will always have value because they can easily repurposed for multiple other tasks (gamers, data scientists, etc). Also, GPUs will always have the potential to mine new and obscure algorithms.

It really doesnt take a whole lot of knowledge to start a simple rig. The mining process isn't incredibly diffcult to understand, and the same goes for configuring miners- with Google, the whole internet, and this part of the forums to work with, you can easily learn about configuration and almost anything about mining in a few days or even less. Hell if you're really lazy, you can just download one-click software and mine with Nicehash, etc, and you hardly need to know anything except getting a rig to boot and/or GPU modding and tweaking.

The big thing that is threatening GPU mining right now is FPGAs, ASICs and a depression in overall coin prices and rising difficulty- this is bringing the break-even time of many cards to near one year or more at $0.10/kWh electrical costs.

I completely agree with you, but based on whats being asked here on the forums, it seems really difficult for some to know how to even get started. I myself started with NiceHash and simply downloaded the miner and pressed "start." It's all about google search after that.

Don't forget the risk of new NVIDIA GPUs and that ETH is getting closer to switching from POW to POS. Really a bad time to get into mining still.

I am a fan of GPU mining computers. They can be made with a few tweaks to consume less power than Antminers like the S9 which mine only bitcoin, after a BIOS modification and some tweaking to undervolt the RX cards you can achieve a six GPU mining computer with only about 700 watt consumption or a bit more at wall compared to the S9 which is 1350 watt, so that lower power consumption does not stand at least in my case.

Another reason and this is the main one why I prefer GPU mining computers over ASIC devices is that you have a lot of different coins and options to choose for mining, so you have always a possibility with GPU mining computers because of new coins while the S9 once the difficulty skyrocket which has already done you cannot earn anymore with them.

When you buy antminers from Bitmain, sometimes their shipping sucks, can say the same about return processes.
Personally I would choose GPU but it depends on coin also. As you see, lately bitmain tries it's best to crack algorithms and they made asic miner for ethereum, litecoin and etc.
But overally, GPU is more workable, it can't be damaged as easily as asic, you can sell them at reasonable price and upgrade your GPU's + increase hashrate.

First we should know how much you are affordable to invest for mining rig bro. If you go to ASIC yes you could make more money than GPU and but you cannot mine all the coins with the ASIC machines. Only you can mine the coins with the dedicated coins only.
If you choose the profitable algorithm at the moment you can get the decent profit from the GPU too bro. You should add the rx 580 or higher version to get the good income.

Before you make an investment and buy either one, I would suggest taking a look at my CPU mining thread here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2891680.0). It will teach you a lot about mining and you will be able to make you own assessments after it.

I see a lot of people making investments blindly and losing money on stuff that they don't understand yet. Better avoid doing that, right?

To avoid being off topic here, I would suggest going for GPUs since ASICs (aka "mining machines") are usually rendered obsolete by coin owners that do not want their coin to be mined too fast thus creating a fast devaluation of the coin.

I joined a group on facebook where the group members suggested me to mine with a GPU and those guys who bought an ant-miner regretted to why they bought an expensive mining machine which its not much profitable as having a high-end GPU which you can also use in other stuff like gaming or programming if you are into computers. I myself would prefer to mine with GPU because as I said it can be multi-use than having an antminer.

So asic mining is more profitable than gpu mining.  But not for long time.
if I bought a asic mining machine to mine btc how many days I can use it??
somebody said its not for long time mining.

yeah, as long as the ASIC hash rate is still relevant to Bitcoin difficulties and can still be profitable.
