Title: What was the dumbest thing you did for love?
Post by: oprahwindfury on January 29, 2014, 07:48:10 AM
While daydreaming on the job, I was thinking about why I had gone to such great lengths to impress girls in college. One of my more memorable accounts was when I was a freshman. I had this girl in my intro to bio class, her name was Stacy. Stacy had a giant rack and a really nice bottom. The kind that makes you do a double take if she were to bike past you. I was really into Stacy but we weren't really going anywhere with me being stuck in the friend zone. I had her facebook, so I began cyber stalking her profile. Everywhere she went, every picture she took--I had a vicarious memory of. I'd imagine I was there with her and feel happy for a moment in time.

So anyway, while I was creeping her to the max I jogged down what she liked to do, her favorite bands, restaurants, etc. I thought that the more things we had in common the better the chances of me popping the "date" question. Needless to say she felt kinda uncomfortable that I was mentioning all her favorite things all the time and we eventually stopped talking altogether. Freshman desperation, don't do it.

lol I've given up trying to impress women, if they want me they can come and get me, there's no point chasing the ones who just aren't interested in you because they'll easily brush you off if they find someone better because they can even if you somehow manage to be their boyfriend for awhile, I've seen it happen dozens of times.

And that is why you are single! :D
No, but seriously, if you don't try and risk anything you won't win anything either. I thought like you did for a few years, then I changed my mind. Had a girlfriend after a week! :D

Or they're really men? haha. Get on a train or a plane if you're desperate. Women won't flock to you. Unless you've got money  ;D.

I find it interesting how you're basically stalking me on any thread where I mention my personal life so stop trying to troll, oh wait, I don't need to argue with you, I have an ignore button here.

Listen up, kids. Don't ever have sex or do anything with the goal of sex where you think it'd be a good idea to wear a condom. Once you have sex that doesn't feel like a handjob from a pissed off gorilla, you'll realize why so many people support abstinence and conservative relationships. Getting any type of STD is basically a sexual death sentence unless you move to Atlanta where everyone's already infected.

(I think that's good enough to include in The Talk. Second opinion?)

I find it interesting how you're so paranoid and self-important that you think I'm stalking you. You really do love that ignore button and publicly telling people about it. You seem to ignore anybody who says something you don't like or when you can't back up your points with a coherent argument, so instead you use the ignore button or cry about being trolled as a defence mechanism and a cop-out.

Dumbest thing I've probably done was to bring my (now ex) girlfriend on a trip even though I knew the relationship was pretty much over. I thought it might help in saving things but all it ended up doing was costing me a lot of money. Less than a month later, we were broken up and I was a bit less rich.

You live and learn!

I knew a couple who had booked a holiday together but kinda split up a month or so before the trip but went on it anyway. It didn't turn out very well. The two week holiday pretty much turned into seeing who could sleep with the most people haha. The situation would probably make a pretty funny film  ;D.

That's horrible... I would've tried to bargain and get her to sell me her ticket so I could bring another date or even a mate instead.

I feel bad for him! Unless he got some nice tail there.

I don't think tickets can be changed that quickly or easily, can they? They tried to patch things up before they went but obviously it just wasn't working. And I can't comment on the quality of shags they got, but they both had a lousy time. They still pretty much slept in the same bed at the end of the night and you can only imagine the awkwardness and animosity that caused, especially when one pulled and the other didn't haha. I would've just gone on the holiday and just paid for my own room and done my own things.

Once I bought tickets to a concert that the girl I had a crush on (she seemed to be into me aswell!) loved. Well, we went there had an amazing night togheter, and I really thought this was going to be something. The next day she got a new boyfriend. To bad it wasn't me... :-\

I invited a girl I liked to spend holidays at my place and to make a good impression taking her out almost every day. The only thing she paid for was a train ticket and I ended up spending half of my life savings in 1 month (equivalent of 6 months wage). I later found out she was happy to visit me anyway and would be even if we just ordered food instead of going out and stuff. Anyway, we had fun so I don't regret it.

Believe it or not, keeping it real impresses a woman more than trying to impress her :)  This won't be the dumbest thing you'll ever do for love, though! hehe

Don't you guys have female friends to give you tips and such?

Keeping it real impresses some girls not all girls some would rather a fairy tale.

Wow... that sounds pathetic as hell.. lol

But everyone goes through it, there's always that girl or girls in your life that help you transform into a man.

The dumbest thing I ever did for love was trying to make it work when it was clear it wasn't going to work. Don't do it, otherwise you're gonna get a place together, be psuedo-happy for a while (cause it's new and everything) but then be pretty unhappy for a while. Then you'll drift apart while still trying to force it to work, and then bam! You'll have to sort through all the crap in the apartment, wait for your ex to move out and move into your ex-best friend's place (because they're shagging now), and somehow figure out how the hell you're going to make the payments on your place by yourself.

Like I said, don't force things if it's clear it isn't gonna work.

Thank goodness I get enough supplementary income from mining...

[Edit:] Forgot to include all the stuff about mental anguish, regrets, break downs at work, sleepless nights, needing to see a counselor, thinking about your psychologists recommendation to take medication, animosity all over, and never seeing a person you care deeply about ever again.

Indeed - but those wanting that fairy tale aren't your keepers, at least not until they're ready to settle.

Think of that fairy tale chick as an extended one night stand ;)

Wait a minute... I'm giving love tips now?!? First I'm ragging on casinos, giving hardware advice, debating about laws and shit... Jesus. Somebody please find me a thread to troll! lol

I have female friends but all they do is feed me that "I'm sure you'll find someone" crap, I think the best moment I ever had was when my Jewellery teacher had the radio on and this radio host was chatting to a girl about someone she dated and she had about 6 boyfriends previously despite being really young which totally describes the situation I'm in. That's the kind of shit I have to deal with here in the UK lol, I swear it's this country and not me that's the problem, the big thing I need right now is money so I can leave and find girls outside which I'm working on right now :P.

Hmh, I don't know about dumbest thing, but I did try texting a girl once and that backfired very badly, in fact, because it was text I actually posted the conversation to a friend and even she went "wtf" over the reaction to me trying to ask her out, sometimes I've asked girls I know wtf was going on and nope, just turns out I'm really unlucky and the girls I've tried for are batshit insane lol.

It was a spur of the moment thing and I instantly regretted it. She was just telling me about herself and when she told me she was a vegan I stupidly blurted out "me too" lol. Had to keep it up for months. Bad times.

If you want a proper relationship yeah, keep it real - if you want a quick fling or affair (in which case I wouldn't say it's "for love", but "for sex" - these are related but different) then sure, go the "impress the ladies" route.

For myself i've only ever had luck in the love life with girls who started as good friends.

Best tip of all:
Stop treating women as a mysterious entity that you need to hack, it'll make you more relaxed and you'll find it easier to talk.

I approve (especially since it's a How I Met Your Mother reference)! In theory, one day we all find someone, that for us, is above that line. Or we die miserable and lonely (or awesomely happy depending on your perspective).

I think that when you're in love, sometimes there is no thought process. At least it feels accurate in my case.

One of my exes... I honestly have no clue why I got with her and why it even lasted a year and a half. Truly a horrible and crazy (not just regular lady crazy) person.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Seriously.

The thing I posted up earlier is actually a true story for me. I tried making it work, but it didn't. Sometimes I feel like I got the short end of the stick though. Really wished it was over before we got a place together and I bought a ring and put down money for our future and stuff. Sometimes we humans are so ridiculous.

I feel you. I could've done so much more with my time had it not been for that particular ex. I even ended up house sitting her shitty apartment (complete with two cats; I hate cats) while she was off fucking some other dude on a film set for a month. I'm generalizing, but it's all truth.

Though now I'm happy! With the woman of my dreams, she's crazy about me but not crazy on her own. Pretty great!

When we were both drunk I was trying to light her sig and put her gorgeous hair on fire. Loved her like mad.

Did she dump you after you tried to combust her?

Moved to a another country I disliked for 2 years.

Dang. What country? And why? What was the thought process behind that?

Damn, sounds like she was a porn star :D
I read a story in the news of a guy who went abroad to work for a year and left his wife to take care of their kids. He earned a lot and decided that he'll send her the money and she'll start with building the house so no time is wasted. She was sending him back tpictures of the land she bought and the house being built so he continued to send the money. When he finally came back, found out she already filed divorce papers and was screwing another guy while he was gone. The house and land were fake and she just spent the it all with her lover.

Glad to hear that! I know that sometimes we have to face adversity first and stumble a bunch before we find our greatest story. Always glad to hear of times when in the end it's great. It just sucks for me because I wanted to believe that I had already found it. Oh well.

I'm still fairly raw with my issue (she's still yet to move all of her stuff out, but I gave her an ultimatum of two more weeks to get all her stuff out) so it's focus on me time! I've cut her and my former "best friend" out of my life and doing things that make me happy. I hope it ends up well for me too in the end!

Definitely not a porn star. The worst part is that the sex actually sucked... Whenever it actually DID happen.

Horrible story... :(

Well, the story is far from over and plenty can happen, but the past 2 years or so have been bliss. No fighting, just mini arguments and quick compromises.

Focusing on you is definitely the best thing to do right now. If you can afford out, get out there and do shit you've never done. Do them alone. Go on an adventure that scares you. Self-discovery is most rewarding when we're alone and kicking ass.

Spend all my money and time for nothing. What I got is depression.

Definitely! I am planning on finally travelling once I can square away my finances and find a second person to split my place with. I'll probably cash out some of the investments that I have, and go from there.

I hope things go well for you! If the last two years have been bliss for you, you may have found your greatest story (and a great story is always worth keeping)!

Not to be overly philosophic and stuff, but it might not be for nothing if you end up on the other side, stronger, better and more awesome than you had even been before.

I hope that you got to that light at the end of the tunnel, because I'm still in that place trying to get to that light. Although, I know I'm closer with each day that goes by!

I definitely hope so! We've got a big hurdle up ahead (semi-long distance as I might be in London while she'll be in Paris for a year) but if that simply comes and goes, then we'll definitely be set for longterm afterwards... At least that's the plan!

Good luck!
