Title: Charity
Post by: rebuilder on March 12, 2011, 12:16:10 AM
As I'm sure pretty much everyone knows, shit has really hit the fan with the earthquake and Tsunamis in Japan. Is there a charity organisation that might be persuaded to accept donations in Bitcoin? Japan currently seems to have been the hardest hit by the disaster, but it's of course possible some other areas in the Pacific will need aid more.

I hope it's not too cynical to think this, but perhaps there's an opportunity to both help some people out and to gain some positive publicity for Bitcoin here. Everything is still very much up in the air, but I'll try to look into this as soon as things clear up a bit.

Good call. It's this sort of thing that bitcoins are best suited for. Great chance to show off their robustness as well as the quality of the bitcoin community.

Let us know if you come up with anything. I would definitely donate a few BTC for that cause.

maybe it could be useful for setting up a voip network in the disaster effected areas and get a deal with a company who accepts bitcoins like for instance link2voip?

i have seen that the tokyo hacker space is planning in helping to set up some voip services...

oh, guess i missed the initial response of the bitcoin community:

after reading this blog i think, there is still a lot that could be done...

apparently the tokyo hackerspace mentioned on that blog asks for more help too:

now my question:

would it be a good idea to ask them to accept bitcoins donations in order to set up voip services and get some other electronic goods
--> buying from traders who accept btc?

here's their wanted items list:

thanks

Bitcoin for charity? I guess it is really good to help others than others will help you. I agree that bitcoin and charity because bitcoin is really useful in every disaster that our country will encountered and encounter soon. Bitcoin really a good help for everyone , I too really wanted them to help, just like what bitcoin did for other people.
