Title: Sign a Staked BTC Address - Get a Merit
Post by: eddie13 on June 01, 2018, 03:54:12 AM
Sign a BTC address that you posted/staked more than 50% the age of your account ago and get 1 merit..
Sign a message with your username and today's date in it, and include a link to the old post containing the address with your post..
Offer available to Member-Hero only while supplies last.. I will merit atleast the first 10 qualified candidates and more if I like the way it goes..

Can't? Better get it done (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0)..

It is wise to be able to prove your identity cryptographically through Bitcoin..
If you account gets hacked you can easily use it to report the hack and get the account flagged.. In order to maybe get your account back you will have to be able to sign a staked BTC address as well..
If, by chance, someone thinks your account is hacked, by signing you can prove that it is not..
If you do lose your account, you can use your staked address it to maintain your identity, prove who you are, and keep your reputation/trust..
If you ever want a loan a staked address could be very handy..
You can prove your identity on other sites and platforms such as telegram..
If you ever do a deal that requires trust you should be able to sign your identity at the request of the other party to prove you are not hacked, or prove you are who you claim to be..
At times it can also be good to sign contracts or deals with your identity so it can be proved you agreed to it..

I think staking your identity is an important part of your reputation and being a crypto community member so if you made that step towards membership you can have a merit for it..

Not worth the effort to find my legacy addy private key, import it on my wallet just to sign a message for 1 merit. you have no idea how hard it was to sign the above message. besides I am not going to use legacy addresses anymore. segwit from now on. ;)

Not too difficult considering I keep the wallet available just in case I have to verify my identity.

Ah, yes. I scrounge around for merit pitifully because I need to rank up. Where would I be without my precious merits? :'(

(I don't see how I'm whoring out for merits that I won't get. You should at least take some time to prove your identity ;))
We should do this with PGP, in my opinion. It's good to get people to start encrypting their messages, no?

Sign a BTC address that you posted/staked more than 50% the age of your account ago and get 1 merit..
An interesting exercise...

I was sure I had done this before in Tomatocage's original "Stake your address" thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0)... and after some hunting, I found it (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.msg22068671#msg22068671)... but I don't think it satisfies the 50% age criteria. :P

So, I guess I would need to use this one:

I agree it would be a good thing to get people to learn how to encrypt messages..
I have played around with it just to learn how to do it and make sure I can if I need to for some reason but I don't really have a staked PGP public key..

ps. eddie13... where is YOUR staked address? ;)

I just got out my old laptop but can't find my charger right this moment due to my girl sleeping in the room it is somewhere in..
It's late, I'll drag it out tomorrow..

All verified btw..

It's because you have used a bech32 SegWit address to sign the message. Apparently there isn't an "agreed" method for using bech32 addresses to sign messages. I believe that the Electrum dev(s) have put out a proposal for the method they're currently using... but as far as I'm aware, no one else is using it. So, it'll work for Electrum, but nothing else.

1.When will you learn ? Like the first thing a person learns about bitcoin is creating their own wallets.Move the coins from your exchange wallet to something like Electrum or blockchain.info soon as you can.

2.Read the damn thread, the offer is for accounts with rank Member +..

3.You have disappointed me as a bitcoiner and a bitcointalk member at the same time.Sorry no merit for you.

I think we should be kind to people here, in any case, we should be united as one so that the community can grow and mature together. Besides, people start from being a newbie right?

I was once a newbie who didn't understand the blockchain technology a few years ago, until some user from this forum PMed me the inner workings of the blockchain technology. That 'noob' that you are scolding right now may very well be the next pioneer in blockchain technology.

No, I don't think rank matters for using [ code ] tags... It just looks like your copy/paste didn't work properly or there was an issue with the way the "newline" characters were pasted... I think they might have been converted to spaces ;)

Alegotardo , you can paste your data from Electrum on brainwallet
https://brainwalletx.github.io/#verify

Brainwallet will generate a better presentation. You can verify there too.

And for what is this thread created? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0
And why do you reward people with merit for that? Any idea? Was merit implemented for that? I guess no and can't understand why so many user plays this merit charity game. I think sign isn't needed, only adress is enough too for this moment.

He wrote in the first post why he decided to give merits to users who are able to sign a message. He has a very good reason to do it, after all this is a bitcoin forum.

Honestly, because I had like 100 sMerit and had really been struggling to find posts worthy of merit... Also, I like the idea of people pro-actively staking addresses to help deter account theft. I think it is a positive thing and if everyone did it, I believe it would be a lot easier for people to recover hacked accounts.

I'd actually hoped more "member" and "full member" types would take advantage of this threads so they get the double bonus of staked address and some merit.

No... an address only isn't enough. You need to be able to PROVE that you own/control that address. You do that by signing a message from that address. By signing the message, it is then impossible to change it later, as it will break the signature and invalidate the message.

To stop account buyers from just buying an account including private key to the staked address, it would be good to require funds in the address before considering anyone the real owner.
If the new owner puts 0.1BTC on the staked address, the seller can take his funds. I value a funded staked address more than an unfunded one.
(disclaimer: my own staked address isn't funded)

The problem with that is my staked address is from a 2013 wallet which I have possibly compromised by claiming all the forked coins from. I don't think it's a practical requirement.

My staked addy got compromised when I copied the private key into Google :(
But indeed, I didn't think about Forkcoins when writing this. Even so, I trust a funded staked address more than an unfunded address.

My opinion is that whatever ever you do, staked addresses can't be effective against account sales. They are effective with hacked accounts though. The age of the staked address is far more important than it being funded particularly with accounts older than the 2015 hack.

Example https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.msg39496681#msg39496681

2013 account stakes an address 2 days ago. A quick look at its posts and it used to post only in Chinese until going to sleep in 2014. Then it wakes up in 2017 and only posts in English.

Accounts that were farmed and sold post 2015 could well have been sold with an email address and private key by the more sophisticated account farmers. Merit is the way that business has been stopped.

I know that I'm not eligible to get Merit because my address was staked only in 2017. But I just want to say how important to have staked address. It already helped to recover my account when it was hacked: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2419748.msg24763320#msg24763320. Without my staked address I wouldn't be there today.

I need to go backwards to find this address because I changed it few times, but I keep all private keys just in case I need them one day. It take few months after registration to even notice that sign address is important to prove the ownership over the forum account.
