Title: Are you talking to merchants about Bitcoin?
Post by: HabBear on June 05, 2018, 02:49:42 AM
Are you talking to your local merchants about Bitcoin?

Today I was buying a coffee at a local shop, cost $2.75. I hand over a card and the gal says, "sorry, do you have cash? We have a $5 minimum for cards...you know...fees." I said, "I only have $2." And the gal replied, that's fine.

So as they're pouring their finest for me I ask "Do you guys accept bitcoin?" And the gal says, "No, do people use that now?" Another gal walks up, "is that a thing?"

Best words I've heard all week. Of course, I come back with - "Yeah! It's a thing! It's great to use, you know...low fees." Then this gal mentions "some documentary about Bitcoin on Netflix, I guess I should watch it." I left them with, "It's called Banking on Bitcoin, check it out."

My point with all this extremely riveting dialogue ( :P) is that a simple question like "Do you accept Bitcoin?" turned into a full on conversation. The more each of talks about Bitcoin, the more we start to raise the local awareness, interest, and eventually adoption...the rest takes care of itself!

Bitcoin is not legel in many countries and still lots of people all over the world don't know about bitcoin. They have detrimental thoughts about bitcoin but they have no idea about it's benefits. Day by day Bitcoin is become familiar to whole world and people are started to know about bitcoin. So most of the merchants have no idea about bitcoin yet.

I'll try this to the nearest coffee shop and even to an internet cafe that I mostly spend time staying.

Very encouraging, thanks for sharing your experience this can really raise awareness to our locality.

Aside from the household stores over here being run by people who are not vast with the current technological advancement in the world, every other medium and large business chains or super markets have heard about bitcoin and what is stopping them is not because they won't consider it when given the opportunity, but they legal parameters is what is keeping all of them back which means even if I talk about it anytime I visit the store, its does not change anything except its coming from an authority authorised to make such pronouncement.

Few years ago when there was first deployment of POS to  businesses, it seems like it was not going to work for the business that were ready to do a test run couple with other several issues that came up, a lot of people refused to accept it even when it was for free but the moment the CBN gave a regulatory policy on that and how to reconcile, every business now wants to get one at a cost at that.

Good for you.

Though we have a reputable wallet exchange here in our country(pretty much like Coinbase), bitcoin is mostly seen as a investment scheme here. Ponzi schemes are everywhere here in Asia, so yeah, so is "bitcoin investment" schemes, unfortunately. A poor country with lots of poor people, hence a hotspot for these types of schemes.

The concept of bitcoin and crypto currency is new to many people. Even many people didn't heard about it. But, the popularity is increasing. I hope it would widely spread all over the world very soon.

Interesting! I too tried to have a talk on bitcoin with one of the local electronic merchants recently. Just on the last weekend, my and my wife visited a big electronic showroom to buy an air conditioner for our bedroom. Even though I had the fiat amount ready for the purchase, I asked the sales guy if he wants to take bitcoin or not. I was so upset when he says, what does that mean? is it a new kind of credit card company? The same guy made me understand what an inverter AC is and what are the benefits of it. But when it comes to bitcoin, he is completely unaware. That is the sad reality I guess!

And aside from that i am also expecting one of a good reward that might be possibly given for the coming end of the ICO for BITSCHOOL. Since this ICO is one of the best ICO's in 2018 that had already gather a good amount from the crowd and it is a matter of time that we will going to receive the reward.

Honestly should be a trend. Imagine 5 people walks into your store asking if you accept bitcoin. As a guy who has zero knowledge about bitcoin, you will try to learn about it. You will get curious about it. As a guy who has some knowledge about bitcoin but not really enough (the guy who just heard about bitcoin), you will try to research more about it since it's not alien to you at all. As a guy who knows bitcoin quite well, you will start researching about how to integrate it to your store. Once this "Hey do y'all accept bitcoin?" question has become a trend, merchants are going to start researching about it and eventually start accepting it. They will have signages saying "We accept bitcoin here!" and non-bitcoin users who will walk into the store will start to be curious about it. It's just a matter of setting a trend after all.

Yes, I had a chat, I found out that now bitcoin can be paid in general for everyone around the world so I'm interested in how this relates to merchants

This truly depends on your location where you're from will play a major role in it, some countries are liberal while some are strict. Some have completely banned it, and some have left the space open for it. It's difficult to say that we can do this that easily as the op thinks, it could only happen if a country is liberal and is ready to adopt it, then there're chances of this happening.

How much will a bitcoin transaction cost? In order to buy coffee for $ 2.75 you will have to pay a fee of $ 3.75. Do you think it's normal? This is provided that now the price of bitcoin and transactions is very low. Such purchases are always more profitable to make for Fiat. Maybe this is part of a peace Treaty between bankers and the main owners of cryptocurrencies?

I think hotels and restaurants will be the first establishments which will start taking payment in crypto. 2 Cafe's in my city started accepting Bitcoincash and also talking about PundiX POS machines. Its a good start I guess.

Many people around the world still have no idea about crypto so it's not an easy conversation. Even if they find it beneficial, many laws in the country have banned it making it next to impossible to use any cryptos. Additionally, those with whom I interacted, feared the volatility of cryptos giving them a reason to avoid it completely.

Yes, you are correct. WE need to talk about Bitcoin more for its exposure. The more is the exposure, the more demand of it will increase. As such, there is a chance that the prices might also increase.

That's really nice to hear.It should be followed by every bitcoiner so that the word bitcoin would spread faster and it would get accepted as a payment. Now with very low transaction fee, there would not be an issue for merchants to accept bitcoin as payment.

it's almost impossible to to that in my country (Indonesia) since the government here is really againts bitcoin so the people in my country is afraid is heard "bitcoin" thing, they thing it's a scam and won't to know it further.
If i ask like that, people will don't know what bitcoin it is or they afraid because the government said it's a scam.

You are lucky that the conversation went that way. Here, the media does its best to show cryptocurrencies in a bad light to the public. If you ask a merchant if they accept bitcoin, not only do they give you a funny look (because most of the time they have zero idea what it is) but they almost automatically assume you are a scammer.

Indeed, you are right. WE have to discuss Bitcoin more for its introduction. The more is the presentation, its more request will increment. Accordingly, quite possibly the costs may likewise increment.

My honest opinion is that merchant adoption and trying to get people to use BTC for their daily purchases and such isn't particularly important for the success or failure of Bitcoin itself. No matter how you slice it, for the consumer, using a card with rewards and perks is going to be better. Sure the merchant takes the hit on fees. But the consumer also gets protection. Right now consumers have the advantage, and while merchants might like BTC better as it's better for them, trying to sell it to a population is difficult. Selling it to them as an investment asset makes more sense. Buy BTC for savings, spend your fiat.
