Made me laugh! ;D They clearly wanted to make a scene out of this, so they prepared little stations for people and gave each a "piece of the pie" so they can drill holes in it and have loads of fun. I think it was at the behest of the government, and/or maybe just this: If they wanted to clear the data they could've just used a large neodymium magnet, submerged the it in acid, or burn it.
