Title: test mining rig
Post by: desijays on February 01, 2014, 12:52:58 PM
Looking to convert an existing machine to a mining rig.

My existing machine has the following configuration,

  • 450W PSU
  • 4 GB RAM
  • Motherboard has 2 PCI slots, 1 PCIe(16 lane), 1 PCIe(1 lane)
  • The processor is an old intel processor I believe.

If I got a 280x; would I be able to use it in the PCIe(16 lane) slot. I plan on using only one GPU because the mobo has only one PCIe(16 lane) slot.
Is it possible to use the PCIe(1 lane) slot as well?

I am new to mining and I would like to know what are the most common issues I will face while trying to construct the mining rig?
Linux or Windows? And if so which distro or version? I know there is no one right answer. But I'm sure the community prefers one over the other.
I think most of the issues will crop up when I try to use more than one GPU on a mining rig. But since I plan on using only one GPU for this mining rig, I think it shouldn't be very difficult.

And finally, the most important question of all,

Where do you guys buy your computer parts? Is there any online store that sells the 280x?
WHere can I buy mobo's with good number of PCIe slots and quality PSU's?
Is there a standard place where you guys buy all this?

Thanks.

450W PSU - This won't run anything. You'll need at least a 600W PSU for the 280x. Buy a 800W if you want to use 2 of them.
Expect to use 250W - 300W per Graphics card and 150W for the system.

Yes , you can use a 1x port for a Graphics card. Get a 1x-16x riser.
Read here for how to build a rig --> http://www.coinminingrigs.com/

Pre -Owned  - You aren't likely to get a 280x though

primeabgb sucks btw .. im still stuck with a PSU from that shop  which had burnt sockets while in usage and now they are saying it wont be replaced/will take 2-3 months for even a chance to get replaced. Dam i regret having a PSU from primeabgb.

450w is good enough for a single r9 280x

I've one rig running these below on a 450W PSU
Intel DZ75ML-45K MotherBoard
Intel i5 3330
Vengeance 2 x 8Gb
Intel 60GB SSD
seagate 1TB HDD
4x 80mm Fans

Can't really say if that 450watt is good enough unless you can tell us what brand it is.
You should probably get a decent seasonic unit. They are expensive but they are super high quality at the same time and can last for years and years.

I was referring to the OP's PSU.
His could be a zebronics or an iball which are total crap.

I would prefer changing Power supply with "cooler master 700W" zebronic or iball PSU wont support GPU like R9 28X
Consider extra cooling with fans, you will get Hardware errors with more heat

A seasonic S12II 520 or a corsair vs550 would be a much better choice.
The only good cooler master PSUs are the silent pro series.
