Title: New Avalon Batch
Post by: knedle on February 02, 2014, 08:46:52 PM
Looks like new Avalon Batch is coming after New year:

http://avalon-asics.com/product/avalon2-new-2u-size-machine-300ghs-with-a3255/

Unfortunatelly price doesn't seem so cool.

5BTC for 300GH/s Avalon is 0.0167 BTC/GH
vs
1.45 BTC for 180GH/s Antminer = 0.0081 BTC/GH

which is more than twice the price for Avalon, that also has highest power consumption and probably highest HW errors rate

Admittedly, I really like the design of this.  However, the pricing, power usage, and manufacturer prevents me from taking it seriously.

There seem to be a lot of typos in the price fields.

I think they must have meant the price was 0.5 BTC. That would actually be competitive and interesting, otherwise an antminer is a lot less costly— more than enough to ignore the form-factor an included power supply differences, especially considering the power usage. Maybe it could find a use filling in some space in colos with fixed-per-rack power costs.

Under an assumed growth of 2%/day a 315GH/s device delivered Feb-15th will only mine 2.54 BTC in its life. That kind of growth can't be sustained, but it could certainly be sustained long enough to make something drawing 3.2W/GH worthless.

Yeah that seems a bit expensive.

Go fuck yourselves guys.  I hope the chinese government raids your mine that you stole from batch 2 buyers and destroys every private key you hold.

Any thoughts/knowledge on ngzhangs association with gridchip?

I agree, the minute I saw the photos I wanted it, but after that I saw the price and didn't care about it anymore.

Nah, too expensive and not competitive enough.

Why they couldn't do standard PCIe card design with a lot of power connectors?

Until today, we have shipped 6PHash Avalon chips all over the world. Almost 85% was from the Avalon2 A3255 chip.

About our next chip. Here is some information. the chip codenamed A3233, it has been manufactured in factory, you will get samples at March 2014. A3233 will be several times better than A3255 on the performance and energy efficiency. In addition, our fourth-generation chip also under developing.

Avalon is a bit...well, old and crusty.  Like ASICMiner's chip.  No longer competitive, even when compared to BFL's chips.

I run some Avalon stuff here (HEX16A2), but even though they were dirt cheap, they're slow.  Almost identical board using BitFury chips does more than double the hashing for no more heat or power use.

Those Avalon clone machines out of China are pretty overpriced too...I think Avalon needs a new chip, one that's much more efficient that the current designs.
