Title: BTC not permitted on eBay?
Post by: phathash on March 14, 2011, 09:34:45 PM
A quick search of keyword "bitcoin" revealed nothing on eBay. Further reasearch revealed that bitcoin would likely fall under the definition "instant cash transfer service", which are not permitted.

"eBay.com.au prohibits the use of instant cash wire transfer services." -

"Payment Services not permitted on eBay: AlertPay.com, anypay.com, AuctionChex.com, BillPay.ie, ecount.com, cardserviceinternational.com, CCAvenue, ecount, e-gold, eHotPay.com, ePassporte.com, EuroGiro, FastCash.com, Google Checkout, gcash, GearPay, Goldmoney.com, graphcard.com, greenzap.com, ikobo.com, Liberty Dollars, Moneygram.com, neteller.com, Netpay.com, paychest.com, payingfast.com, Payko.com, paypay, Postepay, Qchex.com, rupay.com, sendmoneyorder.com, stamps, Stormpay, wmtransfer.com, xcoin.com" -

A few years back eBay attempted to force all payments to be made via PayPal (in Australia). Even Internet bank transfers would not be permitted. There was an uproar from sellers, and I believe anti-competitive laws crushed these plans at the time.

There are lots of ways to advertise 'cash' transfers through eBay... Example:

$9,109,506.99
Buy It Now

I'm guessing there is an hidden transaction behind, possibly for money laundring.

OK, but what is the base of this accusation ?
And how is one supposed to deduce that from the auction content ?

Everything else he's selling seems to have a somewhat reasonable price. If he's not really selling that one CD for that much, what could he be selling? Why would he want to sent that much money though Paypal?

I've asked ebay, they've responded. They do not want bitcoins used on ebay.

eBay does not like hard currency.

Fortunately they lost this battle -

Could they do anything if you were selling an encrypted wallet file, to which the buyer would get the password/key for free after the purchase?

You're conflating two issues: using bitcoins to buy things on eBay; and using eBay to sell bitcoins for dollars.
