Title: Merit as a Bookmark for good comments - 120 merit history
Post by: bitmover on June 15, 2018, 02:21:26 PM
I was using merit also as a bookmark tool.
When I saw a good comment which I would like to come back in the future, I was meriting them
This way I could easily check them back in my merit history.

But merit history is going to be wiped after 120 days. Is this really necessary? I wish merit history was like the blockchain, forever recorded .

I know Dmrdmr save merit history in google sheets, which could be accessed, but I would prefer to access the merit history here.

It's necessary to keep the database light weight. If my memory serves me right then I can recall somewhere theymos explained it. I will try to bring the reference if I feel ok. I am still fighting against the  dengue fever.

Request your full merit history with Loyce: Full merit transaction history for any user (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4444830.0)

Edit:

got it... But did you see how Loyce formats it? It's very similar to how BitcoinTalk does (with clickable links). For example, here is satoshi's merit history. (http://loycevsbasement.privatedns.org/MeritHistory/3_2018-06-09_Sat_16.10h.html)

Just checked it. LoyceV is doing a great deal.

You need to understand that this merit thing will become old with time and people will kind of get used to it like other features. Not recording very old merits means that the admin does not give much importance to it.

I know that this has some demerits also like it will hide the unreported merit abuse cases but we have follow the decision of admin (whose decisions had done only good to the forum so far).

That's not really the case at all. There's other features on the forum that can 'bookmark' a merited post like the watch list feature. You could also bookmark it personally via browser or by copying it in a text file. It just seems unnecessary data to keep for the long term, especially when members have sent out a few thousand merits. I'm sure theymos had plans to release a data dump on the full merit transactions just like he has with other things.

Honestly I don't see it as that big of a deal that merits get removed every 120 days. Yeah, it might be nice to know the merited posts, but only a select few would actually browse them, and take a look. The majority of forum users won't care for it.

Already available. This file updates every Friday and shows every merit transaction in the last 120 days: https://bitcointalk.org/merit.txt.xz

True. Only the minority of the users will use the merit history as a bookmark function. For most, it's useless as they only merit the users to help (the deserving ones) to rank up. And not to mark the posts they like.
