Title: Report to merit sources - to give them merits.
Post by: jonemil24 on June 16, 2018, 05:49:20 PM
I'm itching to merit a post/topic because I find them informative and helpful but I can't.

I know that there are merit sources here that gets sMerits a month and they are supposed to give an "x" amount of merit if they find a post/topic informative or good, but these merit sources are only few and I'm not sure if they can handle all of the posts here.

To help these merit sources, I would like to suggest to add a function like "Report to merit sources" and let them review if the posts are informative or helpful.

Here is a thread which I find informative but only one user bothered to give some merits- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140793.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140793.0) and I found posts on that thread informative.

P.S, delete if someone already asked for this.

Um....that would be useless, because all the shitposters would be constantly reporting their alts' posts to the merit sources.

You're being impatient with the system.  Maybe Theymos will tap a bunch of other people to be merit sources in time--he definitely should, because I don't think there are enough of them.  The main problem as I see it is that most posts are just complete shitposts in broken English.  Probably even local board posts are lazy ones, but I have no way of evaluating that.  It just seems like most bounty participants are lazy with what they write and put zero effort into their posts.  It's not surprising that many, many posts are going unmerited.

Shitposters and bounties are already here ever since I came here.

If merit sources are scanning each posts, then reviewing a post reported to them won't be hard. If it's a shitposter, they have the right to ignore those reports.

It's easy: make good posts yourself, you'll earn Merit, and with that sMerit to give away. But most of your posts are countless lists of Twitter links, so it's unlikely you'll earn much Merit.
But: your English is decent (compared to most people who post on the Philippines local board, and you seem to be able to produce decent posts.

I wouldn't mind getting suggestions of worthy posts, but it has to come from a source I trust not to waste my time.

I'm pretty sure this has been suggested before. It won't work: it's very subjective which posts receive Merit. From my own posts, the ones Merited are often not the ones I would have expected to get any.

The thread was started over 5 years ago, that's why I won't likely read it anymore.

I'm reading stuff because I'm interested in it. If someone suggests something, it's like a random entry to me.
While I'm reading poss anyway, Meriting them only takes a few seconds, just like reporting posts (which I do much more often).

I really understand the OP.

It's hard to get exposure to merit sources . One thing that really helped me to get exposure of my comments was Joe's campaign
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3784164.0
Unfortunately it's paused now for like 2 months already :(

It was very good because there were good posters there. Joe also made a nice selection of posts so merit sources could just go there and merit them. They were not random posts.

I wish we could have more campaigns like this one.

Not a feasible idea, because Merit is very subjective in nature. You think the post is very informative and good in Gambling section, but might be Merit source detest gambling/ or no idea/competency to judge that post.
We already have a concept of collecting all good post and apply for Merit source. Post reported in Merit source application automatically gather views an eventually merits, if it is a worthy post.

Why not start your own campaign same as Joe's. You have good quality posts that are merited so I guess you are credible enough to assess newbies post if it's of quality or not. There will be lots of people who are willing to donate merits and prizes for newbies who are really putting an effort to every post they make. You should give it a shot.

In my opinion if you need to report your post to get merit from source the system is not working and needs to be changed. (or the sources needs to be changed).
Asking to a merit source to evaluate your posts, in my opinion, is begging for merit.
I know people have a life outside the forum but if they don't have time to read and to evaluate posts around the forum they should not be source in the first place. (keep in my this is my personal idea and can be wrong)

The merit sources decide to give merits to other users, then these users decide whom they will give their own merits. Any user having sMerit can give your a merit, not only the merit sources. Therefore no need to beg from the merit sources to evaluate your post. I saw the threads where some users ask about undervalued worthy post in order to give them a merit. Try to find these threads.

Maybe flagging posts to merit sources so they can merit it, especially since you might not have the merit yourself. However, there shouldn't be any reward for doing this. What this could possibly do though is highlight those that report good posts to merit sources as a potential merit source themselves. Might make it a little easier for theymos to determine good users for the job.

At the moment merit sources are picked based on their ability to reward merits. The problem with this is that a lot of users don't earn enough merit themselves to highlight this. You don't necessarily have to be a good poster yourself to determine what is a good post. You could apply for merit source anyway, and just show your ability with 10 posts quoted, but this likely isn't enough. There's definition a flaw in the merit selection process due to this fact, and is likely the reason why we haven't gotten that many more.

I'm not sure how your idea( technical details) will work as long as merit sources will see your flagged posts.

there shouldn't be any reward for doing this..
If there will be a child board on each sections dedicated to top merited posts(topic only), it will be easy to find a quality topic for readers. - this will be a reward.

highlight those that report good posts to merit sources as a potential merit source themselves....You don't necessarily have to be a good poster yourself to determine what is a good post. You could apply for merit source anyway, and just show your ability with 10 posts quoted, but this likely isn't enough.

Bounty hunters like me shouldn't be qualified cause it will only raise suspicions.

I am now locking this thread because there is a new one which I think is similar to mine.

And lastly, I hope merit sources will no longer have the ability to ignore a user.

Edited so many times, I had so much trouble quoting @loycev's post and decided to remove it.
