Title: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Post by: MelMan2002 on September 21, 2011, 02:05:53 AM Is it possible to track down the thief who stole my 90 bitcoins? It was taken in 2 transactions, both to the same destination address:
http://pi.uk.com/bitcoin/address/1FfoAXmHk14vSPzkSrDyYBjbGYujMX8JQj I've been sending more bitcoins to that address (through dailybitcoins.org/) to try and get more IPs associated with the address but as far as I can tell they seem to be behind a proxy. I emailed MtGox and TradeHill to see if any of the addresses are familiar to them and they are not. Is there anyway to track this guy down?? Edit: new link for the address since it looks like pi.uk.com no longer does this: https://blockchain.info/address/1FfoAXmHk14vSPzkSrDyYBjbGYujMX8JQj Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Post by: MelMan2002 on September 21, 2011, 01:19:53 PM I was stupid and listed them on eBay. For some reason I thought that that extra layer would make it ok to sell through PayPal but I was obviously wrong as PayPal put the dispute in the thief's favor...

He's got them now, if a bitcoin exchnage can't get a user to give back 511BTC that was accidently sent to them I doubt you'll have much luck. Its so easy to steal btc these days. Theres so many problems with the exchanges, online btc game accounts etc. People put way too much faith into the security of simple systems. I am contributing to the original question tracking him down is useless if you can't do anything afterwards. The police won't be able to help you and paypal and ebay won't help because you're trying to sell a digital good with no proof of transfer and acting against their TOS's Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Post by: DeathAndTaxes on September 26, 2011, 07:15:47 PM So no more ideas then? No. Bitcoin was designed to be irreversible and anonymous. You traded irreversible and anonymous funds for funds which were both reversible and very public. There is nothing you or anyone else can do about it at this point. The thousands of bitcoins stolen/scammed from mybitcoin have (and never will be) recovered. Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Post by: zer0 on October 01, 2011, 12:21:49 AM if you're going to sell on ebay, ship the buyers registered mail or at least a flat letter with tracking. put a pin# in there so they can claim the coins off a different site you build. now you're selling a coupon/voucher not direct currency exchanging.. and it will satisfy 95% of the chargebacks you will get, especially if you only ship to verified addresses. Because you are selling a Game Card or w/e you scheme up, this doesn't violate the paypal TOS for currency trading. Read the TOS and get creative. you will win chargebacks almost everytime
LR/WMZ exchangers that gamble with paypal typically make disposable paypal accounts that are linked to an anonymous ATM card they can use to withdraw immediately to avoid fraud problems and don't do anything over $200. They also hold for 5-7 days to allow the system to claw back money if there was blatant fraud. They will wait until cash is in hand at the ATM before doing anything. This ebook will tell you everything you need to know about making dozens of non linked paypal accounts http://www.auctionstealth.com/ they also have a forum where they sell new accounts, and ebay accounts already w/feedback then you go on the talkgold forums and other sites to find people selling VBA + Atm (virtual bank account) these are cheap, can usually take out $500/day without even needing to submit ID to the bank or just xfer to your regular account once you get the funds. lot's of banks in Italy or Panama sell USD mastercards to anybody you can withdraw from any ATM in the world with for tolerable fees (add them into your price for paypal payment.. risk must = reward). this is the only safe way to sell via paypal or else they'll freeze your account and you're fucked i haven't looked into SMS code selling apparently it covers the same tracking requirement so you may get away with that instead (buywmz.com does this) Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Post by: MelMan2002 on September 25, 2014, 12:23:40 PM Alright, I managed to do some searching in the blockchain and matched up some of the transactions with addresses:
Code: Wallet,Entry,Date,Operation,Amount, destination address I did manage to get the withdrawal addresses but as far as I can tell they are another exchange (or something). I couldn't identify them as deposits into another mtgox wallet. I might be at a dead-end here unless someone has a good way to trace out things from these addresses. Anybody? Post by: MelMan2002 on September 25, 2014, 12:34:45 PM Also if anyone has leaked docs that tie the name to the wallet id on gox then I guess that would work too.

Mt.gox has apparently lost all the bitcoins anyway. They withdrew almost all of the coins that they had in gox. Title: Re: Help - 90 BTC stolen - Possible to track down theif? Post by: MelMan2002 on November 29, 2017, 05:12:48 PM I still haven't had any closure from this. Anyone have any fresh ideas?
