Again we saw an exchange got hacked. There would be nothing to hack there if people didn't keep their coins on exchanges! For the love of Dog (lol), don't keep your coins on exchanges, start practicing safety, this is your investment we are talking about!

Sometimes you can not immediately sell your coins or tokens on the stock exchange and you have to take risks, although I think that all traders should know that leaving the currency on the exchanges is quite dangerous. It often happens that sellers put their coins or tokens at a fixed price for sale and if the buyer is located, the transaction occurs without the participation of the seller. This is quite convenient, so people will continue to risk, because wallets in the market are not very often and everyone hopes that it will bypass them.

People never learn of keeping off their funds on exchanges. They are thinking that the security of that exchange shall be enough to protect their funds.
But once these hackers started to go through the backdoor, all of these funds where off and gone through their pocket.
It's not bad to put a small amount to an exchange so you won't be itching the small transfer fees but make sure that it is acceptable if its lost.

Yes, it is one of the main rules in crypto. Exchange does not mean wallet. Better pay fee, then lose everything because of hack, scam or another issue.

Wallets are hacked more often than exchanges. Crypto market in general is an unsafe market, here at every step there is danger: it is dangerous to invest, the project can be fraudulent; it is dangerous to buy a crypt - it can fall in price, hold in a wallet is dangerous, it is dangerous on the exchange. To withdraw is dangerous. How terrible to live!

It really depends on what you plan to do with your coins, and how you will trade with them.
If your idea is just to hold, well, of course it's better to withdraw from exchanges and store them in a wallet.

But if your idea is to trade and try to get benefice from a pump or from a sudden raise, there's no alternative way but to keep them on the exchange, to be ready to sell them.

Most of the time, I have open orders for my coins that I keep on the exchanges.

I could not agree more. People need to stop taking chances for convenience sake. Maybe it's convenient to leave them on the exchange but it's totally not convenient to lose thousands of dollars.

If im not mistaken i think you are referring to coinrail exchange, i think the damage was not huge in that hack, the hacker was only able to takeaway some amounts of a couple of tokens and that too the exchange officials are investigating and soon they will catch the hacker and recover the tokens hopefully, secondly i do agree that we should not store our coins on exchanges, personal wallet with private key is the way to store.

Some prefer to keep altcoins on exchanges. This is very convenient, as modern trading platforms support dozens and even hundreds of different altcoins. However, this approach has many drawbacks, because the user has to trust the funds to a third party.
Most crypto exchanges are not insured against hacking. All this jeopardizes the safety of funds, and sometimes you can temporarily lose access to funds because of technical works or interruptions in the work of the service. Therefore, users who do not sell large volumes on exchanges should consider other options for long-term storage.

Every exchange, though it is one of the biggest or trusted exchange are hacked, it become very ordinal thing in the eyes of investors. The decentralized exchange volume will probably make 1000x next years. Hodling oax is so good decision for me  :)

This is something that shocks me every time I see people losing large amounts on an exchange, every single coin I've bought spends as little time as possible in an exchange. Until they are safe and secure away from the exchanges I can't rest.

It's a real shame we have to be so safety conscious but in the crypto world you need to be mega careful with your coins and ensure they are secure at all times.

saving coins on an exchange is a stupid thing, it's very dangerous, it's the same you give someone a chance to take your coins, many people put their coins too long on the bourse and eventually their coins are gone, remember! do not put your coins on the exchange too long, you better put them back in your wallet.

But with the recent incidents of exchange hacking this only gives an idea that every exchange can be hacked even the most secured ones. Day trading is popular but they have to make sure that after they trade, they must pull out and move their funds somewhere which is more secured like a hardware wallet or desktop wallet where they have full control of their funds. I guess laziness is what triggering others for letting their coins sleep on exchanges and they trying to avoid fees, I feel that way either.

This is correct. It's unsafe to keep your cryptos for a long time in an exchange because everything can happen and your money will be stolen, we should be careful of keeping our money there, the best thing is to withdraw our winning in just a few days at the maximum. Why there is some web wallet? web wallets and hardware wallets are for saving our bitcoin with a high security and exchanges are for trading not for saving our money, keep that in mind guys.

It is understandable that some people that trade everyday keep their coins in exchanges but I think that if people really care about their coins it will be preferable that at the end of the day they send their coins to an address of which they are the only person with the private key, yes it is true that you are going to spend more on fees but it is better to lose some fees than it is to lose all your money.

Always sage advice, having control of your own private keys is essential to minimise the risk of hacking. At least you can do everything to protect your own investment and not rely on an exchange to keep it safe. I tend to keep some of mine on exchanges for quick trades, but the majority are tucked away on cold wallets. I don't personally have an account on Bithumb, but $31 million was a good sized haul for the hackers.

Do you love DOGE coins? It is risky to store cryptos on exchange floors, and you can easily lose the number of cryptos you have. So if you shop on exchange floors on a long-term investment then store at hardware wallets such as Trezor and Ledge Nano S.

The thing is that cryptocurrency newcomers, and the majorty of people in the cryptosphere, find exchanges (and even web wallets) way more user-friendly than hardware/desktop wallets.

And it's obvious (at least for most of us since we've been in the cryptosphere for quite a while now) that exchanges aren't safe, but let's be honest, how many people actually care about safety nowadays? all they want to do is invest and make money, that's what the majority wants to do, and most people don't even keep up to date with cryptocurrency news so I doubt they'll ever know the consequences of keeping ALL your coins in a exchange.

The rational for the argument is typically something along the lines of wanting to have the coins in the exchange so that they're able to make use of the market swings and don't get caught waiting on a transaction to go through while the market rises/crashes. It makes sense in a way, but it's not very intelligent when you consider the risks involved, as we have seen recently.

yes bad news that keeps coming like this really makes the price of BTC is also getting worse, but if there is no balance in our exchange account, how will trading still running? how will the volume rise if there is not something to trade?

more people are actually saving their coins / tokens on exchange in order to instant sell, but if all accounts have no balance so, the volume are dead. and also those exchange wouldn't be interesting.

This is why i don't keep my coins on the exchange just spendable amount. However we can't avoid storing our money out there since we're doing trading we might cashout all the money once we got profit but as a day trader moving those coins and send back to exchange everyday it'll be charged a lot, so the only way is using decentralized exchange.

It is difficult to sell if a quick pump happens and you alts are still on some other wallet, but the risk of letting your coins sit in an exchange js still far more dangerous than just being late to a pump.

What exchange are you talking about? If you are referring to Poloniex, and this probably applies to any other exchange, all you have to do is comply with the rules (sadly, rules like KYC) that they stipulate. As long as you follow these, keep your account active, then you should have less reason to fear exchanges.

Personally, i am KYC-ed on all of the exchanges i have my money on. My portfolio is spread across 3 big exchanges and has been for a year now. No problems here.

I think it comes down to a combination of laziness and people trusting the exchange too much, maybe wowed by its slick interface.

Sometimes it takes a lot of time to get all your coins out and into seperate wallets, so it's just easier to leave them in there, thinking it will not happen to that exchange.

How to, not to keep your coins in exchange if you are selling or buying coins on it. Ofcourse for you to get good profits you need to stay your coins on the exchange and do day trading, we cannot predict when the hacker came to hack the exchange, meaning the exchange didnt have a good security because they got hack. And traders suffer that fault from exchange.

I am thankful that there are post like this to raise awareness to new traders just like me. I know that there will be more transaction fees if we are going to transfer back the money to our wallets then transfer it again to exchange if we are going to trade again, better to have additional transaction fee than lose all your coins/invest in an exchange because of this shit security. We can never know if this is an inside job or what but I think this is the only best way we can do to keep our tokens safe.

If you are heavily invested in crypto, its always better to invest in a hardware wallet and use it for storing your coins. I personally prefer Ledger, however, Trezor works great too. Choice is yours, invest wisely, keep your coins, private keys safe. Never trust an exchange just because its big. Hacks happen on big exchanges.

Good day. Been using Etherdelta by the time it was hacked luckily there's a withdrawal option to withdraw funds even if you're can't open the site. I was able to secure some of my precious altcoins. I don't leave my coins there again. Been using Idex now due to coins gets listed there fast just after ICO. But since the news of another hacking, I decided to withdraw my coins there too. Better keep in my wallet for the meantime since trading is a little bit slow due to the downtrend of ETH and BTC. It would be painful to lose hard earned coins.

This is the risk mate, how can you trade if you don't have the coin on the exchanges. Its true that's exchanges nowadays are not safe because of the current hacking issues, But I think if its a big exchange I still your funds are still safe with them. I've encounter so many people that thinks saving up their coin in the exchange site as the most convenient way, they said that you can trade it an instant. But when something bad happened like what happened to Mt.Gox people will start screaming and want their right to the asset back.
Just for the sake of security they gladly giving away the security they have, kinda really absurd.

On exchanges you can keep your coins and money in small quantities, as anything can happen and you can lose everything, so be careful.

This cannot be stressed enough, a lot of people seem to use exchanges to save their coins instead of putting these coins in their wallets, they do not understand that this is very risky and they run a higher risk of losing their coins if they store it in an exchange instead of a wallet, if the exchange gets hacked, you can lose all of your coins

A reason people do this is because of when they trade quite regularly the withdrawal/deposit fees can be quite high and eat into your profits - i think that's what makes a lot of people just keep their coins on exchanges.

Though as a rule of thumb, personally i'd only ever keep an amount on a large well known exchange. Even that's not a guarantee, Mt. Gox anyone?

The problem with this is that cryptocurrencies give all the power back to the people, which means that we are 100% responsible for our own security and people are too used to rely on others to do that job for them and then they are surprised it is impossible to recover their money unlike what banks can do if you get hacked, so people need to inform themselves better about the ideology behind cryptocurrencies before they invest.

I agree with you. Keep crypto currency for long-term storage on the stock exchange. But this option is not suitable for crypto-currency traders, since they need to have the crypto currency always on the exchange. Therefore, crypto-currency traders need to partially withdraw their funds from the exchange.

Yes, it is not safe to keep your coins or tokens in exchanges for too long. But, it may be quite difficult for the long term traders who may need to set a limit order while waiting for the order to be met. I think this is one of the major reason you will always find coins in exchanges.

That is the risk they have chosen to take, cryptocurrencies are meant to be held for you and no one else, if someone else has access to your private key then you do not own any coins and leaving your coins in an exchange means that you are basically trusting that exchange to secure your coins in your name and as we have seen many times already most of the time their security is not enough to protect your coins.

Times without number has it been mentioned that people do not keep their coins on exchanges yet they do not listen. Exchanges are not an alternative for wallets, if you are holding your coins for a while and you are not trading the coins then you should transfer those coins to your wallet and keep them safe. Your coins are not safe on exchanges

I keep only the coins that I have in my investment portfolio on the stock exchange. In addition to the password is also authorization through FA2, so you should only be afraid that the exchange itself will go bankrupt. And the other coins are on the Ledger.

People are thinking that the security of that exchange will be enough to protect their funds in real time. But it is not true, you can be hacked in every moment even by now. For long-term storage you must creat a wallet and keep your moneythere.

That's among the first rules people have to read before join crypto.

Never give yout private key and never store your coins/tokens on exchanges. The most of exchanges are centralized, it means that you (crypto holder) haven't the private key of exchange address. If the exchange closes (scam or other reasons) you can say goodbye to your funds.

I concur with you. Keep cryptographic money for long haul stockpiling on the stock trade. In any case, this choice isn't reasonable for digital money brokers, since they need the cryptographic money dependably on the trade. Hence, cryptographic money brokers need to in part pull back their assets from the trade.

I whole-heartedly agree with you but I would say it's easier said than done especially when you HODL like 30+ coins/tokens. It's a big PITA to download a wallet for each one of these coins, and even if you have a LEDGER or one of these 'universal' wallets, chances are you're still going to have to download individual wallets, especially for some of these smaller cap projects that will likely never get support on these universal wallets. I would definitely recommend removing coins off of lesser-known exchanges because then you're asking to lose your coins (happened to me with Raiblocks/Nano, got screwed big time by Bitgrail) but when it comes to the bigger ones like Bittrex and Binance I honesty think most people have nothing to worry about. Lastly, I'd say with BTC, LTC or ETH, or anything you're heavily vested into for that matter, yes that's a no brainer to move them off exchanges, but any other relatively small investments on more popular exchanges you can probably get away with just keeping them there until you're ready to sell.

If you are there in the world of the crypto currencies and that you are planning for long term investment of money, then it is better to keep your coins in your own wallet instead of keeping them on any of the exchange. There are so many hackers and scammers around which are constantly looking for the ways to grab your money and you need to stay away from such kind of people to stay safe.

Maybe it's rather the problem of the exchange that did not take enough precautions to protect the people's savings?
I also assume that hack attacks could be successful because of leak of data from the owners of the exchange..

as I would like to think, on the off chance that it is smarter to keep the cryptographic money resources in the official wallet or cool wallet. In any case, there are circumstances where a few stages are not exceptionally advantageous and secure, so individuals are compelled to keep a portion of their benefits on the trade and If you don't exchange at that point there is no motivation behind why you should leave your coins holding tight the stock knowing completely well that the trade is the objective primary programmer.

Yeah, lots of good wallet options out there.  As if trading wasn't risky enough, you have to worry about hacking or exit scams.  Still, if you're in the trading game, it's kind of a must to leave some amount of coins on exchanges to be able to do what you need in a timely manner.  I only trade with a small amount of my bag ever, and often it will be on 2 different exchanges until I've done what I need.  Then back in the wallet unless I'm continuing to trade it...very rarely do I ever have an amount that's not tied up in an order on an exchange.  Stay safe everybody!

It is a very good point. Exchanges got hacked and sometime beyond hacking, there is the issues of traffic that makes the sites to become slow. The truth is that say for instance I buy coin from the exchange, I dont see any need transferring to my ether wallet because that will mean transferring it back to the exchange before i will be able to sell. All these will cost extra charges at my own expense. We should just pray for good and strong hack-proof exchange sites so we can also have peace of mind knowing our investment is safe. That is why we should support promising and upcoming exchange platform with good project in this regard. one to look out for is Ruby-X among others.

Now and again you can not promptly offer your coins or tokens on the stock trade and you need to go out on a limb, in spite of the fact that I surmise that all merchants should realize that leaving the cash on the trades is very perilous. It regularly happens that dealers put their coins or tokens at a settled cost available to be purchased and if the purchaser is found, the exchange happens without the support of the merchant. This is very advantageous, so individuals will keep on risking, in light of the fact that wallets in the market are not all the time and everybody trusts that it will sidestep them.
