Title: R9 270 Motherboard Compatibility

I wanted to build a mining rig with a Sapphire R9 270X GPU. I already have a motherboard, which has 3 free PCI slots, 2 2.0 slots and 1 PCI Express slot.

I would like to ask, are they compatible? Or do I have to buy a new motherboard? If yes, then which is the cheapest with like 3 PCI slots that are compatible?

You can build a one GPU rig only. The R9 270X GPU will downgrade itself to PCI-e 2.0 and run, it will not affect mining performance as that uses very little bandwidth but it would affect high graphics functions such a playing games.

Actually 7970s don't even saturate the 2.0 bus, so even gaming is not changed.

Any PCIe slot you have should be able to mine, but you will need risers to use the smaller 1x slots.

No, you have only 1 PCI Express slot.

One more question: the card needs at least a power supply of 500W. If i install 2, do I need a power supply of 1000W?

That seems very high, according to the Sapphire site each of its R9 270X required 2 x 75W PCI-E power connectors, so 150 Watts per card, add 250 watts for a mobo, hard disk, dvd fans, etc would give you 400 - so a 500W power supply would give an efficient supply.

For 2 x R9 270X cards you would need a 650watt PSU or better.
