I forget coin's window wallet program's password.

So I can't send coin.

Then this coin is lost forever?

Are there no restore method?

If you are talking about Bitcoin Core, then yes. You will either need the unencrypted wallet file or the password to decrypt it and spend the coins.

If you have a high amount of BTC stored in your wallet, you could try a service that brute forces your password, like Wallet Recovery Services (https://walletrecoveryservices.com/) for 20% of your wallet balance.

Except if you have backed up your private keys separately with the command 'dumpprivkey' or 'dumpwallet'. It is possible to import your private key in another wallet.

Only if you have the code to restore your wallet. Otherwise it is impossible. It shows the high security of the currency.

Like someone else mentioned earlier, there are actually services that can be successful in cracking peoples password.

Basically they have a decent chance of succeeding the more information you can give them.

If you can tell them that your password is 9 characters long and always has 1979 in it and one capital letter, they can use that as a start to set some settings for brute forcing it.

It would still take tons of time. Also you are trusting the provides of said service to not screw you up once/if they are able to bruteforce the missing characters of the password. I know I wouldn't trust them, they could claim they weren't able to uncrack it, get your coins, and then a couple of years from now they may move it when least expected (and when BTC will be worth $100k+

I have lost HDDs because I screwed up while entering the passwords and they are fully encrypted, I just assume I cannot access these disks anymore, it's not worth the effort. If OP doesn't have much BTC then forget it and start getting ready to buy the dip, and this time remember the password.

That's what i thought when i first heard about these services, if they able to crack the password through your provided hints then they will have full access to your wallet and you never know what they are going to do with your BTC, you can't claim your BTC from them.
But as you have no other option, this would be the only thing you can do and expect positive response from them.

There are tools out there for brute-forcing wallet passwords. I'd recommend trying only the open-source ones.

How much time is "tons of time"?

If your password always has 1979 AND a capital letter, (assuming that the rest of your password uses only the letter, numbers, and symbols found on a standard U.S. QWERTY keyboard)

Then it would seem that (if I've got my maths correct) there are:

96*26*95*95*95*95 = 203,300,760,000 possible passwords.

If the service can try 100,000 passwords per second, then they could crack it in less than 2,033,007,6 seconds.  That's less than 24 days.

If they can try 1 millions passwords per second, then it will take them less than 2.5 days.


It requires a bit more technical ability on your part, but it is possible to provide a service with ONLY enough of your wallet for them to know when they've found the correct password without providing them enough information to access your private keys.  In this way, if they lie and say that they couldn't crack it, then they won't ever get anything.


Well, in that case, you've already lost the coins anyhow.  So, you haven't risked anything by trying to get the password cracked.  Sure, they've taken something that they SHOULD HAVE returned to you, but your alternative is: "not trying to find a trustworthy service", in which case you are no better off than having tried and found an untrustworthy service that took the coins.

Yes, depending on how much and how accurate the clues you can give them are to break the password it can take a very long time for sure.

With the other point it's then important to choose a service that has a reputation. I know there's at least one guy who's been doing this for years and makes his money by taking a cut of the found Bitcoin. He has a reputation to protect, so it's a bit unlikely that he'd throw it all away for one score when he can continue making a steady income for years.

Well, it is desirable to save the file wallet.dat-it's your habit to enter-immediately save the file separately to the USB flash drive.
Try to return to the recovery point-in some cases it helps.

one thing you should always remember is that having a wallet is like holding a crucial nuclear codes. Always keep in mind to have a copy of your recovery codes and passwords both digitally and handwritten on a paper. Value wallets as they are you wealth.

A very big shock you will receive as you forget your wallet password.at first you would look stupid and foolish.Fever will immediately show up and by your self,you start reacting your body that's if you have a high amount of BTC stored in your wallet.

First of all you can try to remember your password.you can also use the 12-word wallet recovery phrase.Another way is you can try a password cracker tool as a last resort.Before start the process you need the latest version of your bitcoin wallet file.

You can still get back your coins if you have the private key and import it into a new wallet or had backed up your wallet before the password was created and import the back up file into a new wallet.However, If you don't have either of them, i am afraid that your coins will be locked forever. >:(

Another way around this is if he has the recovery password though because  I remember there was a time I needed to install Electrum during the creation of account section, the question was asked if I have a seed and I had to which brought out the wallet then one can continue from there. But what I am not sure is if the password was still required after I entered the seed I have. The point is, one just need to be very careful and do the necessary backups in addition to having a unique password that can easily be remembered no matter the situation because you never can tell when your memory would fail you that you have to fall back to default mode which at that point would  be a life saver.

My thoughts exactly but then again if that money is already lost for you what else can you lose, right? It's a gamble but if it's your last chance to get your coins back then it's OK to go for it.

Lol, tell that to the people who recovered what is now millions of dollars in Bitcoin by using professionals to decrypt their wallet! Somehow I doubt you'd have the same idea if you had a wallet.dat sitting there encrypted with 10 BTC or something. :p

This is part of the decentralized nature of blockchain technology, you are in charge of your data.. Just try and remember it, as I don't think there is any other way of cracking it.

If you know the private key to access your wallet it will be work fine to have control on your wallet mate. Some of the wallet will be able to access with the .DAt file if you know mate.

Other than that you can access your wallets with the parity phase and e-mail linked with the wallet mate. These all can be applicable to each wallets. Some may accessible to web wallet and some may useful for you on using desktop wallet bro.

If you're going to suggest something like this then it isn't different on hacking tools.
I think you should just considerate on communicating with the personnels that is responsible for the site. But as far as I know mostly on these cases, users that has already lost their passwords cannot be retrieve.

Hopefully there is something that can develop for an app that can recover wallet password and share to everyone because it can be really helpful. I save my password on my phone and hardrives so there is always a backup when I lost the one. That is the way how I manage to not forget password because it is really important to access my account.

Try to log in using every possible password combination you may have used. Your 12 wallet word recovery phrase can be used if you forget your password. Enter the phrase using this form to create new wallet that contains all the addresses and balances contained in your previous wallet. Keep in mind this processes does NOT include funds stored in any imported addresses.

Man I don't want to disappoint you but you do are in trouble. Still I will first recommend you to try REMEMBER YOUR PASS.. just try with all the passwords you've already used for other accounts and wallets. And if that doesn't work just go with a bruteforce alternative. I would recommend with open source ones first and try and retry by yourself.. if you can't, contact some expert that can do that with you together somewhere.. and if also doesn't work,just go with a bruteforce professional and hopefully he will not steal your funds

This means that if you have forgotten the password to your wallet file, they might be able to crack it if you provide them enough information (e.g. length of your password, chars which for sure have been used in your password, excluded characters, patterns you use when choosing a password, etc.. )

Of course there is no guarantee that it will succeed.
But humans tend to pick weak passwords which also do not differ too much from older passwords.

A proper optimized algorithm can bruteforce such a low-quality password.

When you can already access your wallet you would able to know your private keys on such wallet address but if you didnt access it due to wrong password and you havent known the private keys then theres no chance for you to recover it and this is why your last resort would be using up some recovery services and as being said above these services wont give you a guaranteed success everytime.

Lost private keys are impossible to be recovered and only you could possibly solve it, if in any case you find your paper wallet, or restored your deleted/corrupted files.
But with lost wallet password, there is something you can do, and thats what the other guy was saying, brute forcing your password. A service the helps you crack down the possible combination of your password, although it takes time due to number of possible combination, but atleast youre doing something to recover you wallet.

Some wallets are secured in recovering lost password. i.e Coinbase. But for some it is an not an easy nut to crack. Losing private keys requires enough time. First trying to guess all the words that are in the password. Decoding these encrypted keys takes a lot of time. Who knows what will be  possible in the future with forgotten passwords. It is best to store wallet keys and password somewhere safe

Situations are very different. Sometimes losing a password does not mean that you have lost your money. For example, if it's a MEW and you have a private key, then you do not need to have a password and a JSON file, you can access your money without it. Or if, for example, you lost a seed-phrase from a hardware wallet, then you still have access to the funds because you have this device and a PIN to it. Therefore, in each individual case, the loss of the password will mean completely different consequences.

you may have imported private keys or an unencrypted file somewhere, look in the root folder of the program. or maybe you have programs on your computer that remember what you copy-paste. another option that perhaps you retained xpub from just purse in the form of text. a lot of options, because if there is a lot, then you have to do all the options

If you forgot your password just re import your key and set another wallet password that you could easily remember.

Probably not going to be an app, but just more people who are professionals that offer this as a service. But if you have a truly secure password, even the best of the best won't be able to crack it. And that means coins are lost forever.

A password is something you know which gives you access to something (either bei autorization or encryption/decryption).

A 'private key feature' does not exist. A private key is a big (random) number which has a mathematical relation to the public key.
In bitcoin, the private key allows to spend UTXO associated to the correlating public key.

An email is nowhere used inside the bitcoin network. Online sites/services require you to use an email to register.
But when losing a password for a wallet (we are not talking about a 'web wallet' like blockchain.info or a wannabe-web-wallet like coinbase) there is no option to reset it via email..

Recovering the password from the account is a very difficult task. It is necessary to search the Internet for the services of wallets or assistants in recovering passwords. A lot of hackers on the Internet, or if your friend is a hacker, he will even help you or tell you.

If the wallet is synchronized then i think you can do nothing but have to seek help from the professionals. But if you have not synced the wallet then passphrase is enough for you do reload the new wallet with old seed key and create a new password. Not a big deal until you have not sysnced the wallet.

Seriously, the answer mostly depends on the wallet software you use. You didn't tell us which one.

You need a private key, not a password, in order to spend your funds. But passwords are normally used in wallet software to encrypt private keys stored on your computer, to prevent unauthorized access from someone having access to your computer.

Some points:

1. I have seen software that doesn't encrypt private keys at all on the storage device but asks for the password or PIN code anyway -- very weak protection but can protect from non-technical attackers. It very well may be that your wallet does the same, in which case you can just extract the private keys from the file.

2. While you can forget about bruteforcing your private keys, bruteforcing a password is heaps easier. So if your software does encrypt the private keys using the password, you could try bruteforcing the encryption.

3. In rare cases, the software uses a key stretching algorithm to turn your password into a private key to the brain wallet. You can perform bruteforce search on that too.

4. Most important: think hard, when you first started the wallet, has it asked you to write down 12 English words on a piece of paper? like: give down gonna you let up never etc.? This is your seed recovery phrase, which would allow you to completely restore access to your wallet.

You should always be careful how you store your funds as the is no costumer support or what not.

If you even backed up your wallet.dat file "qt wallets" make sure to write the password somewhere safe as well.

Nonetheless I suggest you use a hardware wallet or some kind of wallet that lets you dump the privkey in seed phrase format or let alone you can dump the privkey and store it somewhere that way you shouldn't have any problem when losing your password.

Cold wallet is the way to go!

Don't snap a pic of your key and store it on your phone. Don't save the key on a file on your computer. Don't tattoo that shit in your arm.  Write it down on a piece of paper and put it somewhere safe. Something you won't throw out the next day, or move around and forget wtf happened.

Honestly, safety deposit box is not ideal but if it's a large institution, it's fine.

Ledger is a good way to store funds with paper backups. I personally recommend them.

If you are talking about bitcoin account password,  you should never forget it. And if something like that happen,  you should look for you account key. Those word you placed like puzzle when you are registering.

Your wallet password or private key if lost in cryptocurrency means your money is also lost forever. I don't think there will be any way out for you to recover your money.

This is a lesson for you when creating a wallet must use an intricate password but you will remember it as long as you need the wallet.
That is a risk you have to recognize because you don't get the password back if you never remember it. Your asset will remain in the wallet if there is no one hacker who stole it.
