Title: Instead of QR Code and Camera Use Bump? http://bu.mp/

Seems like most bitcoin apps are using QR Codes which can be a pain since you have to use a camera to take a pic of it.  Has anyone looked into  http://bu.mp/?  All you need is to bump two phones together and the bitcoins can be transferred.  No need for NFC chip.

I found bump a neat idea, but in my experience it doesnt work that well.

What was wrong with it?

The QR scanning implementation on phones is an inane concept considering ad-hoc wireless capabilities aren't that difficult. "Bumping" is only one example. We'll see this inevitably with mobile Bitcoin transactions.

Not sure, it wouldnt detect the bumps most of the time. We kept smashing our phones together until out knuckles hurt, but only like one in 5 time it would work. Kinda defeats the purpose.

This. Plus you feel kind of stupid while doing it (mostly because it sometimes doesn't work)

I used bump a couple of times with Paypal and it worked every time I did it. What phone are you using it on, and does your phone have a reputation for having a dodgy accelerometer?

I used an iPod Touch, but it was a couple of years ago. Maybe it is better now...

I agree.  Not had any problem using QR and a cam and they scan quite fast.

I used to think that NFC is the way to go (and I still think it will be the future), bus since I have been using the excellent Android Bitcoin Wallet (https://market.android.com/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet) using QR codes, I have came to the conclusion that QR codes are good enough.

Actually, the benefit of NFC or other technologies over QR codes are pretty minimal: QR codes are fast, easy and you can start accepting bitcoins with them by just printing your QR code out. It takes from me no more than 5 seconds to scan a QR code with my android app. I would argua that paying with QR codes and bitcoins is faster than cash.

kangasbros: That android wallet also supports NFC doesn't it? I can't test as my device doesn't have that hardware, but I remember at least one of the android wallets advertised support for it.

Yeah, it supports NFC too. It's an excellent app, I frequently check for updates.
