Profits depends on so many things that you could not I guess imagine. 1st and MOST important thing is : is your new coin going to be useful. Will people use it. Will some shops accept it as they accept Bitcoin. Can be perhaps profitable, but most of the coins won't make it nowhere near any exchange or other possibility of selling the coins. Depends on coin quality and how good dev are you, or how good dev you can hire .... and how good "marketing" and other stuff can you do for the coin. For a "copycat" coin (just change a name, etc ...), there is close to zero investment, but also xclose to zero chance to get to any market ... and for quality coin that would have decent chance of getting to a market - you'll find out that you have to spend some effort and/or money on improving and promoting a coin .... In both cases, there is quite high risk that you end up without any profit and with a loss. People are still trying though ... Coin creation is a risky business, many of the coins die and any sort of premine lowers the chance to get to any exchange considerably. And without a premine you have then to invest some hashpower to actually mine your coin .... Scary part is for me there is real risk in not mining your premined shitclone right away so I always jump right on board unless I have something better to mine.
