Title: Powering 12 gpu with 1 PSU - how to split cables for risers Post by: kakoluckiam on June 25, 2018, 06:35:38 AM Hi everyone!
So, I've bought some of those https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B07C1QWM8S/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A1YAZWMMSVJHC4&psc=1 They work just fine on my vega rigs, so I'd like to use them for 12x 570 rigs aswell. The problem is, that PSU comes with 6 PCI cables (12 6+2 connectors in total) and 4 utility cables (each cable has 2x sata and 2x molex, so 8x sata and 8x molex total available). Is there a way to split the utility cables to power the 12 risers and the ssd? I know a riser can pull up to 75W, so I was wondering if using 2x molex + 1x sata from each cable may cause fire somehow. At the end of it, the main question is how many watts can one of those utility cables provide safely without getting overloaded? PS: i'm using 006c version risers, so eventually I would get molex to 6 pin and sata to 6 pin adapters. Thanks! for all those who want to start crying because they do it other way -> yes it might run stable für weeks/months, but you will overload/damage your risers/psu lines or gpus with time send this psu back and get 2 gold/platin rated psu from some good brand to split the workload. 97€ für a 1800w psu...man really ? this can only be crap, you will damage your hardware or burn you home in worst case Title: Re: Powering 12 gpu with 1 PSU - how to split cables for risers Post by: sindikat on June 25, 2018, 09:52:55 AM I do not understand why you increase the number of GPU on your rig? It doesn't make any sense. It seems to me that 6 GPU is the optimal amount. From the fact that you increase the number of GPU to 12 PCs you will not win anything. This rig will take the volume is the same as a 2x6. In case of breakage you will have 12 GPU. The possibility of a fire is also higher. And most importantly, the price of rig 12 GPU will cost the same or even more than 2x6.

2x6 Rigs you need 2x CPU´s, 2x RAM, 2x Mainboard, 2x PSU, 2x OS and 2x Harddrives. With 1x 12 RIG you need 1x CPU, 1x RAM, 1x Mainboard, 1x PSU, 1x OS, 1x Harddrive. So i think you are not right, it is more expensive if you build 2x 6 rig. When building 2 6 GPU rigs you need 1 more CPU, 1 more SSD, 1 more Mem, 1 more MB, how is that cheaper then a 12 GPU rig ? Only in case of a crash and 1 of the 6 GPU keeps running, there is an advantage, but my 12 GPU rigs don't crash that much, most connection lost to the pool, 2 6 GPU rigs would have the same problem. In theory you could use this psu to power max 10 gpus, you have to connect 8 molex riser and 2 pcie risers, than you have 10 free pcie for your gpus. For sure you need a second psu (and 1 dual psu adapter) to power the last 2 gpus and your mainboard + ssd.So, I've bought some of those https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B07C1QWM8S/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A1YAZWMMSVJHC4&psc=1 They work just fine on my vega rigs, so I'd like to use them for 12x 570 rigs aswell. If you plan to use one only PSUs (your current PSU), use all 8 Molex cable to powering 8 risers, and the other 4 risers using Sata (one rail per riser) one of this Sata must use to powering risers and also SSD. Each card (depend on the brand, series) has different power management (we have zero control over it), I hope your card pull a bit power from PCIe bus. |
