Title: Question about Risers
Post by: jollyriffic on February 08, 2014, 10:50:21 PM
Heres the goal.
i'm building a customer computer case out of acrylic to show off my computer guts.
its built out of acrylic, got all the other things i need but need a riser.
the riser will permit me to place the graphics card beside the motherboard. <-- very important to my build.
i bought 4 pcie 16x to 16x powered cables, but the look isn't making me happy at all, i'm actually trying to sell them now.

now, i'll be gaming on this rig, when not gaming i'll be mining, and i've only got one video card currently.

my question is, will something like the  USB Style PCI-E 1x - 16x Powered Riser Cable
the one that goes from pcie 1x to usb 3.0 to pcie 3
drop any performace on my graphics card while gaming?

heres a rendering of what the desk + case will look like. desk is already finished and is 8 foot by 3 foot :)
i reduced the amount of holes for fans to 6 total. i'll need to make a fan controller for it but i'll get to it later.
graphics card(s) will line the left and right sides of the motherboard (when i can buy more than the single card i have now)

This is a BTC forum. You're posting in a subsection about alt-coins. And you're asking about building a gaming case?

Yes, those USB risers will allow you to reposition the GPUs any way you want. Some of them even come with 100cm cables, and give you a LOT of flexibility to orient them.

However, your GPUs will only run at PCIe 1x speeds, not PCIe 16x speeds. For mining, this doesn't make a difference. For gaming, it will. You will see a performance hit.
