Especially considering that if Facebook launched its own crypto coin that it would likely gain instant popularity and trust from its existing userbase.

Just because it could die doesn’t mean that Facebook has anything to fear. I believe Facebook can structure its cryptocurrency so that the interests of all involved are met and exceeded. This includes the interests of Facebook shareholders, users, employees, and ultimately all of the participants in the Facebook Coin transaction economy.

There are lots of rumors about Google's or Facebook's coins but there are no assurance of this and we dont even know whats their purpose wold be.
