Title: Bitcoin in Australia: what's happening down under?
Post by: Gavin Andresen on March 17, 2011, 02:46:07 PM
I got this question from an editor at TechWorld.com.au :
Quote
You are originally from Melbourne, and I noticed an Australian was prepared to trade a car for Bitcoins. Any other stories like that you can share? Any news on Bitcoin activity in Australia?

... and I'm looking for good answers.

Noagendamarket, and I are the only two active members of the bitcoin community from AUS that I know of.

There has been a couple 'one-hit-wonders'  (like the car sale, that didn't ended up being sold for btc afaik).

I have a couple 'super secret projects' on the go. Noagendamarket has done quite a few things.  ;D

Otherwise, not much happening down under, (at least not publicly).

I keep posting on Reddit whenever someone whinges about something financially related (Paypal, donations, etc) hoping to generate more traction - although that's not really Australia-specific.

I keep thinking about other ways to promote the idea.

Since there's not really the same level of financial unrest in Australia as there is in the rest of the world, it's probably harder to get people interested.

I'm considering making a "BitCoin - the PayPal Alternative" bumper sticker :)

That's what we need. A car, a building, a business perhaps...? Something that society deems to be a large purchase... To be sold in exchange for bitcoins.

The press potential for that one is phenomenal.

Bitcoin is by origin a web currency, and in very early days. Aside from a few fringe examples it's extremely hard to find situations of it being used regionally.

Would be great if it could be used to buy drinks at a nightclub, petrol, or for groceries at the supermarket, but I'm not sure that's the way it will go.

Im thinking of selling "aussie emergency packs" of vegemite, tim tams ,anzac biscuits and  coles vouchers (it is an aussie wide grocery store) which also sells alcoholic beveridges and you can use the receipts to get discounts on petrol...

I am one person in an economically depressed area of Australia so if I can see the potential its only a matter of time till everyone else does.

If only I owned a shop I would have a price in bitcoins on the shelves right now .

Just saw this post. I am an American living in Australia and have set up http://bitcoins.aunz.ws to allow Aussies to buy bitcoins by depositing cash at an NAB nationwide.

Hi ALL,

we are based on the goldcoast of Queensland Australia, https://worldbitcoinexchange.com you can exchange AUD for BTC, we started our exchange early August moving from melbourne to the gold coast. the exchange has achieved a couple of milestones already including out preforming the other major AUD Exchange sites (including mtgAUD,thAUD and ruxumAUD) (http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/) we put this down to the simplicity of the exchange and good customer service, something our company prides it's self on.

We have a couple of projects coming soon including BTC POS (point of Sale) operating through our exchange for brick and mortar Merchants/Retailers with our goal to replace EFTPOS !! :)
