Title: Electrum still to synchronize, 2.6.4
Post by: Patrol2.8 on June 30, 2018, 01:06:37 PM
Hi guys,

I have installed electrum 2.6.4 on Ubuntu linux 18.04, I have bought bitcoin a view for testing and it is Unconfirmed at this moment for 2 hours.

At this moment electrum is still synchronising and nothing happends. What can I do or have to do, I am very new on this platform.

Best, Patrol

Update Electrum to the latest version.

This version is so old that it doesn't synchronize anymore.

Why would you choose to install 2.6.4. I have a concern it didn't come from electrum.org, if not, you may lose/may have already lost your Bitcoin. Upgrade to the current version as TryNinja suggests, we're on 3.1.3, don't get it from anywhere but electrum.org/#download

I also suggest to do it from another device which is clean since there's chance that your current device is compromised and check the installer signature if needed.

Also, newest electrum version is 3.2.0

Who told that old version don't sync I am also using and it is perfectly workings. The latest version is having problem to install as it asking some files to download.

There are a few syncronisation bugs with the old versions that were discovered and fixed in the newer versions. Not to mention the JSON RPC vulnerability that was discovered.

Where do you see that? ???

EDIT: seems my mobile data provider is useless! :P Official website only has 3.1.3: https://electrum.org/#download

You're either looking at a scam/clone website... Or one of the forks like ElectronCash (which isn't a Bitcoin wallet... It's Bitcoin Cash)

Who told that old version don't sync I am also using and it is perfectly workings. The latest version is having problem to install as it asking some files to download.
It's quite common for the older v2.x versions to struggle with syncing... I believe it has to do with being unable to cope with data contained in newer transactions (ie. SegWit etc) and not being able to parse them correctly.

not only it's too old of version but it also has JSONRPC vulnerability
you should immediately upgrade to the latest version Electrum-3.2.0, or you may lose your coins
read the sticky Vulnerability discovered in Electrum 2.6 to 3.0.4: please upgrade (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2721388.0)

Official website only has 3.1.3: https://electrum.org/#download
It's showing "Latest release: Electrum-3.2.0" on the official site for me too

and hcp is right about the segwit/native segwit addresses that can't be understood as easily by the older versions.

Seems like my data provider (or at least my mobile data provider) is caching the Electrum website :-\

I can still only see v3.1.3... despite repeated attempts to refresh the page.

However I see the v3.2.0 release in the GitHub release notes... Looks like some significant changes! :)

have you tried using Ctrl+F5 to refresh the webpage? because sometimes it is just your browser cache that is stuck there and doesn't update. using the Ctrl will tell your browser to throw away that cache and actually refresh the webpage.

you can also always use this link too: https://download.electrum.org/

P.S. you may not want to rush to upgrade to this one yet (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4575379.msg41253490#msg41253490)

shift + click reload does a hard reload on firefox. this forces the browser to fetch a fresh copy from the server.

You can't do either on a "mobile" browser ;)  Hence my comment about the mobile data provider. I was at work and was using the Chrome browser on my android device... which, btw, is still showing 3.1.3 ::) Apparently, it's quite difficult to get Chrome on an Android device to actually "force refresh" :-\

Since I've got home... I've obviously checked with my normal Windows Desktop Chrome Browser... and it's showing 3.2.0.

I use chrome on android:
1. Click the three dots
2. Then hit the refresh button.

Alternatively:
1. Zoom out fully on the website
2. Swipe down on the actual webpage from the top to the bottom.

If these don't work:
Go to History>Clear Browser Data>on the dropdown select "beginning of time">and uncheck "browsing history" and "cookies" so only image and file cache is listed there.

You spend way to much time on electrum's website if it manages to cache itself in your browser :).

ya I know that their is some problem in spectrum 2.8.3 version but if you are using with password then their is no problem. I tried to install latest version 3.1.3in windows 7 but their is!some problem and not installing even when I updated my windows with latest update. And now the latest version I am seeing is 3.2.1in the site

Ah yes, it might be better to downgrade to before the error occurred unless you're definitely sure you know what you're doing.
If your wallet is fully encrypted, a json rpc command can still be run on the "send" tab to change the address/amount/fee fields.

Code:
javascript:location.reload(true)

downgrading is not such a good idea unless you are aware of what has changed in the version that you have. for example if you have 3.1.3 and downgrade to a version between 2.6 and 3.0.4 then you would be exposing yourself to a known bug that can endanger your coins.

That's not very user friendly though is it?

I don't get this. I've just said to downgrad before 2.6 when the vulnerability is and you've said that that's a bad idea because between 2.6-3.0.4 then there's a vulnerability?

If he downgrades there are generally hardware and android fixes that are lost along with "minor bug fixes" that aren't really much of a miss and it's probably better than having something that could potentially get a command run on it to steal the users' coins.

maybe i shouldn't have mentioned any version numbers. that was just an example that came to mind.
what i meant was that when you downgrade you are going back to all the bugs that has been fixed already and there have been quite a lot of them it is not just this vulnerability. for example if you back to pre 2.6 and receive a transaction containing SegWit your wallet will get stuck synching since it can not parse it.
or if you try paying BitPay by clicking their link you will be stuck on "Please Wait...." for eternity. and a dozen more small bugs.

Still i am using Electrum 2.8.6 version and their is no problem in received bitcoin from any wallet as the sender is using the segwit compatible wallet address but i receive the bitcoin smoothly and even i am sending the bitcoin to other wallet and it is going smoothly. So i have not faced any problem in using it. But now i have installed the latest electrum wallet in my android wallet and it got installed smoothly. So now i can use the latest wallet in my android wallet without any problem. So now i am safe from all the old bugs in old wallet.

Errr, so trying to prove a point about whether segwit addresses work or not, I may have opened an executable so old that my antivirus has damaged my computer and won't go away from warning about the old executable which apparently doesn't have a valid signature (though the new versions do apparently).

Still i am using Electrum 2.8.6 version and their is no problem in received bitcoin from any wallet as the sender is using the segwit compatible wallet address but i receive the bitcoin smoothly and even i am sending the bitcoin to other wallet and it is going smoothly. That's a good solution with using the version on your phone. It might not be so secure although it does use a 6 figure pin so you're probably fine with that. And as long as 2.8.6 still picks up segwit addresses and native segwit addresses then you're good.

Does Electrum 2.6.4 work for anybody ?  I've got ubuntu 14.04 on some of my desktops and ubuntu 16.04 on some others.  18.04 won't install on anything here, perhaps if it has been maldesigned to dislike anything other than the newest hardware.  Typing 'electrum' in ubuntu software centre found an installer for electrum (with no indication of which version), so I did that, and some time later started it from its icon.  Turns out that Ubuntu 16.04 installed Electrum 2.6.4 which is how I found this old thread.  Does that even work this year?, or will I be waiting forever with the wallet 'Synchronising' ?  If it has not moved in an hour then I'm uninstalling it.

By the way, the latest python3 electrum versions did not install on ubuntu 14.04 linux from 2014, and it took a day of circular loops of installing various dependency packages and dependencies of dependencies and following helpfully misexplained instructions to find that out.

No. This version has multiple synchronization issues (besides some critical exploits and security issues).

Why don't you use the latest version? You should always keep your wallet up-to-date.

Ninja, thanks for speedy reply.  I'll continue trying things until I find one that works and can see my coin from last September.  Next might be to download and install electrum 3.2.3 on ubuntu 16.04, since that needs python 3.4.  I'm less optimistic about getting python 3.6 and electrum 3.3.2

Use 3.2.4 which mitigates the phishing vulnerability.

Why the lack of optimism. One of the most important things about the updated software is that it can recognise segwit. Which is probably something you're struggling with at the moment. I can try digging out my 2.6.3 wallet but I think it's buried somewhere now.
