Bitcoin's value has dropped sharply after one of the largest trading exchanges said there was a flaw in the virtual currency's underlying software.

MtGox said it had halted transfers to external Bitcoin addresses on Friday after detecting "unusual activity".

It said an investigation had revealed it was possible for thieves to fool the transaction process so that double the correct amount of bitcoins would be sent.

Bitcoins fell from $700 (£427) to $540.

...And promptly returned to $670.

Well, Gox said there was a flaw and the price collapsed due to Gox's FUD, so technically it's true, but it is very alarming how just a little whiff of a problem and the whole cryptoworld gets turned upside down and it shits itself.

Well... strictly speaking, it was little more than the panic sellers of the moment who got turned upside down.  I was on at the moment, was considering a sell for other reasons. Saw the announcement, saw the drop, and didn't sell. Others made the same decision. A few trading losses don't make Bitcoin. Media FUD does not make Bitcoin either.
