Title: how to save google authenticator ?
Post by: cryptotool on July 03, 2018, 11:38:03 AM
first take a pic of the qr code in your mobile camera and save the image file in secret area, (like mail) then scan via google authenticator app.
then if you missed the google authenticator you can use this image file for scanning the qr code.
be safe, thank you.

Forget about google authentication, if you lose your device then you are in deep shit!!! I moved to Authy Desktop (https://authy.com/download/). It has recovery system - so, if you lose your device then you do not need to manually contact with all the customer services and ask them to remove your 2FA.

PS: My list is fairly long...

Authy Desktop is very good, thanks for informing about it. As it got desktop and mobile features also. As you said it got recovery system i have to check it. But it is more easy to use then Google Authenticator.  Once i have used google authenticator and their was some problem with my mobile so i have to reinstall all software and google authenticator got deleted but luckily i just have used in one app so was easy to replace it with that site help but like you if i am enrolling for lot of account will be in deep problem.

authy is not opensource and it can not be considered safe. I use andOTP (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.shadowice.flocke.andotp&hl=en_US)

Does no one write down backups on pieces of paper anymore? Might be just me, but I'm too paranoid to store 2FA backups on an online service.

I think the only way is to save information from one device and then restore it on another one.
This should restore all codes.
But overall, it is very inconvenient that we can't view the keys in the app.

You are absolutely right though. Saving a recovery method in your email is one of the least secure things I can imagine - why even have two factor turned on if hacking one of your factors (email) gives access to the second one? This is as silly as well emailing yourself your recovery seed.

This backup is very important. I last recovered the google authenticator on the website because of a mobile phone failure. The operation is very troublesome.
