Title: Is it feasable to CPU mine with 170Ghz?
Post by: WoodyWoodpecker on February 10, 2014, 11:47:44 PM
mmmm see that post count. yep I'm a noob

The short of it
I have a vmware cluster with 170Ghz of processing power across 76 cores. From what I've gathered cpu mining is rather poor in its efficiency compared to GPU but what if I have 12 xeon procs? I also have no power or cooling concerns or any other costs.

I'm really just bored.

If your not paying for the electric or anything then yes it is feasible.

Don't use your CPU to mine bitcoin lol.
You can mine some CPU-only coins and sell them for bitcoin.

MemoryCoin is a great coin to mine on that setup.
I would use the YAM mining software.  It is easy to setup and use with great support from the developer and the community.
Here is a link to the community YAM discussion. https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=2609.0
Here is the BitCoinTalk thread to get you some info on it as it is a great place to start.

I hope this helps get you on your way.  Enjoy.

I quite agree about Memorycoin, and especially with no power costs, I'm in the process of mining with much less now and I think it still makes sense.

There are a few CPU mineable coins that work out pretty good.   I've done PTS and XPM so far.

Also agree, more efficient to avoid bitcoin and focus on alternate coins which can still be mined with CPU. Check out coinmarketcap.com to see current list of most promising alternate coins as the list changes daily. This way you can re-prioritize your mining activities from week to week based on the most promising projected ROI.

Yeah CPU-only coins are the only way you'll earn anything. Not worth bothering with any others
