Title: Is GTX 1050 ti Worth it? Post by: Scrotal on July 04, 2018, 01:19:17 AM I have been seeing a lot of GTX 1050 TI's for sale around $150. I have a GTX 970 right now and am just wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a 1050 just for basic mining. I don't care about power costs or anything like that, I'm mining and HODLing for years so it doesn't have to be profitable right now. Just wondering if there is a big jump in Hashrates for any coins with the 1050 TI. From what I have been reading it doesn't seem like the 1050 TI is much better than the 970. Any suggestions??

Post by: leowonderful on July 04, 2018, 04:23:17 AM Depends what price the 1050s are going for really, but in most cases you should be going for a 1050Ti versus a 1050 if the card is priced at $150. In mining there isn't a real jump from the 970 to 1050Ti, and the 1050Ti actually does worse than the 970 in most algos, but you save on electrical costs as the 1050ti uses much less power (which you don't care about).
In the end I would personally stick with the 970. It's a better card than the 1050ti as it hashes quicker on most algorithms, and power isn't an issue for you. I got 48 x Zotac 1050Ti OC in mid october 2017, at a price of around 135$ a piece, with a 3 year warranty. It hashes around 14.9 mh/s per card on ETH only, and that isn't bad for the price. I got lucky, so i got my ROI. It is still very profitable for me, with a power price of around 0.05$ per KW. But now at this prices and difficulty i don't know what to tell you, at this prices of crypto it would take a longer time for you to get your ROI...

Just to check out the technical side of mining, I also started also with a GTX 1050 Ti (type ASUS Strix OC) last year. Now I use the card for gaming in my second PC. ;D There are no real weaknesses for that price. 4 GB of RAM, enough shaders, low power consumption, very quiet if there is a good cooler mounted. Furthermore, there isn't a 3,5 GB "bug" like the 970 has. If you are just interested in profits and ROI things, it is a bad time to start now - but I don't think so, because you write you want to do "long-term HODL". From that point of view - why not? Now there are many asics on the basic algorithms (Etnash, Equihash). 1050 ti take up a lot of space and have a very small hashed. A year ago it was interesting, now I would not buy these video cards. $ 150 is very expensive, maybe it would be interesting to look for these video cards for $ 100 on the secondary market. Mining is a very dynamic and developing business. It's hard to make money on old and low-performance video cards.
