Title: Amsterdam - Bitcoin at one free hackmeeting + another conference
Post by: genjix on March 18, 2011, 05:54:11 PM
Anyone can come to pixxxel on the 4th,

http://pixxxel.net/2011/03/bitcoin-digital-currency/

I'll be talking about Bitcoin there. There will be 4 people involved in Bitcoin at that conference.

Also if you're a business man that can pay the €2k entry fee then also on the 6th,

http://www.epcaconference.com/

--------------------------------
     http://PiXXXeL.net - made in Am★dam (and beyond…)

At PiXXXeL we focus on free and open source software practices, 360
degrees! and with direct participations of developers and pioneers
living around or, as in this case, passing by the city of Amsterdam.

More precisely you'll find us in Keizersgracht 264 at http://nimk.nl

This mail announces our 3rd appointment of a regular series we are
organizing during 2011 and this time we'll focus on... MONEY :)
an old media that needs a bit of an update - so free software
developers are busy on it and there is some interesting running code
to look at.

Bitcoin is a digital currency created in 2009, whose use online has
grown during 2010 and is booming just as we are talking.

     http://pixxxel.net/bitcoin-digital-currency

We'll have a presentation of this technology by an experienced nomadic
developer and bitcoin expert: Genjix - who is also a developer of free
software solutions based on Blender and Crystal Space.

Then we'll proceed with a Q&A session and a critical overview of the
limits and, arguably, things that can be made better in Bitcoin, as
well things that go wrong.

You are all invited to be with us and brainstorm openly, but please
register your presence with a mail to ilse@nimk.nl so that we can be
sure we'll accommodate everyone at NIMk.

Here some links to know more what we are talking about:

Genjix you were quite brave to talk in front on those quite "corporate" people.  You seemed extremely intimidated but you kept on and you did a good job.

I don't know if those people were capable of seeing through you lack of experience in public talks, but I think at some point some of them were starting to.

Well done.  Brave and bold.

But you will need more practice if you want to become more convincing.  Keep on anyway!

PS.  I so much would like to make a conference too.  In english or french, doesn't matter.   I'll try to see if I can organize something in Paris.

PS#2.  I'm not sure those guys "deserve" to be taught about bitcoin.  Why did you do them this favor ?

I was sent this report on genjix's talk, not sure if it's linked elsewhere:

This article is a nice tribute to bitcoin.

People are starting to realize how huge is this discovery.  Not those people attending this conf though.  I'm pretty sure they thought it was a prank.  There were even some women attending this conference.  That tells you a lot about this public.

Everybody afterwards told me I was amazing, and we had multiple people asking to eat with us at lunch that we couldn't meet all. You can't see in the talk but people were laughing at all the cool shit like drugs .etc and when taking my seat people were patting my back/giving me a thumbs up.

Inexperience- no way. I've spoken at bigger/more famous conferences before. You should maybe google my nickname/real name.

Intimidated - no way. Showing a picture of black bloc anarchists, drugs, crushing the system, wikileaks and a gun. Wearing nail polish. I felt perfectly fine.

And the slides was their fault since they didn't tell me I would not have my laptop on stage and that I have to use their Mac.

Ok I guess I had a wrong impression then.  My bad.

Somehow it seems that you're working for the "ennemy" though.  Think about it.

Not really, in that audience there are going to be 1-2 people (at least) who get it, and will jump on this thing and pump resources into it.

The ones that don't get it will be burned up when the meteor hits like the dinosaurs they are.

Well done genjix ... fear not, enough will "get it".

Corollary: some big tests to the architecture will not be far behind.

Remarkable is i have found it obvious the difference in reactions when explaining bitcoin to various people ... the people who get it (5-10%), must be those who recognise the totalitarian nature of our current electronic fund transfer system, you can see their face brighten, eyes light up and the grey cells start humming.

At this conference the majority approved. Mainly because it wasn't entirely banker types.

Afterwards the organiser told us that we had the best talk of the entire conference. He said there _were_ a few banker types sitting there all white-faced & scared looking around nervously. The video has been cut to look professional but halfway through people spontaneously applauded and people were laughing at various points to things. There was this hum of mumble every so often and people looking at each other.

I think you're all underestimating how excited these people were. Maybe they don't yet see it as battle tested & too risky but they certainly all loved the idea, the concept.

Good talk! You covered some of the more inspiring aspects of Bitcoin. I especially liked that you mentioned the genesis block headline.

You said that mining is unprofitable, but it is quite profitable for GPU miners.

Again:  honnestly Genjix I really think those guys don't deserve your efforts.

I just watched the video of the talk.  Excellent job, Genjix. I really enjoyed the highlighting of the money laundering service from Mike Gogulski. You are now added to the great BIG gubmint database of public bitcoin advocates when they come for us.  "Sir, but it's just a math puzzle".....Cheers.

They won't come for any of us. I know where all of those bankers live.

It turns out that bankers sure like masks and fuzzy handcuffs. :P

I was wondering what you were talking about, and then I realised you own the bitcoin sextoy store (right?)

Sort of. I don't "own" it, but I do operate it.

In case you hadn't guessed, I was joking of course. :D
