Title: Antminer S1 + Arctic F12 and others - PWM not working?
Post by: AndersAA on February 13, 2014, 05:26:32 PM
I've bought a couple of extra fans for my S1 but it doesn't seem to really make much of a difference.

I have:
2 x Arctic F12 PWM 120mm case fan (600-1350rpm)
2 x Artic F12 Pro PWM 120mm case fan (500 - 1500rpm)
2 x CoolerMaster SickleFlow 120 (2000 rpm)

The problem is: None of the above seem to change rpm when connected to the 4pin PWM socket on the second blade. They work - but their RPM's don't show up like they do for the stock fan and don't seem to change speed...

Are they compatible? Shouldn't they be?

Also - I've mounted one SickleFlow 2000 rpm "backwards" on the other end to make a push/pull system. Should/will it work better if I just mount it so both fans "blow" of the radiators at either end?

Any other suggestions?

Gentle Typhoon is the way to go:

Just screw that into the other end the same way the stock fan is, and you should have great push/pull effect.

Doesn't matter if the fan doesn't show up in the interface, just connect to the power supply instead.

As long as your 2 blades are around 40 - 42 degrees, should be great for the overclock to @205 GH/s.

Right now they're 44-46 @ 387 beside a window that's ajar - sub-optimal to say the least. Kinda small office without circulation besides the window(<10c outside) and my girlfriend can't sleep through the noise of the stock fan at 2700 :/

I'm worried the fans aren't turned up because PWM doesn't work because it isn't registering rpm.
So I should just connect them all to the psu and they'd stay at max?

Still wondering why a 4pin PWM plug won't register rpm from a 4pin PWM fan though?

I would put the arctic fans at max yes considering the low rpm

Well actually I don't know if they're running at low rpm - probably not. The problem is I expected the damn blade to pic up the fan rpm. Why wouldn't it?? I see lots of people using these exact fans with the S1's.
I wish I had a shed I could put my miners in :/

Look like the Antminer cannot control 2 speed of fan at one time. It only get the speed for primary fan.

It can control both fans. All of mine do. The only problem is that the second fan does not display rpm in the web interface.

I use this fan at the other end of all my miners.

It starts and stops on its own. Plugged into the 4 pin connector.

Wouldnt a fan with greater static pressure do better as a pull fan if you are trying to do that type of configuration?
Something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181039 which is built for being on top of a radiator.

I don't know crap about fan mechanics but that actually makes sense - initially I thought buying a double pack of those but chose the others because of the airflow. I think I'll give them a try though - do they push or pull? A CPU-fan pulls right... Or am I completely off?

It will make very little difference unless the ambient temperature is very high.
Any fan added to the open end will just pull free air in rather than the air that is within the grills between the ant's.
If you enclose the ant in a tunnel then all that would need to be done would be to turn the existing fan around to pull the air through as pulling air from a box is more efficient than trying to push air into it.

Ambient temp will probably go as high as 28c at times - though 23c atm.

Has anyone ever tried to build an enclosure for these?

There has been a couple on the threads but I cannot find them at the moment, the price never seemed to warrant the purchase. It seems far simpler just to place the ant on a wire rack and aim a couple of cheap case fans at the exposed sides of the chips, or mount one of the blades the other way round, put it grill side up and place a couple of case fans on the grills.

EDIT: The grill side up mount from Dogie https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=355387.msg5157194#msg5157194

Yeah. I've considered turning the Ant inside out but I'll probably just use a friend's basement with better cooling, cheaper solar electricity and a more stable fiberconnection instead of my xdsl.
