Bitcoin is the last of their concerns.  The problems in Nigeria and Africa are deeply rooted in their government and exploitation.  Using cryptocurrency will not solve their problems.

Bitcoin has a more rapid development potential in Africa, and people here are in great need of block chain technology, both in banks, medical care, and employment.

I think that the people in countries that experience or have experienced hyperinflation are most likely the people that see the real value of bitcoin and will become early mass adopters.

I don't think most African countries are into crypto and so you shouldn't be surprised to realize only a handful of people from Nigeria are into crypto. I think maybe with time, a lot of them will jump onto the opportunity. Probably, you can be the ambassador over there.

African countries are very active in the crypt world! of course, African countries are very afraid of uncontrolled money and they by all possible means stop the development of the crypto market! Now the International Monetary Bank has started using a crypto system to support three African countries! and this gives us an understanding that the crypto market will come there faster than we think! The very government of Nigeria, as if it would not resist with bitcoin and with the whole crypto system, sooner or later there will be a very active development of the crypto market! in Nigeria, very high inflation, so they need alternative money to save their accumulated capital! In the African countries, terminals for the reception and exchange of crypto coins have become very popular, more and more they are placed all over Africa!

Blockchain technology with bitcoins as  the main focus is not yet understandable among developing countries like nigeria or africa countries. In the future if knowledge is gained from other developed countries and transferred to Nigeria, It will then be adopted by majority. But for now, only few educated elites are into bitcoins in nigeria.

Adoption of Bitcoin in Nigeria is growing gradually especially in higher institutions where Students carryout research on cryptocurrency and share their result with colleagues and their are online sites in Nigeria that offers direct exchange of Bitcoin for fiat(Naira).
I think that with increase awareness the future of Bitcoin is bright inspite of government negative attitude.

African countries (including nigeria) are already aware of the importance of cryptocurrency in their businesses and encourage cross-border trade and payments. In fact there are more than 1000 merchants who receive Bitcoin in South Africa.
Don't make a generalization on a subject matter you are not conversant with. That comment  is wrong. South Africa and Kenya are the leading countries in Africa when it comes to cryptocurrency. Both countries even have bitcoin ATMs while there is none in Nigeria despite her very large population.

Nigeria has a lot of oil but a lot of the funds go to the wrong sort of people. With bitcoins it would be more transparent so there will be less scams with dodgy oil deals
Honestly, I don't see how this will help.

Bitcoin future is great in Nigeria as well.
Yah, may be from the tiny enclaves and telegram groups doing the buying and selling. Of course there are also the merchants on localbitcoin sites.

Adoption of Bitcoin in Nigeria is growing gradually especially in higher institutions where Students carryout research on cryptocurrency and share their result with colleagues..
Please, could you mention that institution in Nigeria where this is going on? Are you posting here to increase your post counts and ignorantly misleading readers here for the sake of that? Desist from such unscrupulous act.

Do you have a link to the research site to help authenticate your 11% claim? I believe the percentage is even far less than that.

In Nigeria, Bitcoin adoption was in response to the 2016 financial crisis, which limited international trading due to the insufficiency of foreign currencies. The common factor for Bitcoins in both Nigeria and the USA is the isolation from financial crisis and that it serves as a great medium for exchange during these times.

In Nigeria their economic condition is not good. People are living below standard. I think they have not enough money to invest on bitcoin. Because bitcoins price is too expensive that’s why bitcoin can’t do anything for them.

Nigerian Entrepreneurs are Choosing Bitcoin Over the National Currency

A growing number of businessmen in Nigeria are opting for handling their business using the digital currency instead of the Naira. The country’s national currency seems to be more volatile than Bitcoin, at times.

As cryptocurrencies fight for relevance around the world, Nigerian citizens are starting to use Bitcoin as an alternative to their own currency, the Nigerian Naira. If you take a quick look at the Naira on TradingView, you’ll quickly see how the currency has been losing its value consistently over the past 5 years.

Yes it is sad that bitcoin is not flourishing in that way in Nigeria but at least this is a matter of hope that it is banned there like it is in many countries. Nigeria is lagging behind maybe because the government is not a crypto friendly one. But still hope soon they will also be able to keep in pace with the current crypto world.  ::)

I don't think so. Nigeria uses bitcoin as the mode of payment and they created their own regulations.  The Central Bank of Nigeria which should lead the regulatory environment is still understudying the virtual currency. It held a ‘Virtual Currencies as an Emerging Medium of Exchange’ conference earlier this year with various stakeholders in attendance.  For the company, regulation will only enhance better customer relations as it will protect consumers and keep fraudulent operators out of system.

Nigeria as a country is governed by some set of selfish leaders, exploiting her citizens, I once read a write up wherein the Central bank of Nigeria CBN issued a warning to the public that people buying Cryptocurrencies are gamblers. These people will secretly be buying and trading bitcoin through third party, but will never take out time to educating its people the positive side of bitcoin. Am glad for the social media, it is there for the people of Nigeria to getting information and discern the true enemy of financial freedom.

Nigeria as the giant of Africa as always acclaimed should stand up to her responsibility and become the first African country to legalized bitcoin and the use of the blockchain technology as their alternative financial institutions and adopt bitcoin as her national secondary currency. But before that they need to deal with the issue of corruption which bitcoin can become a major tool in doing that.

Payment at what shops or for what services? Can you name any? Please, I am a Nigerian and would like to know of any shop in Nigeria that accepts bitcoin for payment. Of course, there are none.

Also, I would like to know a place where I can buy or sell my Bitcoin from any of you here saying bitcoin exists in Nigeria (not on the localbitcoin site). I mean a group on telegram or WhatsApp. I will be waiting. .

Nigeria will grow in Bitcoin adoption soon, just that the level of education, ict and financial aspect needed is not there, and mostly the scam level in which people use to scam people with little info of making them rich with some money to be contribute has gone out of hands , most especially when mmm raked most people back then in 2016,2017 which had contribute to the level of turn out to support or adopt crypto because many think they are all scam.

I even heard about someone who collected money from people in local areas to invest in Bitcoin last year 2017, and he ran away with huge some of money even when Bitcoin did wonder by moving from 4000+ to 19000+ , which suppose be an avenue to create awareness and more adoption with what he has gained but decide to scam them,
So would those set of people ever believe Bitcoin or cryptocurrency is legit and don't forget that bad news spread faster than good once, these are some of reasons I think Nigerian are still lacking behind .

There is a right time for them to enter in crypto world and patronize bitcoin to help them increase their way of living. Nigeria is a developing country and has also a big community. I believe someday they will engage in cryptocurrency and it will help them to increase the level of their living in terms of financial aspect.

I do not think Nigeria is lagging behind. I have seen many project startup being launched in Nigeria. Kurecoin, sleekpay etc and the presence of Nigerian on the internet using cryptocurrency is greatly increasing but I am sure you understand Nigeria is a kind of country where many people do the same business. people are scared of exploring new opportunity because they do not want to lose money even though very high unemployment rate have make some people to start exploiting cryptocurrency. Nigerian government through the central bank also have warned so many time that Nigerian should stay away for any cryptocurrency related activities. these scare people away from bitcoin because many Nigeria still think bitcoin is a scheme just like MMM that wreck some people life a year ago.

It has reached the continent of Africa but most of the country due their political problems and problems in their economy cannot fully benefit from the market of crypto currency. Although if used properly the crypto currency can actually solve a lot of problems.

I do not know where CCN get that information from. before people will choose bitcoin over local currency, bitcoin must have been dominant in making payment in such country. what we do here in Nigeria is to convert the bitcoin back to fiat using some local exchangers. no offline online store will accept bitcoin as a mode of payment here in Nigeria. reason why there has been growing interest in crypto is as a result of very high unemployment rate which forces so many Nigerian into alternative way of earning a living and ever since the incident of MMM scam, so many nigerian have since see crypto as an alternative way of earning a living

Also Nigeria government not helping matter because most of the them in power sees bitcoin as scam and also warn the public not to participate.

Like i read last year online, last year bull market pulled many of them into cryptocurrency. So i think with time when they see improvements and high rise of d crypto market, they will start using it.

African countries (including nigeria) are already aware of the importance of cryptocurrency in their businesses and encourage cross-border trade and payments. In fact there are more than 1000 merchants who receive Bitcoin in South Africa.

Moreover, the infrastructure for digital token takeoff was solid. Telecommunications liberalization across the continent has enabled internet access very well.

Figures from the GSMA show that half of the population in Africa subscribes to mobile phones. In addition, statistics state that over the past two years smartphone use in the continent has doubled to 226 million.

Knowing is different from using and exploring  and until that happens, there is really no benefit to get from that on a large scale only individuals who have the zeal to go beyond the status quo would push themselves to know how to make the economic aspect of their lives better. Currently, I don't see Nigeria focused on that area as the only thing that could force some actions would be if something drastic happen that challenge the source of revenue to finance activities and the source is narrowed down to the use of bitcoin, nothing is happening. I have read about several statements, groups, meet-ups and conferences happenings but all of these are just fore the creation of awareness as nothing solid has been announced in that part of the world.

For countries like South-Africa, I believe they are the leader of technology in Africa and closest to the West which makes it a little bit easier for them to adapt to changes and be on also be on the forefront. They wont have any problem in adopting and researching.

I think Bitcoin and crypto will grow well in the African market, especially in Nigeria. more than 1000 traders there receive bitcoin transactions.

geographically, Africa will be a market for bitcoin and crypto, because Africa needs an alternative when their national currency weak. and cryptocurrency is the solution for them.

so, I think that bitcoin in nigeria will also has good development like other south African countries in Ghana, kenya, and zimbabwe.

They will come back to bitcoin and crypto. By the way I always wonder why the poor countries dont like to get rich through cryptoland. Something always out of my head.

Your words are very bad, because no country is poor. perhaps the nigeria's consideration of bitcoin has not yet reached a bright spot, meaning Nigeria has not been able to give a solution of the existing deficiencies dibitcoin so it can make people unsafe to use Bitcoin and other crypto.
I'm sure that when someday nigeria has got a solution to control Bitcoin, then a  people of nigeria can smile in using Bitcoin.

Do not worry! now a lot of countries, politicians, people put a stick in the wheels of the development of the crypto market! I think that in the next 5 years there will be legalization of bitcoins in the whole world! with each passing day more and more people begin to use and study bitcoin and the entire crypto market system! In my opinion all African countries need faster development of the crypto market in their region! This allows you to save and increase your money, from very fast inflation!

gabbie, you could put out the link to that thread on Seun's nairaland site? I like to know about it because I know he placed an outright ban on speculative businesses such as Forex Trading and cryptocurrency.
Mpamaegbu, this is the thread link http://www.nairaland.com/3190496/currency-e-currency-market-deals  where I do trade my btc to fiat whenever I needed some cash I had the opportunity of trading with these guys, Sirambassador, Ibraheem001 others are ladyf and modath they are very trusted and reputable on that thread however I always recommends using an escrow because of a lot of scammers are there too, a lot of btc is traded on daily basis and one of the largest buyers are found in that forum in Nigeria.

The popularity of crypto currency is rapidly increasing. It has reached the continent of Africa but most of the country due their political problems and problems in their economy cannot fully benefit from the market of crypto currency. Although if used properly the crypto currency can actually solve a lot of problems.

I think maybe with time, many of them will jump to the odds. Maybe you can be an ambassador there.
I do not think most African countries are crypto so you should not be surprised to realize only a handful of people from Nigeria are crypto.

Too bad

From statistics, just 11% of the nation knows about bitcoin or cryptocurrency at large

With all due respect to you sir, I think your assertion about bitcoin awareness and usage in Nigeria is not very correct. A lot of Nigerians are actually very excited about the various opportunities that comes with bitcoin usage, I even have friends that encourage customers to pay them in Bitcoin, I have even lost count of the numbers of people that have been bugging me to teach them about bitcoin. So sir, believe me when I say Nigeria is one of the fastest growing countries in Africa (if not the World) in Bitcoin acceptance and usage.

The Prince would be proud :D

Jokes aside, I'm very happy that you guys are interested in the technology. The only thing that I'd be worry is the crime rate. If the financial crisis develops i'm pretty sure the society will divide into smart people who managed to secure their money in electronic currencies, gold, foreign currencies, and the rest that will think only about the ways of stealing that for themselves, to make a living. If the country falls into chaos, how do you think the police (who doesn't even know much about cryptos) will pursue those who manage to steal it at gunpoint?

By the way this is a very interesting topic. I never knew, but I read the news here. Renders Nigerian bitcoin-markets set new records on the volume of operations - for a week the volume was 1 950 000 000 Nigerian Naira. According to cryptocompare, the trading pair "naira-bitcoin" became the 23rd in the world in terms of the volume of transactions among national currencies. In the last 24 hours, 101.45 bitcoins were sold. The trading pair "naira-bitcoin" is about 0.03% of the world trade in the first crypto currency. In terms of growth, the Nigerian bitcoin market is overtaken only by China, which grew by 1500% in 2017.
For the poor people of the third world, this is a good chance to get out of poverty. I think they will grab this chance with all hands and together create crypto-future in their country.

It's not really true that the government of Nigeria is fighting the use of bitcoin. This is fallacious and an obvious public misleading. The use of bitcoin Nigeria exploded in 2016 because of 2  factors; the financial crisis (recession) which led to the scarcity of the dollar for foreign exchange and the the price of ponzi schemes(started with MMM). Considering the the events which led to the mass adoption of btc in Nigeria are 2 periods in the history of the country that Nigerians will like the forgot its not hard to see why a lot of Nigerians still have their doubts about btc. This not withstanding I think the number of Nigerians involve in cryptocurrency has skyrocketed the past years though the %  of people using btc is still very small. Yes, true. too many of their oil funds go in the hands of the wrong people. maybe in the presence of cryptocurrency will help the african economy. positive value for cryptocurrency.

African countries are currently hit by bitcoin, including in Nigeria, I think at this time we have to support any decision on the community itself, even though only a few understand about bitcoin, hopefully in the future we will all that year

Bitcoin will still grow in Nigeria,  just that people are not educated about the Bitcoin

How can we get them educated?

Education is really important! education is key, for kids who go to school maybe integrate it  somehow into there studies, have night time studies for adults, just find a way to get people involved and maybe more people will be interested in crypto and blockchain.

Bitcoin has a more rapid development potential in Africa, and people here are in great need of block chain technology, both in banks, medical care, and employment.

Those people need to prioritize bitcoin in able to lessen the poverty because we all know, Nigeria is part of Africa and Africa is one of the poor place in the world. With bitcoin they can help unemployed citizen, the government just need to provide those people a tool for it. Or maybe the government itself can involved itself in bitcoin so that they can help in boosting there economy.

It is easy to say but actually hard to do. how can they prioritize bitcoin if they dont have a device to access it? You know mate nigeria and other related cities in the africa are known to be poor , they dont even have an internet coverage or electricity on their country .

so overall i think the future of bitcoin in negeria will not be bright as on what we see on other developing countries .

Not only on nigeria but also to any other poorer countries   that bitcoin may seem impossible to be recognized .

African countries are lagging behind in technology as a whole and not the blockchain technology in particular. Most of the holders of crypto only use them for trading on exchanges and no real usage of their coins

You know, Nigeria has issued warnings against some of its former digital currency, including Bitcoin. I think that in Nigeria bitcoin as well as other digital coins such as: Bitcoin, Ripples, Monero, Litecoin, dogecoin, Onecoin, is not legal, so any bank or organization makes such virtual transactions may be at risk.

In my opinion, Nigerians are very interested in bitcoins and other coding currencies. Many people now understand that bitcoin is not a Ponzi scheme like MMM, and a large number of Nigerians subscribe to the platform of the digital money market every day. Hence, i think in the near future, bitcoin will probably flourish in Nigeria and be accepted by the government for legitimacy

Though government policies are not against bitcoin, but it acceptability is very low, and the reasons been that there is no bitcoin publicity. The awareness about bitcoin and how it works are shallow hence potential investors are prone to scam. And if this is not remedy on time it may affect the future of bitcoin in a negetive way.

many Nigeria are involved in Bitcoin especially the elites. Nigerian government refuse to legally adopt Bitcoin because they are not sure what the future holds for Bitcoin. many of our politicians that are suppose to make legal  are investing on it individually. let wait and see what will happen in future when the economy of Nigeria is stable.
