Title: Can we stop polls being made in certain parts of the forum?
Post by: jackg on July 10, 2018, 10:08:33 PM
I don't want to pull up examples of this but every week or so I spot a newbie who is trying to get an answer to their question in the Bitcoin Technical Support section and they add a useless poll in the hope of adding something extra to their thread so people will spot it.

Say the topics subject is "Have I lost my bitcoin?"

The poll would then read:
Question: "Have I lost my bitcoin?"(same as the subject)
The answers are then either:
• Yes they're gone
• No they're not
or
• Have I
• Lost my Bitcoin.

I'm not sure if this is something the mods tackle also as those threads aren generally ones where the op only returns as a guest and doesn't post again as the issue usually gets solved within the first firw posts.

I get putting poles in the market place or in some of the bitcoin discussion boards as they're good for research, I just don't see a point of it in the techincal support board.

I don't see why. If anyone has a valid reason to make a poll, they will. Otherwise, those dumb polls are not doing any harm.

I don't think its a huge problem right now. Putting restrictions on things isn't always the best thing to do, and just harms the legitimate users using polls for legitimate reasons. I don't I've ever come across a post that annoyed me because they had a silly poll. They are easily ignored, and its not like it bumps the topic or anything.

In fact, you might argue that including a poll might result in less bumping of the topic, because users will vote instead of replying.

If you fell that it's only for spamming a new topic (to get some merit in the end, I don't know why, but some newbies thinks that if they open a topic (or poll) quite frequently they will get merit sooner or later...)
So if you think that those users are only opening these kind of topics (polls) in order to gain activity, you can report it with "low quality", or "meaningless post" and mods will delete it. I know it's not the same to cure the problem instead of the prevention, but that's all you can do now.

It's not a problem, it's just an annoyance.  I've seen idiots put polls that make no sense in sections like Currency Exchange and Services, IIRC.  I'm really not sure why they do this, and it only reflects poorly on their mental state.  Having said that, I don't see why it should be banned.  That would be more of an inconvenience to people for whom a poll thread would be useful.  If you think a thread absolutely doesn't need a poll, you can always just ignore it.  That's what I've done.  I try not to expend more mental energy than necessary when processing shitposts.

But what sections would you prohibit them from and how could we implement that as to not effect their legitimate use? As others have said, this is just more of an annoyance than something that should be banned or restricted from certain sections, but I agree it can be annoying sometimes. I think it's mostly just kids who find a new toy to play with and they just add them in for the sake of it. I've seen polls where there's only two options and both are the same before. I guess you could report them if they're beyond stupid or are useless and they could be edited out by a staff member, but a better thing would probably just to ignore them. I think if you start to get really annoyed by these sorts of little things then this forum is just going to drive you insane  :D.

Why, why the hell we have to shut down polls in some sections because of one man creating thread with annoying polls? What about to report that thread and finish everything with this? I have no other idea, poll must be in every section, at least every forum software has included poll in everywhere and no one had born idea to shut it.

This, just hang on some things here, focus on your tasks and help others too if possible.

I guess part of the problem is that you cannot delete a poll if you want. I made a mistake some time ago and added a poll to a wrong thread. Couldn't delete it at all.

I believe this thread would have been more effective with a poll!   :o  ;)

I was going to say he should have put a poll on with only two options:

Should we remove polls?

*Yes
*Yes

Removing polls from everywhere is just stupid.
There are some places where it is good.

It's not one person, it's quite a few.
And the mods have enough work without trying to go through polls of threads (usually with legitimate issues) and start deleting the polls from them.

But what sections would you prohibit them from and how could we implement that as to not effect their legitimate use?
Boards that don't need a poll:
• Bitcoin Technical Support
• Anywhere in the marketplace that isn't service discussion
• Announcements (altcoins)
• Anywhere in the marketplace other than Service Discussion (altcoins)

Can a user delete a poll if he posted it by mistake? Couldn't find any option to remove it.
Already asked here but got no answer :

Maybe rank-restricting the polls in topics are a better alternative? This might be a better solution as it will only just restrict lower ranked members from posting these nonsense in a poll. Members and up might have a firm grasped on how polls will work in the forum by now so I think they don't need to be restricted by such. Other solutions might be rank-restricting the poll option on some sections if you want to remove the poll option for newbies to make.

Another users who's almost certainly just been told by someone they can earn here and they literally have no fucking clue what to do. He'll be on a signature soon and be getting paid for this crap.

I'm guessing a lot of his posts have been deleted already since he registered almost 4 months ago and is now on 2 posts/activity, you'd think they'd learn a bit faster. I'm not sure if it is that user but a newbie last month posted the same sort of thing "I'm new around here, can someone elighten me" and it gives you nothing to respond with as it's so unspecific.

No doubt he'll move to spamming the altcoin section for airdrops in no time...

That account is probably part of the "family's" that tend to come here, and spew out the same sort of shit. Probably just spinning their own posts every month trying to get activity. I didn't see the previous post so can't make a judgment, however I've definitely seen several accounts spinning content that they posted months ago.

I think they accidentally created poll, question should have been - "I am newbie, help me to go away".

We have to help these people to find their answers, don't just bash them:

See? It is very easy. You just have to tick one.
I really love these polls, especially when they have the same options and "multi-ticking", I usually tick all the same answers.

Somebody misusing the functionality (poll here) does not mean to remove the functionality altogether.
We just need to learn how to ignore things and be happy. No need to stress out for this.

I don't want to pull up examples of this but every week or so I spot a newbie who is trying to get an answer to their question in the Bitcoin Technical Support section and they add a useless poll in the hope of adding something extra to their thread so people will spot it.
Oh! Those newbies again ::). I really wonder why they can't understand that they should not open a thread or post in a board that they're not familiar with. Are they a total dumbass or just hard headed? Probably both.
Say the topics subject is "Have I lost my bitcoin?"

The poll would then read:
Question: "Have I lost my bitcoin?"(same as the subject)
The answers are then either:
• Yes they're gone
• No they're not
or
• Have I
• Lost my Bitcoin.

What a nonsense poll, so disappointing. That should be reported to the mods (I'm sure you did already).

Honestly, I'm not a harsh person when it comes in dealing with newbies. Every time I see lapses on their post, I just criticize them in a nice manner, gently tell them what's wrong and give them some tips also. I do this because for me being a newbie is an understandable case and besides, there's always a room for improvemnet. But since the newbie infestation (pertaining to the guilty ones only) becomes worse which is really getting into my nerve, I guess should stop being nice now.
I think if you start to get really annoyed by these sorts of little things then this forum is just going to drive you insane  :D.
Indeed, I am a living proof since I really can't help to feel annoyed. From now on, if I see posts like on OP's example (especially in our local board), I will not hesitate now to click the "Report to moderator" button. No more talks at all.

No, they shoulnd't open threads if they don't know how to live without making something off topic and irrelevant to their threads :)... Guessing what you put at least starts off a sarcasm.

Nah, they won't do anything about it normally af far as I can tell although maybe I should now it gives you a breakdown and see if it does get accepted.

Nah a lot of newbies actually know what they're doing here (the ones who aren't here to get one question answered and not come back or the ones that are here just to earn).
I lingered here for two months before making an account in 2015, I think three are a lot of newbies that skip the lingering step. It still took me a while to pick up "The Way of the Forum" and I'm still not sure I have it all down.

Indeed, I am a living proof since I really can't help to feel annoyed. From now on, if I see posts like on OP's example (especially in our local board), I will not hesitate now to click the "Report to moderator" button. No more talks at all.

South Korea sometimes have interesting coins too (the russion ones look usually like copyright infringements, viruses or just a coin marketed that doesn't actually exist)...

I don't see how it's possible to stop poll and reserve it for only certain parts of the forum.
Opinions count in every area and it can equally be misused.
